  • Very good. This is a guy whos gone back and broke down the song and

    got the timing down.

  • Excellent my man!!! Keeping the dream alive.....

  • NAILED IT!

  • it was so good i had to watch it again just to make sure there was no witchcraft involved in the making of the film. wow!!!

  • holy fuck this guy is good

  • Man... veery greate!

  • Fanfuckingtastic man!! I agree with a previous spectator! You perfected that dude! I've seen some come close, but never like that! Again, timing! Great job! :)

  • awesome, awesome .. loved it..neal peart is not an easy act and you just nail it!!

  • lm blown away...........

  • That's an ace version...not trying too hard to replicate neil's kit drum for drum, which makes a change on here!...you somehow getting some great feel of your own in there too. Me and a friend are currently recording the whole thing (not professionally...just for a laugh) and will hope to post a version up in a couple of months. Nice one. Ged.

  • :((((( dude wtf!!

    im jealous of your set.

    but awesome vid :)

  • awesome!!

  • hey mean thats good , you are a good drumer , if you play the drums how here , you cant be the next neil peart .

  • Mully says, "YOUROCK"

  • Man you are good...so effortless...great work.

  • woah very good man! good job

  • I like watching your videos as a wanna-be Rush drummer, but I have one comment/question. At the :30 point, I *thought* that the pattern was running 16th notes on the hihat with the offbeat cymbal hits on a ride near the HH and the snare hits as you play them -- rather than the straight ride hits that you play. Are you mimicing Neal's method here, or is it what you figured out? Either way, damn good and I wish I could play as clean as you do. Great work!

  • danm your good.

  • you really rocked this song man!! looks like fun and alot of work

  • good job

  • I like your style and flair, wish I could crank the sound up a bit more... Thank you! :)

  • @cjrezler Check out my very recent Subdivisions in HD, with new drumset, much superior sound and both feet and hand views. Maybe you can crank that.

  • SO right on

  • that's it! just simple. just amazing.

  • Awesome!..makin it look easy ;)

  • damm man that was wicked awesome!!!! youve got a great sound coming from your set to.....

  • Very nice. One of my favorite Rush songs. You nailed it dude.

  • very tight cover u did neal justice

  • What kind of sticks do you use? One of my favourites is the Pro-Mark nylon tipped Mike Portnoy sticks. I can beat them to death. Zildjian has a new Black Dip out and I might try them. I don't play much anymore, and was a good/very good drummer when I did play a lot(30 years back).

  • @tyme4mike re: Sticks, I use Vic Firth AH5B, They have the dimensions of a 5B, but the weight of a 5A, so they are very easy to manipulate. I used promarks 747s for about 5 years, but I found that with my style they simply didn't last very well and became very expensive. Also, I NEVER play with nylon tips, it gives a very 'artificial' feeling to my playing. Cheers!

  • Sweet drummin'...

  • Great cover of a great tune!! Your drums are so authentic sounding to the original version. How are you recording it and getting it to sound so clean through the camera mike. I did the same vid, and my camera cant handle the volume. Again, great job.

  • awesome man

  • Holy Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeitballs! I hope Geddy and Alex have your number if "what's his name" ever falls down a well. HA! Nicely done. Thoroughly entertaining!

  • Just curious, do you play by music? Do you play what you hear? It's my impression that you are more faithful to Rush's music and it seems to me that you play it note for note. Just wonderin'. Very good, btw.

  • I just generally play by ear. If something is very difficult to figure out, I will methodically write it out in musical notation form and then learn it slowly until I can get it up to speed, but for the most part, I just play what I think sounds right. It's not always on the right part of the drum kit, but the rhythm is pretty accurate.

  • AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!! 5/5

  • Very nice. Although, remember to normalize next time.

  • At the time this video was made, I was just recording the sound and video simultaneously and putting them into my computer. What you see/hear is what I got from the two sources. Now, I am separately recording the video and audio and editing it, so I can normalize now. I'm still working on things. I'm not a sound man. It's coming along slowly but surely. check out my recent version of this song in HD.

