In the film's commentary soundtrack the band members (except for David) all said that they wanted to do this video differently, to make a collage to fit in here, but after seeing the film of David, everybody decided to keep the entire sequence focusing on him and his complete immersion in the song...He became the song in performance,...Now that's entertainment!!
So the first face you see in this video is Bernie Worrell from Parliament/Funkadelic as he starts the keyboard riff to the song. Then the backup singers who face off with Byrne are the "Brides of Funkenstein" from Parliament/Funkadelic. Amazing incarnation of the Heads. I know some people really preferred the more punk, stripped down band (and there's a lot to be said for that), but this had a pretty special thing going for it, too. And of course let's not forget Johnathan Demme's direction.
water flowing underground.all rivers run into the ocean.the moon controls the tide.this man has figured out life.time isnt holding us time isnt controlling us.we are.SAME AS IT EVER WAS
I found out at my school disco that trying to dance like David Byrne only works when your a pop star and not a spotty teenager. An appointment with the mental health school adviser was a little harsh.
Fantastic band. Great song. "Let the days go by. Into the silent water...Same as it ever was." His unique dancing style probably inspired Thom Yorke ten years later.
@shrinkwrap many christians at the time the song came out and saw him perform aid he was making fun of them but David said that it was inspired by that in a way but more so the music "made" him move this way and jerk that way, but YES he DID see preachers and such do these movements and it intrigued him. What do you expect from a logical musician who has at the same time a deep vein of pain and soul. Great music. His solo stuff is beautiful too, more so even. He's got better, not stale at all.
@mediagod2004 Although I understand how people unfamiliar with him may think he's another artsy intellectual elitist, the fact is that David Byrne is not one to ever make fun of anyone, ever. He's a truly humble and respectful person, who genuinely sees the beauty in everything. It's not an act at all either; he's really like that. Just a really decent guy who makes great music and wants to get along with everyone. One of a kind.
@tpaladino You must have misunderstood my meaning to my post. I don't believe him to be making fun of ANYONE. But he says it clearly on Letterman that he saw people in the 'spirit' speaking 'tongues', etc., and it inspired him to incorporate it. He found it intriguing. I do not think he does this from a point of misunderstanding or being mean or judging at all. I just drew a line and commented on how so many people DID think he was making fun of Southern Christians and they are very wrong. TY!
That's the adventure of life. how did we get here?Or is it the tragedy of life, when you didn't realize you were going somewhere? And you wake up when you arrive and realize this is not where I meant to be. I guess they express my fear of average.
"Same as it ever was." Or letting your life get away from you. I either want to control it too much, or I'm afraid of letting life happen to me.
I enjoy the"once in a lifetime" theme. All life should be treated as once in a lifetime.
@drewzillasaurusrex haha but well you know that he is making a black humor joke about the fucking people in religion that manipule the feelings and lifes of a lot people in the world, by example CLUB700 and that shit people!
The good old days, with ya mates who were your buddies for life .... funny how things change but have just recently caught up with them 25 years (cough) down the track and although we are scattered around NZ we are like we never parted.
i'm a black male....I love my R&B, my old school funk, rap ect.......this song is tight work. This song is funky as hell. "same as it ever was!" lol......tight work.
@blasterskv That sucks that you have to pay for You Tube--Here in the west --we just pay for interenet and YT is free. But we have to view dumb commercials.
so amazing and original -- would have been perfect if that guitarist didn't ruin his iconic dance moves/epileptic fit, at 2:03 by jumping into his spotlight and almost hitting him with the neck of the guitar. i wonder if dave got pissed at him.
@emannyc2002 I doubt it, about 4 seconds later you see him kind of smiling while he was singing. I think things like that get ignored when you're in the moment :)
This song is how I feel after I use my paychecks to pay my bills.... when I have a thousand things to do and no time to do any of them! Love this song!!
I swear when my high school class reunites for its 10 year reunion, I'm gonna perform this song as is done in this video. This song is so poignant for that point in people's lives.
@boruff68 The reason he won't reunite the Talking Heads is because he doesn't have to. There are just certain bands that have done more than they could've imagined and they don't need to reunite in order to remind us of that. That's all a reunion would be doing and for true artists like David Byrne, it's unnecessary.
@Burtick2483 It is a valid point. It might not do it justic to bring them back. You cannot live in the past.
But you would have to admit,he is not as big now as he was with the group. The man is a very talented musician. The whole 'Stop making sense" concert is still neat to watch to this day.
What the living fuck...? I clicked "starred items" in Google Reader and this started playing in fullscreen out of thin air. I seriously thought a virus had done its job. Still can't explain.
@PorroFirst It's from Stop Making Sense, a concert movie of the Talking Heads made in 1984. It was notable for being the first to be shot on digital, rather than film. If you're a fan of either the TH or good concert films, I recommend picking up a copy.

"You may ask yourself, 'Well, how did I get here?'"
That can be a sobering question.
This song speaks to everybody. It is danceable music, but it is a profound experience for the listener, too.
The song feels joyous to the listener if he or she has their ducks in a row. (E.G., if he or she is not living passively, 'Letting the days go by.').
The song can be a terrifying, almost, and fascinating experience if it hits the listener as a wake-up call.
As relevant and timeless as Shakespeare.
