That's a marvellous idea! A metallic bow could be built which would act as the string agitator. The relays might be difficult to mount onto the cello though.

The description to this video is way over my head in the realm of electronics... but the sounds created are great! I find especially interesting the 'harmonics' created around 2:40 by the washer.