  • got that paulieboy

  • love the pony tail ha ha almost as cool as you goaty better effort here tho this is definatly one of pearts easiest efforts to copy tho keep up good work

  • Dude.. best Subdivisions cover so far. Great feeling and accuracy. Good work!!

  • I'm trying to learn drums to play Rush's songs, but I can say one thing, it will take me a long, long time to reach that level!!

  • Nice.....Neil WOULD be proud...nice chops, kid!

  • Man i've heard this song a thousand times and you hit it right on!!

  • Very, very goooooood ...!!!!!!!

  • its a china cymbal

  • What is the name of the upside down symbol to your right?

  • and its not upside down =p thats how its suppose to be

  • you rock my friend!!!! sweet kit too. keep doing what your doing

  • I Have Listened to This Tune for 27 Years, I know Every Note. You Nailed It Pal, Beautiful Job. Can I Ask? How Many Hours of Practice did You Put In Before You Knew You Had It? Thanks Paulie!

  • Wow Fantastic!!!! Its nice to see someone who can play all the little nuances that make this song awesome. Great Job keep up the good work.

  • Very, very impressed!!

    Peart would be proud.

  • Holy shit man that is perfection right there

  • Great job man! This is one of my favorite tracks drum-wise from Rush.

  • very nice, with good production quality. would like to see u play some terry bozzio material, US Drag off Spring Session M with a classic 6/4 linar grove for example.

  • that's an impressive drum set...the funny thing is that neil peart's is like double that! nice cover, btw :D

  • Actually, in this video, I have the EXACT number of toms (albeit, some different sizes) that Neil currently plays and one less china cymbal, but one more splash. So, I think you may be exaggerating just a tad.

    p

  • @Pauliewanna he may be talking about that one with the xilophone and the E-drum things hehe

i really like this video, not to say the song :P

  • Second Nail Peart !

  • chills!

  • I think this is the closest anyone has ever come to 1-upping Peart...

    6/5

  • hoooooly shit that was awesome!

  • its such a delight watchin u man. Awesome technique

  • LOL!! SWEEET!

  • holy shit man, awesome cover!

  • Dude this is sick. Seriously bro. Fuckin nailed it! I know for a fact that you nailed it. This is one of those songs that is programmed in my mind eternally. Sick bro. You the man!

  • As a fellow Rush fan and musician, I spent weeks learning Subdivisions on keyboards and this is by far the best drumming to this song I've seen. I would play keys for you on this song any day!!! As far as I could tell, its damn near perfect. And I should know...as many times I have listened to and played this song.....You were awesome!!! Congrats.

  • U rock!

  • Wow!

  • Awesome indeed!

  • GREAT JOB !!

  • tas cabron!!!

    suenas como Neal Peart igualito!

    Congrats from Utah!!!

  • u rock!

nice drum kit by the way! Is it TAMA?

  • in this video, it's just an old Pearl Export. I just got a brand new pearl Reference kit that smokes. check out any of my last 7 or 8 videos and that'll be the new kit. Check out the new version of Subdivisions in HD -- it looks and sounds much better.

  • pauliewanna...be neil peart i think!!! seriously dude, you are inspiring. i've been trying for awhile man, and still cant get down a.i.c's "no excuses" beat. could you through i qwik lesson up for that??? btw, are you canadian??

  • SOLID as fucking rock, man.

Lots of good drummers out there, but I find that many don't play with focused *conviction*. You seem to understand the importance of that behind the kit.

Keep up the great work. Good luck to you.

  • I FUCKING LOVE YOU. KEEP ON ROCKING!

  • you make it look too easy absolutely AMAING!!!!

  • Paulie..youve achieved a dream ive always had but never realized...keep up the fantastic work...my compliments.

  • Fan-freakin-tastic!! I thought I could play Subdivisions pretty well... but now I know I SUCK!!!!

(you did miss one note tho...)

  • For all practical intents and purposes, that was perfect. Nicely done.

  • You're a monster Paulie, chapeau!

  • To quote Jeremy Irons (as both Claus Von Bulow AND Uncle Scar) "You have NO idea!"

  • Hey Paulie. Great song and performance.

    Congratulations for playing so well.

it's a great pleasuro to see you playing and "singing".

    Very good!!!

    Best wishes from Brazil.

