Both of their voices are absolutely magnificent, but I feel like she has no idea what words she's singing. Hvorostovsky is next to her trying to play a part and she's just singing (albeit beautifully) out to the audience.
@Konoakapen What a stupid phrase "she has no idea what words she's singing" ! At that level they know what they are singing.............................
As opposed to accents that other performers bring to the stage? To a native speaker, even Rolando would stick out when he's singing in...whatever language. People used to complain about Joan Sutherland, but she still became known as La Stupenda because of the quality of her singing, not her diction/intonation...or do you just dislike anything American?
Guys, let the people sing like THEY want, not in Mozarts taste! Each human is individuell and has his own understanding of music and the audience decides, which she/he likes the most for his own opinion !
@tagoreee I agree! I love her voice to death, and she usually suits Verdi and Strauss rep. pretty well, but Mozart should NOT be scoopy. Hvorostovsky has a brilliant voice. I have a recording of him in a Rimsky-Korsakov opera, and I LOVE him.
@saxamaphoneguy1 I love that everyone says this. Who says you can't scoop a little in Mozart? I mean seriously, where is the manual in which it says "THIS is how you sing Mozart and this is how NOT to sing Mozart"? Does anyone really know exactly how singers of the 18th century sang every note? Who is the authority on this? Everyone automatically thinks "Mozart = THIS way" but just where do we get the authority to say that? Just a thought... If u have the answer, I'm genuinely curious...
@OperaLover84 You have a fair argument, but it's the historians, musicologists, and performers for the last several centuries that would probably agree. I would of course not mind portamenti from time to time, but Renee's "signature" scooping gets to the point of overkill sometimes (as beautiful as her singing is). Classical era music is known for a style distinguished by clean phrasing and the thought of "logic over emotion"..I would kill to sing like Renee though, I meant no offense whatsoever
@ Operalover Interesting question. I don't think it's necessarily a question of 'automaticity', nor of leaning on some historical authority. To me at least, it is a matter of personally interpreting the music as written down, by asking the question "which style would bring the most beauty, meaning and/or expressivity out of this piece?" How we answer this may change from age to age. But that doesn't make it entirely
@OperaLover84 (continued) ...arbitrary. The answer depends on all the other music surrounding us which together makes up a language that we use both when listening and when singing ourselves...
I think this is a great performance of Don Giovanni. Fleming was great and I think any liberties she took were beneficial to the scene.
Check out lonestaropera . com and see the performers of Fort Worth's Don Giovanni performance behind the scenes and how they feel about such liberties.
I have to agree with you and her pronunciation tends to get off also ( as in "forte", when she inserts an "a" making it "farte"- if you watch her mouth, it's clear that she is taking liberties with more than just the tempi or acting).
OMG! Fleming CLEARLY stole the show in this performance! I mean what more could you want from Zerlina!!! I still love you Hvorostovsky but damn, he could have pulled off better pianissimi!
Niby wszystko jest nawyższych lotów, Fleming, Hworostowski =mistrzostwo świata bez dwóch zdań. A jednak...., brakuje mi w tej scenie aktorstwa, to jest duet miłosny! Wystarczy porównać Bartoli i Terfla, różnica zasadnicza.
Hvorostovsky, according to my opinion, has a beautiful voice, his figure is elegant and very pleasant, but I invite you to lsten to an unknown baritone named gabriele settembrini whose version of La ci darem la mano is much better and this man looks close to 70 years old.How did he sing when he was young? By the way is there anybody who can give me some information about him?
I totally respect the people who say that Hvorostovsky is the best barytone alive but for me he lacks a lillte bit lightness and his white hair and dark eyebrows make him look more like Dracula than Don Giovanni (Ok this has nothing to do with the perfoemance)I prefer from far Keenlyside
I feel that Hvorostovsky's true fault is his inability to achieve a true mezzo voce. When he attempts it, although open and free, the tone is a little cloudy for my tastes.
Again... sad that I even have to say this, but I mean no offense to anyone. I'm just stating my opinion on his voice. He is phenomenal none the less and this video is fantastic.
He is a true Verdi baritone. His voice does seem a little out of place for this lyric bel canto style, through no fault of his own. Needless to say, it is still beautiful, legato, and free. If I could accomplish a small fraction of what he has, I will be happy.
It's beautiful, but I feel like both of them are too big for the role. They both sound like they are singing a romantic, rather than classical composition. But it's gorgeous, just not the seduction scene I imagine.
