Fanfuckingtastic man!! I agree with a previous spectator! You perfected that dude! I've seen some come close, but never like that! Again, timing! Great job! :)
That's an ace version...not trying too hard to replicate neil's kit drum for drum, which makes a change on here!...you somehow getting some great feel of your own in there too. Me and a friend are currently recording the whole thing (not professionally...just for a laugh) and will hope to post a version up in a couple of months. Nice one. Ged.
I like watching your videos as a wanna-be Rush drummer, but I have one comment/question. At the :30 point, I *thought* that the pattern was running 16th notes on the hihat with the offbeat cymbal hits on a ride near the HH and the snare hits as you play them -- rather than the straight ride hits that you play. Are you mimicing Neal's method here, or is it what you figured out? Either way, damn good and I wish I could play as clean as you do. Great work!
What kind of sticks do you use? One of my favourites is the Pro-Mark nylon tipped Mike Portnoy sticks. I can beat them to death. Zildjian has a new Black Dip out and I might try them. I don't play much anymore, and was a good/very good drummer when I did play a lot(30 years back).
@tyme4mike re: Sticks, I use Vic Firth AH5B, They have the dimensions of a 5B, but the weight of a 5A, so they are very easy to manipulate. I used promarks 747s for about 5 years, but I found that with my style they simply didn't last very well and became very expensive. Also, I NEVER play with nylon tips, it gives a very 'artificial' feeling to my playing. Cheers!
Great cover of a great tune!! Your drums are so authentic sounding to the original version. How are you recording it and getting it to sound so clean through the camera mike. I did the same vid, and my camera cant handle the volume. Again, great job.
Holy Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeitballs! I hope Geddy and Alex have your number if "what's his name" ever falls down a well. HA! Nicely done. Thoroughly entertaining!
Just curious, do you play by music? Do you play what you hear? It's my impression that you are more faithful to Rush's music and it seems to me that you play it note for note. Just wonderin'. Very good, btw.
I just generally play by ear. If something is very difficult to figure out, I will methodically write it out in musical notation form and then learn it slowly until I can get it up to speed, but for the most part, I just play what I think sounds right. It's not always on the right part of the drum kit, but the rhythm is pretty accurate.
At the time this video was made, I was just recording the sound and video simultaneously and putting them into my computer. What you see/hear is what I got from the two sources. Now, I am separately recording the video and audio and editing it, so I can normalize now. I'm still working on things. I'm not a sound man. It's coming along slowly but surely. check out my recent version of this song in HD.

very nice, with good production quality. would like to see u play some terry bozzio material, US Drag off Spring Session M with a classic 6/4 linar grove for example.
Actually, in this video, I have the EXACT number of toms (albeit, some different sizes) that Neil currently plays and one less china cymbal, but one more splash. So, I think you may be exaggerating just a tad.
Dude this is sick. Seriously bro. Fuckin nailed it! I know for a fact that you nailed it. This is one of those songs that is programmed in my mind eternally. Sick bro. You the man!
As a fellow Rush fan and musician, I spent weeks learning Subdivisions on keyboards and this is by far the best drumming to this song I've seen. I would play keys for you on this song any day!!! As far as I could tell, its damn near perfect. And I should know...as many times I have listened to and played this song.....You were awesome!!! Congrats.
in this video, it's just an old Pearl Export. I just got a brand new pearl Reference kit that smokes. check out any of my last 7 or 8 videos and that'll be the new kit. Check out the new version of Subdivisions in HD -- it looks and sounds much better.
pauliewanna...be neil peart i think!!! seriously dude, you are inspiring. i've been trying for awhile man, and still cant get down a.i.c's "no excuses" beat. could you through i qwik lesson up for that??? btw, are you canadian??
Lots of good drummers out there, but I find that many don't play with focused *conviction*. You seem to understand the importance of that behind the kit.
That's what happens when you want a true player. I laugh at 'musicians' who fake it using machines to play the beat. Acoustic players are the real musicians. Never forget this.
Great job conforming to another drummer's style. Honestly, I couldn't begin to come close. However, have you submitted anything original to youtube, because I would enjoy viewing how you have evolved beyond the miming of your influences.
Very well done dude. Nice and smooth. I like the flavor you added. Did I mention smooth? Effortless and that is hard to do with any Peart song. Hell, even Neil doesn't look effortless. Good job.
I'm glad the captains of industry have pulled this one yet... Love the narrated version and the clinic as well. And I do not drum. If I bought a drum kit now, my wife would think I was going through a mid-life crisis and seek help. I'll just watch the videos. (While I can)
Could you do a video on how to do the cross-handed highhat thingy, I've been trying to do it for months and I always mess up as I hit the snare. That was fan-freakin-tastic, great job paul.
I don't know much about drums _ but I know enough to know you kick ass behind that kit. Fun to watch. I've loved Rush for 30 years now and youtube is opening doors that weren't even there 4 years ago. I also enjoyed your tribute to John Rutsey. I cracked a beer after that one myself... great job.
My initial reaction was "who is this disgusting fatbody nerd who will never ever have sex with a female human" which rapidly changed to "who is this drum GOD who perfectly performs my favorite Rush song as a skilled percussionist?" Well done, sir.
Seriously, that was a jerky thing to say and I apologize. I had a few adult beverages and tried to be funny and it came off mean and stupid. But the second half was absolutely true and I mean it. I seriously am working on my drumming just to be able to do what you do (and do easily!) By that I mean, my drum goals are simply to be able to play my favorite Rush songs with a semblance of skill. I have a LONG way to go.
And I don't know what my number is, which probably means I suck.
why don't you speak your mind? lol. Shawn Lane was a fat guitarist and nobody can top the emotive quality of his guitar playing. I don't think weight and musical prowess have a correlation. In any case, well done Pauliewanna. Beautifully executed...what a song.
I just watched your open letter vid to Neal Peart about the copyright issue, and I'd like to know if they're still deleting vids and suspending accountsfor that matter. Thanks in advance for the answer.
Paul...What instructional videos would you recommened for a beginner? I've been banging on a set for a couple years, but nothing serious at all. I just started taking lessons 2 weeks ago, to learn how to read music and get more serious. Thanks for the inspiration..
Paul, i saw this video the other day and was inspired. Thanks for all the work that you're doing. Its appreciated probably more then you know. Keep doing what you're doing.
Playing Peart bascially verbatim on a song that's far from easy is quite a feat. I always like to wonder how big Neil's grin would be if he saw you playing that!
Nope. I"ve never taken a lesson in my life and I didn't start until I was 22. Just a LOT of work in the early years -- I used to play 6 or 7 hours a day on the weekend -- and extreme dedication in the last 5 years to bring my game up to where it is. Dude, what instructional videos? any suggestions. I played drums all throughout Jr High and High School, but that's about the level I stayed at. I would love to be able to play these songs.
You are the BEST!!! You make it look so easy, but we all know how hard that is to do. John Bonham, and Neil Peart... #1 drummers in the world! Please put some more videos up! Thanks for the show!!!!
I also have a narrated version of this where I do a voice-over of everything that is going on in the song. If you want to check that out, it might be even more helpful.
Very good. This is a guy whos gone back and broke down the song and
got the timing down.

That is probably one of the best I have seen for any drummer to play along to any backing track. Well done dude.