  • Down to the T - you kicked it! Super!

  • Nicely done!!!

  • great job on a great song! hard to play like neal peart but you nailed it.

  • Sigh... can play guitar and keys, and the only time I get jealous of drummers is watching you guys play Neal Peart stuff :-D Amazing!

  • i used to be in a "rush" cover band in the mid eighties i guess.

i love there songs and i know this song very well.

i think your playing is really good.

    i really enjoyed listening.

  • Better, Now it looks like your having fun with it. Good Job.

  • I guess the longer the video is up there, the more relaxed I look ;-P

  • I can't get the part from 30 seconds to 40 down right

  • i have instructional video that is totally based on THAT part and how to play it. Check out Rush Licks 3 I think it is.

  • Not bad, a-little stiff but nice.

  • That's about as relaxed as I get.

  • UM. U ROCK.

  • i love how how u hit the cymbals so exagerated.....majes me laugh

  • It's called concentration.

  • wow u r good!

  • Its just so kool to see it being played...so much fun to watch.. thanks! And good playing.

  • Finally someone plays Rush with the same feel. Lots of guys get it right note fo rnote but very few play with the feeling like Peart. Nice job.

  • WOW!!!! NICE :D

  • Be cool or be cast out

That's how you played it. Nice job, the ultimate high hat song I call it.

  • So much f***ing energy at the end. You have obvious talent but your passion is what made this vid kick ass.

  • you made that look easy.....impressive.

  • That's what happens when you want a true player. I laugh at 'musicians' who fake it using machines to play the beat. Acoustic players are the real musicians. Never forget this.

  • great technique!!! You also sing along side the song. In one word: ECXELENT

  • fucking amazing dude

  • Great job conforming to another drummer's style. Honestly, I couldn't begin to come close. However, have you submitted anything original to youtube, because I would enjoy viewing how you have evolved beyond the miming of your influences.

  • u r unbelievable!

  • Very well done dude. Nice and smooth. I like the flavor you added. Did I mention smooth? Effortless and that is hard to do with any Peart song. Hell, even Neil doesn't look effortless. Good job.

  • Very well done.

  • I'm glad the captains of industry have pulled this one yet... Love the narrated version and the clinic as well. And I do not drum. If I bought a drum kit now, my wife would think I was going through a mid-life crisis and seek help. I'll just watch the videos. (While I can)

  • dude that was impressive not only some stick tricks but also singing and playing well done sir

  • that is one of my favourite songs. U killed it dude. i love the sound of ur drums especially the toms. keep rockin with rush..

  • i think that was the only 100% accurate subdivisions i've seen.. other than lord peart himself :)

  • dude you rock, you play just like peart, at least as far as i can tell lol

  • Awesome job dude

    RUSH IS AWESOME =D

    ROCK ON!!!!!!!!

  • nice kit buddy Rockkkk on 5/5!!

  • fantastic sir!!! thoroughly enjoyed watching that !

  • Could you do a video on how to do the cross-handed highhat thingy, I've been trying to do it for months and I always mess up as I hit the snare. That was fan-freakin-tastic, great job paul.

  • You smoked it perfect.

  • I don't know much about drums _ but I know enough to know you kick ass behind that kit. Fun to watch. I've loved Rush for 30 years now and youtube is opening doors that weren't even there 4 years ago. I also enjoyed your tribute to John Rutsey. I cracked a beer after that one myself... great job.

  • Best cover of this song I've ever seen, you're truly an amazing drummer!

  • Incredible... Good work fella..

  • awsome cover man..!!

  • What's the secret behind the sound of your kit?

I play a 60's model Ludwig set with two Tamas 8 and 10 (which sound good) but I find my kit booms too much.

    Any suggestions??

    Great job!

  • FIVE STARS ONCE AGAIN POLLY!

    great job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    what on your kit booms?

    toms

    bass drum

    snare?

    i know a few tricks

    message me

  • NICE one- handed roll at 1:26, and nice fill at 4:33. Question: How did you do those bass triplets at the end? Is that heel- toe, or double bass?