For two such attractive people they really are lacking in chemistry. It seems like Renee Fleming has chemistry with everyone and everything but him . . . I will have to watch them together in other operas, but I find this disappointing :(
I have the DVD of them together at the Met...Sublime is the best word to describe them there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They have amazing chemistry, their voices blend, and they are both perfect for their parts. I just don't like this because Fleming was not cut out to be a Zerlina. (In fact, I'd almost say Hvorostovsky wasn't a Don Giovanni...but I think many would disagree with me. I prefer Sir Thomas Allen!)
I agree with you a propos Sir Allen being the best; not any of the other Dons here on youtube no matter how good they sound, are even in the same category, in my opinion, and I'm not a fan of his.
I agree! There performance in the MEt was wonderful. In this video, something went wrong. One never knows, if one of them was not feeling well or something. When people have problems, it effects there performance.
I love Dmitri Hvorostovsky's voice!!! It's so low and rich... I would TOTALLY be seduced if he was singing this to me!!! And even though I think that Renee Fleming's voice is better suited to one of the Donnas in this opera timbre-wise (she says in her autobiography she's played all three female leads in "Don Giovanni"), I love her and think she's fantastic in whatever she decides to do!
Their rythm is quite unusual. They didn't start too promising but they really get better during the song. Isn't the female part of this duet meant to be sang by a mezzosoprano by the way?
The female part of the duet is sung by Zerlina, which is typically a soubrette/light lyric role. La Renee is a full lyric, but I could never refuse her any role she desired to sing (at least, in concert!)
renee really has the most unique soprano voice i've ever heard. and that is SO refreshing because all too often everyone sounds just like the next person. but she breaks so many molds with many of her stylistic nuances and with her instrument in general. i LOVE it.
I love Renee...really I do. She is exquisitely talented and has a wonderful craft. But the girl has a tendency to overact that SOMETIMES works, and here it doesn't.
let us be nice...renee is making the big bucks off of her gift. let us rejoice in music making and not be those musicians who tear down the walls of greatness. besides, renee is in my vocal lineage! :)
Dmitri's voice is beautiful and nuanced and his delivery here is so varied and expressive. He can be tender and soft or else powerful and dramatic - not to mention he's awfully handsome, a real charmer - I bet he could be a terrific actor if he wished.
Yes, Renee usually does this (annoying) stylistic attack where she makes the beginning of notes hooty and breathy...so yes, the onset was a bad Fleming-ism but the note itself that follows is perfecto!
However I am most annoyed by her dragging notes up in an ill-adviced legato. It is not "vorre-e+i", "sare-e+i". It's "vorre-i" or "sare-i". She is too intelligent for such cheap singing. Come on Renee you should know your Mozart by now.
Just one of those pieces that make me gasp at the sheer genius of Mozart - this sounds so utterly perfect and effortless; brilliant writing for the human voice.
Hvorostovsky has to have the finest baritone voice of his generation, but when I saw him do the Don in New York he dogged it for most of the show. When he really felt like singing it was incredible, but that was so rare. Is this a common complaint with his live singing?
Well I'm a diplomat by nature and I think that Hvorostovsky and Terfel are excellent each in their own way. Renée Fleming is a great soprano et Cecila Bartoli is a great Mezzo-soprano ! Don't play, for God's sake, this game like in the fifties or sixties where there was the rivality of Renata Tebaldi versus Maria Callas. It's sad to praise one singer and reject another : There is simply a lot of good singers today ! So please, just enjoy !!!!
Hvorostovsky and Flemming definitely out-perform Terfel and Bartolli in this duet. Bartoli slows down the tempo at every entry; maybe she's paid by the minute.
do you actually know anything about Renee Fleming...if yu did you would know that she studied the role of Zerlina as well as the other soprano roles in Don Gio - so she infact isnt influenced or copyin Bartoli
your point being? the fact that she studied the role doesn't mean she couldn't have been influenced... of course not when she studied it, but later... opera interpretations are bound to be influenced by other references, one way or the other.
This clip is the perfect example of what drives me crazy about Dmitri. He has an incomperably beautiful instrument (sorry Terfel lovers, Dmitri's is better) but he only uses half it of the time. I saw him do Giovanni a few years ago at the Met and it was endlessly frustrating. When he felt like singing it was glorious, but downright vocally boring otherwise.
love them together. love the duet. and i LOVE how renee gets right into it and looks at dmitri like "oh, please, u flatter me!" its so cute! singing is simply beautiful
this is incredible!!!

