  • I love the fact that Mr. Giesel flat out told every Pro-Life group not to use a line from one of his books. This guy was awesome. :)

  • For people who search for this after watching epic rap battles of history, u r a douche bag.

  • Audrey totally exploited his legacy :(

  • @TheGerogero

Not everything is in her control. Hollywood executives have ways of completely taking properties out of their rightful owners control and having their own way with it. She couldn't possibly keep up with life on set with a film crew or even make it to every board meeting to make sure that Geisel's creations are handled properly. She's done what she can to protect his legacy, and she deserves credit for that. On top of that, she's openly hated just about every movie adaptation.

  • @MutantAnomaly I was mistaken then :D thanks for correcting me.

  • I don't want to get choked up about this but I remember reading Green Eggs and Ham and eating green eggs and ham in 1st grade :') I hope when I graduate high school or university that I might get "The Places You'll Go" :)

  • The guy reading the book at the end sounds like George Castanza from Seinfeld thumps up if you agree

  • Ahh childhood is over. I grew up knowing the awesomeness of tha dr. And I feel lucky.

  • so is he humble? or just strange?

  • where r the rest of um

  • People looked him up because of Epic Rap Battles of History! You won the battle Dr. Seuss! hahaha...

  • does he ever talk

  • beautiful

  • whoa this is freaky i randomly look up Dr. Suess on the exact day of his 10 year anninversary... but other than that i never really acknowledged him for his work now that i look at it he was an amazing person. he should be rememberd in history books in my opinion. his books set more morals for young kids more than some parents

  • what a genuine guy. have alot of respect for him.

  • This was fascinating. It's a marvel to peek inside a genius's mind. His shyness just adds to his mystique. God bless you Dr Suess - thanks for teaching the planet so much.

  • Thumbs up if you believe Dr. Seuss defeated William Shakespeare in an epic rap battle of history.

  • For those asking if ^He can speak. Well duh. He's a person who doesn't like to be in public. Like most people

  • It's wild. Many of the books I read as a kid were written by Dr. Suess. I had never really seen a picture of him until I watched this video. I suppose it was his lack of public exposure that added to the magic behind his books. He wasn't a celebrity, he was a sort of wizard. A wizard he was and oh was he a wizard.

  • Thumbs up if you came here by watching Epic Rap Battles Of History :D

  • "Work speak for himself" Epic rap battles of history :D

  • can dr.seuss actually speak

  • @iraidx Uhh... yeah... maybe?

  • He's checking out his work like "Damn, im badass" lol

  • Dr.suess is the Micheal jackson of childrens books.....will last a lifetime, like MJ he wasn't the first to use that style he learned....but like MJ they both popularized there style and made it world renown...who doesn't like Dr.Suess

  • I have always enjoyed classical poetry but my all time favorite poem to recite is The Glunk That Got Thunk .. the next one in the list is A Fish Out of Water, originally by Dr. Seuss and re-written by his lovely wife. :)

  • Walking behind and standing beside Seuss at 1:07 was Jim Henson, I think.

  • Ok I cried...

    >.<,

  • Pretty much everything aside from the Cat in the Hat film (which was just awful and painfully wrong for such a good book to turn into something so soulless and unfunny) seemed to me to be good at keeping the legacy of Dr. Seuss. I'm not sure about Horton Hears a Who, I never saw it but I heard good things even though I know they expanded on it a great deal.

  • Dr. Seuss, rest in piece in heaven with all of the greats.....

  • 1:00 HAHA,sorry dude, u can't quite pull off the Seuss facial hair.

  • I have EVERY single book written by Dr.Seuss sitting in it's own box in my closet because for Elementary School I was required to read books, and the only books I ever had a joy in reading was by Dr.Seuss.

    R.I.P. Theodor Geisel ; A.K.A. Dr.Suess

  • man....dr.seuss was such a boss. i miss him! he inspired my childhood and still inspires me now :).

  • Oh the places we'll go...

  • Oh, that ending gave we goosebumps...

He was such a great author. Whenever I read one of his books I would think in rhyme for the rest of the day.

  • the animated stories are great, the characters are fabulous, the theme park section is awsome, the grinch was decent, the cat in the hat movie was an anal rape of one of the best dr. seuss stories.

  • infinite apologies to you theodore for the wrecking of your dreams by the beast that bit you. i can hear the turning of your grave, the pounding in your casket, and your spit rains down from heaven on those who profit off of your toils. SHAME ON HOLLYWOOD!! i will never buy one of their toys or cookies or movies that you yourself would never condone. you are a master writer and my favorite artist may you rest in peace for eternity.

  • no audio :(

  • Dr.Seuss What amazing u r.

  • Oh The Places You'll Go has and always will be my favorite

  • Looks like it was time to cash in, huh?

  • He died a month before I was born. I really wish I could have seen him.

  • Dr. Seuss and Jim Henson!!! Forever kings of Imagination :))

  • So SHE'S responsible for these movie horrors they've turned his life's work into!

  • Seuss definitely had the beard look down to a "T".

  • he makes me want to be somebody in this life

  • Mr pisces theodore giesel, You make me so proud to share your sign. The joy and life altering inspiration you have left on this earth makes me realize that I too am capable of such love and adoreation. I hope to be half the greatness you had been!

  • violate his legacy? you turned his masterpieces into exploit pieces of shit, it happens to every artist

Jim Henson, Chuck Jones, Peyote and George Lucas will get his clouds of crap even more then now after he passes welcome to America

  • @spiderjonze >>> Chuck Jones, I wouldn't put him in that scenario. He collaborated with Seuss moreso and tried to put his own input in the shows.

