  • A little fast? Dude I think it's spot on. You sound like the Chieftains. They play it the same way. There are a couple of tempo stumbles but for the most part I think it sounds great! I could care less about your attitude or what you look like. It's what sounds right that counts.

  • i am more of a viola person myself, but it was good none the less

  • AMazing =D

  • @SurfThrashGuitar Dude, did you just call me a Scotsman?

  • Comment removed

  • @Joe1729 no, I removed it, because Im sorry I even stuck up for you now

  • @SurfThrashGuitar ?? Sorry if you can't take a joke (which is what it was intended as), I didn't insult you or anything.

  • @Joe1729 well either way, great playing man, I misread a comment and mistook it. I apologize

  • well i think its bloody excilent

  • apperently other people dont realize the fact that you put in REAL scottish add ins, such as the burl and the taps. so good on ya, nicely done

  • @clarabells22 Ye, I now that's not a fake but i was watching another video at the same time and put the comment here :S

    Sorry xDD

  • ...Wow

Seriously, I'm impressed. I've just started learning this and I came on youtube to see how other peopl do it and this just blew me away!! Keep playing, man! You're really good! Hope I eventually get the piece nailed down like you have!! :D

  • oh dear, its me again!

  • absolutely FAKE!!!!!!!

  • Cracking version matey! And aye I know exactly what ye mean aboot these classical types that try to do trad music. They have nae passion and fire aboot them. Love your stuff man, keep uploading :)

  • there's that cat on heat again, all the toms will be round soon.

  • good video, however at the start you did muck up a little. I know how cool it sounds when drowsy maggie is played slow and is then sped up to about 200 notes a minute (believe me, i've tried) but it actually sounds good when you play it fast and then slow down

  • @TheHiralis it also sounds good when you play it at a consistent tempo throughout. Like all tunes in fact

  • @DJFozter i know, but whenever i do drowsy maggie i also include crescendos and attitude to the song per se

  • Wait, let me rephrase what I was trying to say.

I know you don't hate the violin, just the way some people interpret this piece, but surely music is open to different interpretations, even if it's not to your taste?

That's what I was trying to say:)

And by the way I really do want to know about your instrument.

  • EPIC.

Am doing this on the violin atm, don't hate the violin please! :) Different to your version but surely music is open to different interpratations?

By the way what instrument are you playing exactly, i'm guessing from the fiddle family but it is a really interesting shape

  • pure crap

  • @VictoriaFiddlers LOL you are funny. Really making the Victoria Fiddle Society sound good!

Any chance that you might post a video of yourself playing something?

  • I love it, just ignore the violin purist who said you are holding your FIDDLE wrong, they don't know real music,

  • The fiddle is beautiful. Who cares how you hold your fiddle <3 Im learnin to play this song. I'm learning fiddle as i learn classical at the same time. Fiddle is more fun :P and it sound wayyy coooler XD

  • just slow down alittle bit and it will sound better the roozin was makeing the song off key alittle or the bow was over waxed just a tip

  • the tuning was great but it seemed a little relaxed. most of the notes weren't very clear. Also your superior attitude in the video description put me off a little. :( i love your violin though, it's beautiful.

  • Get a haircut!

  • @Grace3121 get a life

  • You blew it. Must be your bad attitude! Nice hair by the way. What do you call that? Retro hippie wanna be? Is that your mothers room by the way?

  • @53Slimman the hairstyle is known as a jewfro :D

  • @53Slimman LOL I love Youtube flaming! MOAR PLZ

  • @53Slimman someone's jealous...

  • @53Slimman Hey, dude, we should all stay polite, or not :/?

  • The NORMAL name for it is violin. -.-

  • you make the bowing and all look effortless. . . . 0_0 but it sounds awesome XD

  • great :D

  • well idgaf wat they say...your a gud violin player to me..and thats comin from a gud celetic violin player hereself

  • I'm trying to learn this song on the violin right now which is how i found this video and i just wanna say you did an amazing job! Sounds like you had more success on this tune than I have so far haha.

  • Hi Joe!

nice crisp playing with lovely clear ornaments tuneful and bouncy.

    Great!

Thanks for posting I'm trying to keep up with you on my low d whistle!!

btw... there are those who do and those who criticise.

    Cheers!

  • posture !! *shakes head*

never mind the guys posture I wish I could bloody well play Drowsy Maggie this good, I think I can play it but my version is awful... :-(

I searched the tune looking for inspiration, think I'll chuck my fiddle on the back of the fire, ha ha

  • Nice! Smooth style and bowing!

  • Rebelconformist, i am of the opinion that you need to keep your opinions to yourself.

    Loser.

  • good on ya, the other girls a muppet and shite

  • woah, you switch strings like lightning! Awesome

  • maybe if you had been classically trained you could learn to hold it with the correct posture...

  • @mcorr629 Well boo hoo.

  • @Joe1729 well if that guy can see something wrong with the way this guy holds the fiddle, he'd hate the way the morrocans play! and besides, i think if you get a decent sound out, it doesn't matter so much (and you do, so keep up the good work!).

  • @Joe1729 and by the way, where did you get that fiddle from?

  • @JackyRowe Tim Phillips. He lives in Wales, and he makes wicked awesome fiddles for a living. :-)

Thanks, by the way! (@ comment below)

  • @Joe1729 ah, i thought it was one of tims!! i live about 5 miles from him. he's a friend of tony revell, another luthier, and he was in my band for a short while.

