Then finally got called in. the Doc sat me in a chair in the hallway. told me to open my mouth, glanced at my throat, said "ew!" and wrote me a script for antibiotics. Whole thing took about 30 seconds. later i got a bill for 7000 dollars! Part of the bill was a "presence" fee, where they charged me for WAITING in the ER per hour.

It doesn't make much of a different whether insurance companies or government pays, because its just pooling together of tax payers' dollars. The problem is the COST of health care. There is a difference if your insurance comes form the government or a private company, one just wants you to get health the other is looking to make a profit even if you suffer or even die because of it.

totally insane system for a modern democracy. The last thing you should have to worry about is money when it comes to healthcare. In my country it is free. People in between 18 and 65 pay contributions through taxes, but it's really minimal. I earn an average wage and I think I pay about £8 a week, which goes towards pension contributions as well. don't listen to all the anti-socialist crap your government are saying against it, free healthcare works.

If you think "Universal Health care " is the answer to this, your dead wrong. When my father died of a heart attack, we got an itemized bill that listed one of the medications at $5,000 per injection. An injection of about 5cc. That was 1998.
If you think that things will get better when government beurocrats are in charge, you'd better wake up and see just how badly run the VA hospitals are.

totally insane system for a modern democracy. The last thing you should have to worry about is money when it comes to healthcare. In my country it is free. People in between 18 and 65 pay contributions through taxes, but it's really minimal. I earn an average wage and I think I pay about £8 a week, which goes towards pension contributions as well. don't listen to all the anti-socialist crap your government are saying against it, free healthcare works.

Yeh, I guess calling it 'free' isn't the best description. All I meant is that it's free when you need medical attention. basically though, it's a very minimal payment and completely indiscriminating. I just think state run is better because you don't have to beg and barter with an insurance company to get your bills paid after. I hope you do get social healthcare system in place, I think it will change a lot of lives for the better. keep the pressure on your government! :)
