MA2, I served from 2002 to 2010. I enjoyed my time as a master at arms. It's tough work though. You will be cold/hot, tired and sleep deprived most of the time, but it's totally worth it!

@luckyluckett26 Lucky is right, it is pretty much all anti terrorism and force protection now, which I love. Look up the MSRON units here on you tube, we do a lot of that type of work, and RIVRON is another. There are a lot of other job ratings in the Navy that do them as well, but the MA rate is pre qualified more than most of them in this setting, and we take on a lot of leadership roles within them. It's a great job, but not much actual "police work"
In my experience, the Navy's MA rating is a glorified security guard when it comes to police work. but from a force protection point, the MA rating has some pretty good programs, but many are being shut down for the reserves to take over with. It is a needed job and one that is harsh and has few rewards.
If anyone that is a MA really thinks that they are "Police Officers" then they pretty much think a Mall Cop is a real Policeman. I've been a MA for several years, even the acting CMA onboard a ship. I've done shipboard life, Mobile Security, been on ESTs, imbedded seciruty, forward deployed seciruty, sitting on oil platforms off the coast of Iraq while Iran launches mortars causing the oil plats to shudder and two shore commands as Base Police.
If you have it in your mind to be a "Police Officer" , the MA rating is not a place to be though. Yes, in a sense you are the Police, but in many ways you are not. MAs lack a centralized authority such as a Provost Marshal and therefore are at the whim of their commanding officers and their Chain of Command. If you are looking for the Police experience, I would recommend other branches of service. If you are just looking to enter the Navy, regardless of job, then join the Navy as whatever.
I have one question! Do they get deployed to Afghan or do they volunteer I'm deciding between SF for the airforce or Ma can you pick your duty station? How long is tech school?

@Mr2pacalypse master at arms RARELY get sea duty... 65% chance you'll be attached to a regular base security detachment (gate duty, patrol stuff, maybe harbor depending where your at) but you on a ship might not happen unless you get lucky but on the ship all you do is brig duty and watch commander stuff for the ship "it sucks."
@Mr2pacalypse MAs get sea duty. There are differnt types of sea duty though. Generally speaking, there are MAs on ships, usually big decks (carriers, LHA, LPD, etc...), you may also be able to get sea duty in a squadron, where you are basically a land based command and deploy out, like Marine Expiditionary Commands (formerly know as Mobile Security Squadrons). Also, overseas bases are considered "sea duty" for MAs.

@Mr2pacalypse U.S. citizen, hold a current driver's license, have good command of the English language, normal color perception, 20/20 correctable sight, and normal hearing. The candidate must be able to pass the Navy physical fitness requirements as well as a medical exam. ASVAB minimum score of 45 in word knowledge and a minimum score of 55 in arithmetic reasoning and a combined score of 100.Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.

@chloe28622 the training in A School is developed to be challenging but is gender Neutral. Start running if your not already they run 4 to 5 miles a day , three days a week. And you will go straight to A school no days off until you complete it.
MA2 here -If you're an E-1 through E-3 yes, this rate will probably suck as much any rate will. You will be standing gate and doing dirty work. All of you MASA's that say your rate sucks, its going to be the same in any rate. You are always tasked with the dirty work at a lower rank, and we all had to go through it. When you get to be a Petty Officer you will have more opportunities to do fun stuff. So don't sit here and talk shit about the MA community like you know something.

@gardena17 im not sure what your question is in regards to? When you say "core" if you ment core sections of the asvab, I got around mechanical, weapons, and problem solving. Now if you ment "score" I scored a 58 the first time I took it, I was a little rusty from being out of school for 2 1/2 years. (which however still qualified me) But the second time I took it after studying a little I got an 88. But dont forget, the Navy is VERY competitive now compared to when I first joined. Shoot for 80s

To all people joining the Navy to be an MA: don't do it. No rate has a worse chain of command in generl. Yes they buddy fuck the hell out of themselves. I was an MA for 4 1/2 years and just got out in Aug. and I can tell you that EVERY SINGLE SAILOR I STOOD POST WITH E-5 and below said they hated being a MA My career was taken from me because of a stupid curfew violation and a shitty chain of command that couldn't back me up when I went to Captain's Mast for my first timefor the curfew violation

@chloe28622 the training in A School is developed to be challenging but is gender Neutral. Start running if your not already they run 4 to 5 miles a day , three days a week. And you will go straight to A school no days off until you complete it.

MA2 here -If you're an E-1 through E-3 yes, this rate will probably suck as much any rate will. You will be standing gate and doing dirty work. All of you MASA's that say your rate sucks, its going to be the same in any rate. You are always tasked with the dirty work at a lower rank, and we all had to go through it. When you get to be a Petty Officer you will have more opportunities to do fun stuff. So don't sit here and talk shit about the MA community like you know something.

@gardena17 im not sure what your question is in regards to? When you say "core" if you ment core sections of the asvab, I got around mechanical, weapons, and problem solving. Now if you ment "score" I scored a 58 the first time I took it, I was a little rusty from being out of school for 2 1/2 years. (which however still qualified me) But the second time I took it after studying a little I got an 88. But dont forget, the Navy is VERY competitive now compared to when I first joined. Shoot for 80s

MAA. it' a great rate if and good training, resume builder, but when it comes down to your shipmates IE chain of command fighting for you, they literly turn their back on you and everyone envolve in any complain.
