An interesting thing is that Trautmann, obviously a legend in England, is pretty unknown in Germany. Probably because he never played for the national team.
Trautmann was released from a prisoner of war camp in 1948 -signed for Man City in 49 amid huge protests - 20,000 people at one rally.but soon endeared himself to fans due to his performances at the club.Must be rated as one of best keepers of all time.
i went to see man city vs birmingham with my family last season where we won 5-1 and there was a little ceremony with trautmann mainly about this game and how he helped anglo-german relations was a great day sounded like a massive lightning storm when we all started clapping
that is something you dont see in football today.. a keeper breaking his neck and finishing the match.. thats what you call bravery and sportsmanship.. legend.. ronaldo could brake a nail and he would be crying
@colinprb93 Yep, his story still amazes me - soon he was endeared not only by City supporters but supporters around the country. And people say City don't have any history. Very poor knowledge I must say
@tine214 Yes they did have their own commentator, Peter Lloyd.
If you're interested in this sort of stuff I thoroughly recommend this website [homepage.ntlworld.com/carousel/ITVfootball68-83.html] and this page [homepage.ntlworld.com/carousel/ITV/cupfinals_bw.html] in particular.
Wow ...just think how little players like Trautmann were paid in those days. Money and contractual obligations had nothing to do with it ...he just toughed it out for his club, his team mates and the supporters ....what a legendary performance!
"even manchester united supporters will be cheering" so true, most united fans, even today, are majorly impressed by bert trautman carrying on playing!
Trautmann struggling on with his injury was one of the iconic moments at the old Wembley, up there with the White Horse Final and Bobby Moore on the shoulders of his teammates in 1966.
Lovely to see this great old footage and a true gentleman and real legend in Bert Trautmann.
obviously, the commentator had no idea about the extent of trautmann's injury.
"he's probably forgotten all about his bad neck now".
trautmann spent three days with the broken neck before going to the doctor, as the pain was unbearable. closer inspection revealed that his neck was broken in 3 places. the wembley doctors, however, failed to notice an injury.
Bert Trautmann, a German playing in England only a decade after the end of the Second World War.probably did more to mend relations between Britain and Germany than any politician.
Wow, almost a wonder that he stayed on his feet.
An interesting thing is that Trautmann, obviously a legend in England, is pretty unknown in Germany. Probably because he never played for the national team.

Bert Trautmann and Chuck Norris once both tried to roundhouse kick each other and collided. The result was the European Cup.