  • maybe if you weren't such a dick you wouldn't fail so much :D

  • @mcorr629 LOL i learned classical and it sucks ass. I'm sick of classically trained violinists putting down irish fiddlers. We play better than you and don't need an orchestra to back us up' :)

  • This comment from me says that i am still angry with you for insulting me and 1000000s of others. I say you should shut up and keep your opinions to yourself, loser

  • @Rebelconformist82 WOOAAH this is a lot of unnecessary hate! I'd reserve that hate for much more worthwhile causes, if I were you.

  • NAAAH, just an observation of the sort of person you are, consider it constructive criticism!

  • @Rebelconformist82 Hm? It's not really criticism, and it's really not constructive...

  • How dare you insult classical fans like that! My hate comes through the computer, fool!

  • Love it!

  • Very good: not too fast, so a dancer could keep up, and very rhythmic.

Is that a baroque violin there, or just one without corners? Please let me know. :)

  • @4096quagmire No, it's not Baroque, just cornerless. Although the guy who made it, Tim Phillips, does make Baroque fiddles as well.

  • im learning to play this right now and im only about half this fast

  • @Romanokeydokeys It's not about speed. I know I played it fast here, but I probably should have slowed it down a little. Work on the phrasing, timing, tone, style, everything in fact, first. (I know I can't really talk here though, as I haven't exactly followed that advice myself, but hey... )

  • Seldom heard done so well ... and you let the tune play ... not so much spotlighting the fiddle technique as letting the song breathe.

  • wow u r amazing!!!!! luv this song! it is on the titanic! that is the first time i heard it! and luved it ever since

  • Gorenje comrade

  • So recharge your battery and do it over again. I am retired after 30 years in a symphony orchestra and have a gig in January, and you are right, changing genres isn't easy. I want to do it justice, and you are the best I've found. I am not too old to learn.

  • Nice job check out my version and tell emwhat you think :)

  • 0_0

  • very great

  • Looks like martin hayes/mark oats put in one person. sounds like... not them =P

  • ooh!!... that's sounds great! :D

  • a ver si ordenamos la casa

  • That is just incredible! What's also amazing is how nonchalant you are while playing such a technically brilliant piece. I loved it!

  • That was a great rendition. As for your comment on classical violinists trying to play fiddle tunes...seriously now. I'm one of those violinists. I am a teacher and my students learn through many kinds of music. i think people who try to play and enjoy everything and not pigeon-hole themselves are better off and more well-rounded musicians. If it wasn't for my Pepere playing fiddle, I wouldn't be where I am today. So don't be too quick to knock being musically open minded.

  • Nothing wrong with being open-minded, just if you're going to play in a style that's not your forte, know that it's not going to sound right. Don't think that just because you're a good classical musician, you can play in any style of music and it'll come out well.

Maybe you don't think like this, but I've met way too many classical musicians that do, that's all.

  • u play vary bad!!!!.. im just kidding it was awesome!!! im trying to learn this song to but its hard to play that fast!

  • i wouldn't want to play with you in a session. i won't catch up with you. LOL!

  • Hey, I thought it was great, and I love your violin! But I don't think you should smash classical violinists quite so much - I do understand that proper Irishy fiddling is an art form in itself (and you sound more Irish than I do at the moment!) and can't just be immediately assimilated if one has a classical background, but that doesn't mean that anyone should stick to one style - it's good musicianship to be able to play a diversity of styles! Best of luck anyway

  • Nice tune you played. The violin you're playing... is it a Tim Phillips violin? Must be! I think I recognize the open scroll. He makes wonderfull violins. Keep on playing those jigs and reels and hornpipes!

  • Of COURSE it's Tim Phillips! Open scroll, cornerless and TURQUOISE!!

  • sweet! I learn't to play this piece when i was 9 and it is one of my favourites still

  • i like the way you use only a little bit of bow and still make an amazing sound...

  • WOU......genial

  • Ironic to write those notes and then murder the tune yourself (I play flute - I'm afraid I do no better. It's horribly difficult to *not* murder tunes).

For a really nice rendition, check out Matt Molloy's cd "The heathery breeze"

  • well done

i know this one! i can play it! but when i go that fast, i tend to drop the bow...

  • Very nice. You might as well find something for that pinky to do though, it's not contributing to the effort out there.

  • Wow.. definately heard a false note. And you're playing waaay too fast. It's ear rape basically :|

  • Haha, your notes cracked me the hell up! I feel the same way about classical violinists and their damn fiddle books!

I think you did a really nice job on this actually. In my opinion you have a unique style and sound. I really enjoyed it.

  • omg! you can play all parts in one go! omg!

i can only do the easy violin part lol

i'm only on my grade 3 ! lol

  • very good music!!!!lol

  • Thank you so much!

  • That's awesome! What violin is that, by the way?

    Thanks!

  • It's a Tim Phillips. In this particular video, I suspect the violin itself is actually better than the tune being played on it, or indeed, the person playing it...

  • I actually thought that you were really good!

P.S. Do you know a place in the U.S. where you can buy your violin?

  • yeah, nice tone on that despite your lack of effort even. what violin are you playing/what strings?

  • this guy is amazing

  • :D u r a bit out of tune :P but nice style

  • Thank you for this answer!!!

  • Good job. Played like a fiddler !

  • yeah...this is the true fiddle!! Not like that "plastic smiling girl" ;oD

  • awsome song dude i wish i could play

  • Thanks! Well, it's never too late to start learning...
