To those of us who love the music but don't care about the gender of the musicians? Not in the slightest.
But to the musicians? Evidently it matters quite a bit, so much so that their personas & songs not only contain a message about that very thing, they also tell interviewers that they can't see why straight men come to their shows when their music isn't "for" them and the guys won't "get it" anyway.
@mickycisme Regardless of whether or not lovers are morally perfect by saying those things, it reflects the world we live in. They wouldn't feel that they were writing songs that straight guys "won't get anyway" if there wasn't enough experience behind it to support it. I can't imagine showing my guys friends this song without a strong averse reaction. So while yes, we should applaud the straight men who maybe DO get it, we can't ignore the fact that 90%+ of them probably won't.
@jacquelinethegreat I don't know any guys who had a "strong averse reaction" to this song or video, but I'll go along with your premise: it does reflect the world we live in, and the prejudices people have. Including the prejudices of the artists, which we aren't supposed to talk about.
My genderqueer friends consider this to be THE defining issue of the day: that some people get flack for flying their flag, others pick a flag they know will get flack because they get off on feeling oppressed.
@mickycisme My apologies. I should have read into the context of your original comment better. You're right. To say that their music isn't "for" anyone is completely ridiculous and unacceptable. Also the words "strong averse reaction" were probably poor diction but i really do feel like if i showed anyone this video, they'd make comments. Good for you not to have that outlook.. But my friend who is even much more chill agrees with me on that one.
love it

So does it matter? It does. But it shouldn't.