  • My initial reaction was "who is this disgusting fatbody nerd who will never ever have sex with a female human" which rapidly changed to "who is this drum GOD who perfectly performs my favorite Rush song as a skilled percussionist?" Well done, sir.

  • Wow, thanks!... I guess. My number is 35. What's yours?

  • Seriously, that was a jerky thing to say and I apologize. I had a few adult beverages and tried to be funny and it came off mean and stupid. But the second half was absolutely true and I mean it. I seriously am working on my drumming just to be able to do what you do (and do easily!) By that I mean, my drum goals are simply to be able to play my favorite Rush songs with a semblance of skill. I have a LONG way to go.

And I don't know what my number is, which probably means I suck.

  • why don't you speak your mind? lol. Shawn Lane was a fat guitarist and nobody can top the emotive quality of his guitar playing. I don't think weight and musical prowess have a correlation. In any case, well done Pauliewanna. Beautifully executed...what a song.

  • Best regards from Brazil. You're really great.

  • I shit you not....that was the best Subdivisions cover I've ever seen.

  • I'm blown away, amazing job.

I just watched your open letter vid to Neal Peart about the copyright issue, and I'd like to know if they're still deleting vids and suspending accountsfor that matter. Thanks in advance for the answer.

  • I'm watching all your videos and I am blown away....

  • Dude!!

  • You have a pretty little drum :(

Five star all the way man :D

    Great job

  • nicely done

  • yer rolls @ the end are stellar ... phenomenal

  • Awsome playing dude!!!!.

    Keep it up!!!

  • hell of a good cover, excellent playing

  • woww!!! your good kiddo love this song

  • Kiddo, he says he's 42 what are you like 100? lol

  • You're pretty badass!

  • wow how long u been playin?

  • THAT just got added to the ol favorites! Nice

  • Paul...What instructional videos would you recommened for a beginner? I've been banging on a set for a couple years, but nothing serious at all. I just started taking lessons 2 weeks ago, to learn how to read music and get more serious. Thanks for the inspiration..

  • Paul, i saw this video the other day and was inspired. Thanks for all the work that you're doing. Its appreciated probably more then you know. Keep doing what you're doing.

  • you should be very proud of this video you are a good drummer and are amazing!

  • Playing Peart bascially verbatim on a song that's far from easy is quite a feat. I always like to wonder how big Neil's grin would be if he saw you playing that!

  • u could join a band and make money if u dont mind playing country....

  • Hey...will you like....download all of your drumming skill into my brain? Please??

  • Nice Job Paulie!!!

  • are you pro trained? you seem a bit too good to be just a garage band player, nice job

  • Nope. I"ve never taken a lesson in my life and I didn't start until I was 22. Just a LOT of work in the early years -- I used to play 6 or 7 hours a day on the weekend -- and extreme dedication in the last 5 years to bring my game up to where it is. Oh, and all the instructional videos really helped push me to limits I could never imagine.

  • I still consider myself an amateur since I don't make a living playing the drums. It's just a very serious hobby.

  • Dude, what instructional videos? any suggestions. I played drums all throughout Jr High and High School, but that's about the level I stayed at. I would love to be able to play these songs.

  • You are the BEST!!! You make it look so easy, but we all know how hard that is to do. John Bonham, and Neil Peart... #1 drummers in the world! Please put some more videos up! Thanks for the show!!!!

  • WOW!

    Great Job bro!!

I came loking for some tips so the band can cover this tune and you answered my questions.

  • I also have a narrated version of this where I do a voice-over of everything that is going on in the song. If you want to check that out, it might be even more helpful.

  • good job from a peart fan

  • Wow! Great job.

  • That is probably one of the best I have seen for any drummer to play along to any backing track. Well done dude.

  • That was great man! Peace

  • your good

  • Awesome stick twirl bro!

  • hahah i wish i had the skill

  • Great Cover! I've Always Wondered This... Who Say "Subdivisions" In The Song? lol... The Low Voice O.O

  • Alex, through a highpass filter

  • Rock on Brother! Awsome!

  • thanks to you i can at least do the intro!!

  • Brother you nailed that fucking song! Not easy to play a Rush song so good.

  • btw what ride is that cause thrs are paragon at local store for 250 but if that doesnt work out yours sounds great
