great videos man! thanks for ur channel learn alot! ik an avid hunter, fisher, and hiker. by the way im a sock guy too, i always buy wool socks and i always check the tag for the actual wool content.
Hey nutn, speaking of waterproof rainshells you might want to check out the arctyrix jackets with gore-tex tech. They are virtually waterproof to the point of duck feathers!
Hi Nutnfancy and other Outdoor enthusiasts! Recently, ive started hiking and camping a lot. I have a nice layering system for my torso for different conditions, but do you have any tips for layering for pants? I have some thin synthetic pants (zipoff) which work great in summer, but what type of clothing should i look at for campin in cooler conditions (even up to 20°Fahrenheit)??
As i watch this i'm grilling shrimp for a girl i work with, it's a her last day. So testing food plus watching nutn equals awesome if the math is right.
hi nutn ur videos are great i was wondering how do u wash gloves properly mine always seam to go hard (crispy) and are very hard to break back in thanks dude
I took the plunge and purchased some items from LL bean and had it shipped to Australia. One of the items was the windchallenger what a great company and the value for money since the AUS dollar is high blows away local competition with their cheap made in china junk selling for twice and even three times as much. I wouldn't do it any other way now!
Military surp. gloves are also very good. And are pretty cheap. U can also purchase liners for less than four dollars just in case it gets really cold. In my experience they are good down below freezing. The same with military surplus boots and liners
A major problem with all of this, and most equipment out there is that is it not availible in white. I live in colorado and there are time when ANYTHING you're wearing that isn't white is going to point you out BIG TIME... hate it, can't find anything in white.
dude on gloves I use the weather sealent that I got from cabelas! It works on everything. from my canvas tent, to my gortex, my old boots from Iraq, to my maxpedition wallet! NO JOKE BRO!
you say you like long pants if i were to wear sinthetic shorts and long ski or work sox would that surfice in your eyes. take into consideration im an australian
Couple of ideas that work for me... I would recommend you trying woolen socks and base-layer. Natural material which kills bacteria, thus preventing smells. Wool also keeps warm when wet (thin wool still dries as fast as synthetics). I was using all kinds of synthetics before I found wool. Also I've found that traditional "Sami knife" kills the need for most of the other knives.
haha.. alright well im not gunna say im a huge hiker because i have never gone hiking before... but i have been in the snow a few times and i have never been dressed right... rashes SUCK... lol they are one of the worse things you can get when out anywhere where you are going to be in a moist area... but anyways... What would i want to wear in the snow... thx :D
hey nutn you know what else helps chafing? bike shorts. i use em for soccer and they've prevent strawberries ( the rash/cut from sliding on grass/dirt) i use for for hiking and they prevent any sort of chafe/dangle if you know what i mean. not too expensive and they wick moisture great for hunting when you hike in and sit for 2-4 hours.
I am 6' 2" but very skinny 33" waist line. It hard to find pants and especially jackets because I have huge brood shoulders aka bodybuilder "once". Any Ideas since I only seem to find the lengthy pants in my waist size which are convertibles and I hate those?
i like the military grade pants..65% polyester 35% cotton..i think they are both rugged but they let your skin breathe...100% synthetic does not do that
Just a newbie comment on gloves, but I got a pair of bamboo gloves with rubber grip coating in Walgreens. They are super light weight, and bamboo dries easy, is breathable to keep your hands from sweating, and are anti-bacterial, so they don't get that famous damp smell. Just thought you might be intereseted in them
Nice system Nutn. I love those Mechanix gloves as well. You know what you should do? A video on the proper way to pack a pack. Lots of dudes don't know how to do that. I know when I started out in the scouts I had NO idea...I used to put all my heavy stuff in my sleeping bag pouch, I didn't know any better back then lol!
thnx 4 vids. The anorak you mentioned is no longer provided. Can you or veri guide us tnpers on what is comparable in the llbean line or another line.
bivouac. Its essentially an improvised shelter, either with a stick frame and leaves covering or with a bivy sack which is almost like a large sleeping bag that you and your sleeping bag go in to keep dry in place of a tent.
Basically, he wrote several manufacturers and told them what he thought was missing in the tents that were being produced at that point. Some of them wrote back, but LL Bean liked what he said and formed a relationship with him. -- Veri (Nutn's sister)
Great videos, thanks for all the info. I have been searching for the Anorak you mentioned but cannot find it anywhere, any good ideas where to find these items? Thanks for all your help.
nutnfacny, man you are a great help. But can I just request one thing ?? When you are doing these part by part videos please post all the links in the description. It helps a lot man !
I mean for instance. I see in the related vid section right now part 4,6,7 no 3 if I had the link it would have been great. Thanks anyway man !
Just wondering, have you tried Cupron Socks? (Google it)
They have a military version as well as lighter weight normal socks.
Advantages are they are anti-microbial/bacterial, and they will literally never smell. You dont even have to wash them and they wont stink. Found that trait usefull in the bush.
In addition, if your feet get wet, you wont have any trenchfoot or other infections, and if you have problems with athletes foot, they will cure it....
Just a couple additions from my experiences backpacking in the Olympic and Cascade ranges, gators are a must. All through the year dew will be present and any small plants you walk past will soak your ankles without them. Also, synthetics are an absolute must. Since fires are illegal in most areas worth visiting there will be no way to dry your cotton clothing, trust me it's not fun :(
I just found your vids today. I have many of the same items. But money was real tight when I got my stuff. Ya can't beat LL Bean! Last year I stranded myself on purpose in Northern Maine for an extended stay. Waaay off the beaten path. Wish I had seen your vids before THAT. But it wasGREAT!! Rock on n keep it up. Love the vids. Thanks! Oh, and ya can't beat LLBeans quality guarantee. They ROCK! And NO I never worked for them. lol
5 star Awesome, you bet. This is perhaps my favorite series yet. Nutnfancy pourin down the knowledge. Thanks bro for all your time once again. Like you said in the past give a man a fish feed him for a day, teach a man to fish feed him for life. Well this rings true here once again. See ya in round 3. Jet over and out
Glad you covered all this clothing its very important to check weather updates before you go out as you may be prepared for one thing then hit by another. Also sweating is very dangerous in certain survival situations and can be a killer as hyperthermia sets in, so yes clothing for the day and clothing for the night, some places it can be 45°C in the day then plummet to 0°C at night

Cotton: Hikers call it "the death cloth". Better believe it!
francescaloves2hike 2 years ago 3
Cotton is good for relaxing on a beach in the Caribbean. Its also good for an office/dress shirt (I prefer linen, it lasts longer).
For difficult outdoor situations, you hit it right on the head, "death cloth". Nice!
