Dear everyone: First of all, this was all done in good fun. Second of all, try reading a history book. There was a migration of people from Northern Ireland into Scotland, but the mixture of what is Scottish People living today are descendants of the "Scots" from Ireland, the Picts who were native inhabitants of Scotland, and Vikings who travelled over from Norway.
All Celts are cousins and related, and furthermore we are all human beings so quit your bickering.
The only bad thing is that the jig has to be so fast for the Highland dancer that the Irish dancer doesn't really get to show off any really sophisticated steps. I saw another "dance off" for the reel where it was just the opposite problem--the Scottish music was too slow for the Irish figure dancers!!! So even putting the two styles side-by-side it's hard to really compare them.
@manvericalimpi I agree it's kind of comparing apples to oranges. Point of interest: there has been a trend in Irish dancing where the dancers just want the tunes played faster and faster, whereas Scottish or Cape Breton dancing is done strictly to a very specific tempo, as it has been for hundreds of years. I'm confused as to why the Irish don't just add more fancy footwork if they want even more of a challenge rather than trying to do everything at lightning speed.
Why is every one ranting on about Ireland, England and Scotland? were not that different, after so many years of migration between countries and history im sure were all linked in some way, though everyone forgets about the Welsh.
wow!! love looking at the two different styles! they are really different, but both very fun to watch :)
I'm an Irish dancer, and my group has performed at the Highland Games with the Scottish dancers. they styles are NOTHING alike, so I'm glad these performers didn't try to make everything look similar. GREAT JOB LADIES!!!
@Nick22pr Actually geographically they are pretty close, so saying "not even remotely close" wouldn't be even remotely accurate. Try looking on a map sometime.
@yurismir1 im pretty sure everyone knew exactly what i meant by not even close. as you can see, i wrote that two months ago. it took until now for someone to be troll on it, because everyone else is normal. for some reason you just cant be anything but a trolling douchebag, and its ridiculous. get a life.
@yurismir1 Doesn't matter, England is also 'geographically' close to Scotland, in fact, England are even closer to Scotland than Ireland is, yet you wont point that out for some reason would you?
All of Scotland, England, Wales and even Ireland are all within the geographical area of 'British isles'.
That's unfair. For one thing, the Scottish dance is called "The Irish washerwoman" and it's a kind of pastiche on Irishness. The Scots have more elegant dances than that - and far more difficult ones as well. Also, the Irish dancer is wearing hard shoes, and comparing hard shoes to ghillies is not fair. The Irish dancer should have been dancing in soft shoes for a reasonable comparison. The dances shown are not on the same level of difficulty. Try again.
@mollyfurie The Scottish dancer isn't wearing their normal ghillies as they would in other dances. The Irish (Scottish) jig is they have the wear ghillies with a heel and so is the Irish dancer so it is fair.
@glasgow1234 this dance is actually an old scottish way of sort of...teasing the irish. its not used that way anymore but that was the original purpose of the dance.
Considering really in this form with the hair, make-up and book of kells style dress this irish dance is about 100 years old. Old style Irish dancing was more like the scottish style here or sean truidh which is 300 years old.
Long ago the religious nuts in Ireland deemed arm and body dance movements too provocative and outlawed it. So Irish dancing has no movement above the waist.
@Uuuurk ummm I'm not a man , and I know it is fun to argue but it was just really annoying me the other day because I like both and don't see how one is better than the other.
Does it really matter? Its just what people prefer. Of course if your an irish dancer your going to like the Irish jig better, and if your a highland dancer your going to like the Highland jig better. Neither are easy, so have some appreciation for both.
hehe lol i choose the scottish jig.. but only because i know it hehe :D xx i love i rish dancing too though im thinking about starting a class.. :D xx
The difference is - the "Irish" dancer relies on her tap shoes, the dancing is otherwise rather monotonous with little variety; and the "Scottish" dancer seems to be using the more traditional approach with more variety - using arm movements and more complex body and leg movements! IF YOU DON'T AGREE, WATCH IT AGAIN WITHOUT THE SOUND !!
@theshadow88echo The Irish dance purposely does NOT use arm movements. It is a form of protest when the English took over Irland and forsed them to dance for the pleasure of the crown. They refused to dance, but it came down to "dance or die" they chose life, but secretly danced a "protest" dance by keeping their arms to their sides. A wee bit of history for you and one more reason that I am proud to be Irish...
@TommyMcGuinness actually the church had more of an influence on irish dancing than the english by not wanting people to touch as they danced, but the first clog and stepdances are english as well as sea chanties where both these styles originated.
@theshadow88echo - But it's boring as hell. there's nothing to the steps in the scottish version. it looks like what would be taught to beginner little kids or what might be taught in tap dancing as an "Irish jig".
@Gus313UK Well, I'd go for the Irish dancer any time. And that's not even because I AM one -- I watched both before deciding to take classes and decided Irish dancing was much more interesting and more complex (and there is actually a school nearby, ha ha).
You note that the Irish lass' dance style allows her the benefit of not spilling her Guinness. While the scottish lass can move her arms about as she wants. ;) Both have their merits, neither is better than the other.
Actually, legend has it that the Irish style dates back to the more puritanical times where public dancing was banned, so the Irish developed that style to fool the English into thinking they weren't dancing where in fact they were.
@BlueEyed Queen you are of course entitled to your opinion, I do object to your use of the term 'spazzy' I don't know what part of the world you are from but in Scotland the term is derogitory and descriminatory to people who have a disability, I'm sure that wasn't your intention. I think the girl in the green has used the arms well to present the dance and make it more lively, but as you say everyone is different
@1234dizzydee I'm from the US where the term 'spazzy' is not considered derogitory at all, it means kind of wild and awkward, and is never used to describe a disabled person, at least not by me.
Irish dancing by a county mile, The scotish dancer looks like shes too happy, that dancng scares the crap out of me with all that fake smiling and the dress pulling.
@DoireOrlaith1993 hmmm because the fake hair in Irish isn't scary at all...I'm not saying I don't like Irish dancing, I'm Irish, but calling Scottish dancers on fake smiling is a low blow, some dancers have real smiles & some don't because what we do is HARD. As for the dress pulling and arms..it's supposed to be over the top because we are poking fun at the Irish
@BlueEyedQueen Well thats just my opinion, I dont like that it is quite scary to be fair all that leaping about the place with the arms and all that, Its not my thing. Oh well nice dancing..
Also great job the irish dancer since this is not the beat to any any irish hard shoe she did a fantastic job with making the St.Patricks day fit to that!!!!
im of scottish ancestry and not of irish , but i still feel that the irish jig is a little better, at least when a women is doing it. more feminine imo. both cool none the less

Scotland was founded by the Irish.
Scot is Roman Latin for Irish people.
Not a thing regarded as Scots, kilt (more English) whiskey (Irish) bagpipes (Older in Ireland) was theirs in origin.
