I've been playing one of these for the last three years, and I LOVE IT. It's the best amp I've ever played, the only drawback is the power, 12 watts. I just got a vibrolux reverb
(1973) I stil need to get used to it, I've got a Clark attenuator I'm going to try on it to be able to crank it a little more. ANYONE THINKING ABOUT GETTING ONE. STOP THINKING AND GO GET IT.
@roknfnrol I got the Cherry Sunburst DGT at Dave's Guitar Shop in WI. It was one of the first 20 production models. Sold it because I really wanted a Goldtop...sort of like Grissom's old McCarty Trem.
Well, I have a 5E3 clone & my PRS doesn't sound like that through it!!! Of course, I have the cheap Jensen speaker. A friend played his Taylor T5 through it & it was very sweet.
Late 1960's I played thru my tweed deluxe as a pre-amp going into 4 - 100 watt tube Ampegs with 4 - 12" lansings in each cabinet. 400 watts of superb tone with 16 - 12 " speakers to ensure earbleeds (including mine.)
In the mid 1960's, I ran thru 2 Baldwin Exterminators (2-12's, 2'10's and 2-8's as I recall) and they were great amps for transistor amps although good luck finding a repair man in podunck New Mexico. I heard Neil Young uses an "Exterminator behind the scenes." I know why.
I've got fender deluxe 5e3 clone also but it has some alterations for 6L6 tubes.I'm a great Neil young fan and Neil uses Fender deluxe 5e3 with 6l6 power tubes and 2 12ax7 preamp tubes .
Yeah, he said that once he plugged in one of these, it sounded five times better than his vintage bandmaster "I don't know what this guy does, but he's a genious"
i just have one question on the celestion blue, can it handle hi gain for solos like really heavy distortion but at the same time do beautiful clean sound and a nice fuzz sound?
The blue is only rated at 15 watts so unless you have a low wattage amp, it's not compatible at all. That being said, I think it's the best speaker out there for vintage voiced amps under 20 watts.
I wouldn't really pound a blue with a fuzz pedal or lots of boost.
Thanks! A cranked up 5E3 is the key to the 'Neil tone', imo. The amp definitely isn't neighbor friendly, if you live in an apartment. 15-18 watts is still pretty loud, especially with an efficient speaker like the Celestion AlNiCo Blue.
Thanks for the reply. I'm also looking at the Swart STR Tweed as a neil type amp. Have you tried one? Does your Clark have more compressed/unhinged tome than this clip with the volume up further?
Yes, the Beaufort becomes more compressed/unhinged at higher volumes. This was recorded at '7' out of '12' on the volume...essentially halfway up. It doesn't get any louder...just more compressed/distorted. I've heard great things about the Swarts...but they're pretty expesive for a 5E3 type circuit. You can pick up a Beaufort 'Special' from Mike Clark for $799 (I believe?).

Thanks! This guitar/amp combo is a ton of fun.

Neil uses Vintage Jensen speaker C12N.

That amp sounds killer with the CB in it...gives it even more depth.
Nice demo too, most of the guys demoing amps like this are *so* stuck playing blues and funk.
The NY stuff was a nice change.
It was nice to hear that speaker worked and the low E chords at :55 exposes that spongy chunkiness.
Nice.

Noel Gallagher recorded with one of those Tyger and Beaufort.
marcelcruzeiro 2 years ago
Yeah, I've read/heard that Noel is a big fan of Michael Clark's amps. His build quality and component choice is top shelf.

Great tone! Neil nailed. How loud was the amp to achive this sound? [is this a neighbour friendly volume?]

A 5e3 with a Celestion Blue is tops.I'm betting the highs and upper mids cut a little more than this recording represents.
The low end has a nice loose chunk to it.Great tone.
weare7R 3 years ago
Thanks! The Clark is a great amp. Great build quality.
This was recorded with a Zoom H4 handheld recorder. In person the upper mids and highs are much more present.