  • @83phatman i meant as in how people try to exploit artists work after they die, ex pointless merchandise. Nothing against any of the artists just the people how look after their legacys

  • wow he was amazing

  • Brian you DID contribute to his legacy.

    Thanks alot!

  • Interesting to hear the facts, but these History Channel docs are hideous -- really sucks that such a unique and clever creative person had his story packed into this one-style-fits-all format.

It looks like it was released during the Cat in the Hat film release. His second wife really did drop the ball. Those books didn't need o be turned into bad peiod-piece live action films, or advertisements for cookies to stay popular. People share his books with their children regardless.

  • @crock703 Audrey eventually forbade any more live-action adaptations of dr. seuss's work, due to the reception of the Grinch and Cat in the Hat movies.

  • lol oblivion isn't a direction silly

  • Thanks for posting.

  • There ought to be a DVD about this. I've learned so much about him, even though some of his books weren't mentioned.

  • Wonderful doc, thanks for adding! My earliest memories of reading are of his books, and I think his open-ended creativity contributed to my imagination, and my love of creating today. Although I must admit, I do not like green eggs and ham. I much prefer bacon.

  • i never had the luck of reading these as a kid. Since i live in the netherlands, they only had dutch stuff. It was not translated since i know. But i have come to learn about seuss' work. And as i see, thise cat int he hat movie really took away the magic that made the books and old cartoons so genius. As i have a dream to write a children's book myself, dr seus will always be an example and hero to me. thankyou for uploading this :) Most inspiring documentary !!

  • What part of "dead" did little Dane not understand when he asked for a responce?

I take is Geisel's view on merchandising was almost on par with the Calvin & Hobbes guy?

  • Yeah, you really just cheapen the characters w/ that overexposure, and undermine their longevity.

A story breathes life into the characters. Out of that context, they stop being interesting. How does a cartoon on a cookie box advance the "personality" of the character.

His second wife doesn't get it.

  • 6:35 Ted would have needed to buy another pool for the amount of new pool floaties if he was alive. How dare they take advantage of him... :(

  • thats life if it makes money greedy corporates will do things against a creators wish I'm scared once i finish my story it may end up like this

  • Dear TearToTheReeDeeOol, I mean no disrespect, as you obviously have strong feelings for Dr. Seuss, but I fail to see how attacking his widow will do him much good. I myself do not like most of the commercialization of his characters that has become the norm in recent years, but in the same breath believe that personal attacks are not justified, nor are they productive. I am sure he loved his wife and would probably be more disturbed by the label of "ho-biscuit" that you have bestowed on her.

  • There will never be another like him!!!

  • I felt sad when I watched this video describe his last moments.

And I felt even sadder and more morose still, when I saw the subsequent marketing and destruction of his legacy by the hideous, monstrous, soulless Hollywood machine.

He led a great life and made millions of people, old and young happy and put their minds so full of wonder.

And some of them have grown up to make films, merchandise his characters and desecrate his legacy.

Please, just remember the man and the joy he brought many.

  • Dr Seuss was a genius, a visionary and a very creative man, who brought smiles to countless millions with his imagination.

Please remember his legacy and respect it, everyone. This goes to those in the film industry.

These are the books YOU grew up with. Please don't ruin or trivialize them with these remakes and films done in such poor taste.

  • yes I agree that there is a lot of marketing, but I know I wear my Fox in Socks T-shirt with pride.

  • I agree especially the cat in the hat adding horrible adult jokes like meyers when he was the cat in the hat stare at the picture of the kids mom like a playboy

  • I started sobbing when the lines of Oh the Places You'll Go were being read. It reminds me of all the times it has been read to me in school at the end of the year, our teachers were always encouraging us to live out our lives, and it just makes me think how lucky I am to still be young and still have a whole world of decisions in front of me.

  • thank you for posting this. dr seuss (theodore geisel) was one of my favorite authors when I was a kid (he still is) and inspired my imagination greatly! I've always dreamed of liiustrating kids books, and I am currently working on one for a local woman that I hope is successful. I also think he inspired to always be a kid at heart, and I certainly am! I have a cast of characters in some paintings i've done that I would like to publish and animate someday. again thank you for posting this!

  • thanks.

    AMAZING MAN!

BUT he would of, in my opinion, HATED all the movies, etc that came after his death.... MY GAWD! they were awful.

  • I agree.

He would have been so upset to see what has become of his legacy today with these awful AWFUL movies. *sigh*

  • A great man Theodore Geisel or better known as Dr Seuss. R.I.P. Why do good things happen to good people?

  • because we're mortal. he lived a long productive life that inspired others (including me) death is part of life and inevitable for all of us. what we do with the years we have is what's important.

  • Really great. I enjoyed watching this!

  • Thank you so much for putting this up. Dr Seuss is my most favorite author of all time. And he's just like me; my parents encouraged me to draw, and i'm trying to get my own children's book seriers published. Where can I buy this? Could you tell me please?

  • Sorry, I can't help you. I don't have a copy anymore, and this wasn't from a DVD but had been screened on cable. I suggest trying to download and save it from youtube, that's all I can think of. Thanks for watching.

  • @jeffacosta123 You should look on A&E's site or maybe even the History Channel's website.

  • Aww... yes thanks for putting this on here. I've always loved his books :-).

  • Hey thanks for uploading this. I really enjoyed it.