renee really has the most unique soprano voice i've ever heard. and that is SO refreshing because all too often everyone sounds just like the next person. but she breaks so many molds with many of her stylistic nuances and with her instrument in general. i LOVE it.
tiernan87 4 years ago
I agree. I LOVE her.

I love Renee...really I do. She is exquisitely talented and has a wonderful craft. But the girl has a tendency to overact that SOMETIMES works, and here it doesn't.
KatherineXIX 4 years ago 3
I would think that to an audience spread throughout a gigantic hall wouldn't perceive that as overacting.
jpruittj 4 years ago
let us be nice...renee is making the big bucks off of her gift. let us rejoice in music making and not be those musicians who tear down the walls of greatness. besides, renee is in my vocal lineage! :)

Dmitri's voice is beautiful and nuanced and his delivery here is so varied and expressive. He can be tender and soft or else powerful and dramatic - not to mention he's awfully handsome, a real charmer - I bet he could be a terrific actor if he wished.
Many tx to the poster of this video.

hvorostovsky always looks so sneaky when he does this aria. it's great.

I like Dmitri's voice.

great deep baritone voice
pablosilvam 4 years ago 2
Not deep at all. Dark and rich, but not "deep". Actually a dark, lightweight, lyric. That is not a negative criticism but an accurate description.

Yes, that note at 2:35 is PERFECT, free singing! Brava!
CHerbek 4 years ago
Really??? The onset is pretty tense sounding... Hhhhandiam? I can't say anything though, I can't stand her voice so I'm not a good judge.
thebananamonkey 4 years ago
Yes, Renee usually does this (annoying) stylistic attack where she makes the beginning of notes hooty and breathy...so yes, the onset was a bad Fleming-ism but the note itself that follows is perfecto!
CHerbek 4 years ago
However I am most annoyed by her dragging notes up in an ill-adviced legato. It is not "vorre-e+i", "sare-e+i". It's "vorre-i" or "sare-i". She is too intelligent for such cheap singing. Come on Renee you should know your Mozart by now.

i love renee's tone. It has this soulful ring to it. Its so beautiful.

Is this a common complaint with his live singing?

i don't know I'm seeing him in two weeks so i'll let you know

How old is Mr Hvrostovky ? He looked quite old in his "passione" something album and quite young and handsome here.

Dmitri, Terfel, Hampson too, all great. Yes Dmitri does seem to be gaining an edge. Nice though, all the differing nuances, matices de interpretacion

Renee Fleming was... dissapointing to say the least. Too much deviance. Dmitri Hvorostovsky was perfect.
rapiant 4 years ago
Well I'm a diplomat by nature and I think that Hvorostovsky and Terfel are excellent each in their own way. Renée Fleming is a great soprano et Cecila Bartoli is a great Mezzo-soprano ! Don't play, for God's sake, this game like in the fifties or sixties where there was the rivality of Renata Tebaldi versus Maria Callas. It's sad to praise one singer and reject another : There is simply a lot of good singers today ! So please, just enjoy !!!!
Pierrot4363 4 years ago 5
Hvorostovsky and Flemming definitely out-perform Terfel and Bartolli in this duet. Bartoli slows down the tempo at every entry; maybe she's paid by the minute.
jayboytheplayboy 4 years ago
say what??
Barotli feels what she's singing. What Flemming did here was soooo influenced by her.
Cenayon 4 years ago
do you actually know anything about Renee Fleming...if yu did you would know that she studied the role of Zerlina as well as the other soprano roles in Don Gio - so she infact isnt influenced or copyin Bartoli
primadivo 4 years ago
your point being? the fact that she studied the role doesn't mean she couldn't have been influenced... of course not when she studied it, but later... opera interpretations are bound to be influenced by other references, one way or the other.
Cenayon 4 years ago
This clip is the perfect example of what drives me crazy about Dmitri. He has an incomperably beautiful instrument (sorry Terfel lovers, Dmitri's is better) but he only uses half it of the time. I saw him do Giovanni a few years ago at the Met and it was endlessly frustrating. When he felt like singing it was glorious, but downright vocally boring otherwise.
tomtallis 4 years ago
Terfel and Bartolli... that's all I have to say.
Levedad247 4 years ago 4
i concur...this is ok, but the terfel-bartoli is absolutely incomparable

This duet is very beautiful...I love Mozart and hope to hear Don Gionanni in Wiener Staatsoper. It is my dream!

She seems to really cut his lines short, I hope that's her intention and not her Diva showing.
tararep 5 years ago
Um...Have you EVER heard this duet before? That is how it's supposed to sound. I know. I've performed this duet before.
Perhaps you should know what you're talking about before attempting to call someone a Diva.
