Heard her live a few times, probably one of the most beautiful instruments in the 20th century.. like spun silver live.. recordings don't do her justice...
I am a Callas fanatic to the bitter end, but Kiri's performances of Vissi D'Arte are beautiful, powerful (sometimes too powerful) but without a doubt on par with Callas...feel the goosebumps!
I guess tradition might have made conductors used to let the monkey out of the cage a bit too often, like so often the case with Wagner (?) but also...it takes time to get accuainted to the different demands of of the repertoire...it took Placido a few years to make Wagner sound right...different stylistic approaches
I like the way she plays the part, it seems more intelligent than some other interpretations1 She portrays her as a beautiful/flawed character, which I think is interesting and brave! An it is sung beautifully and listen to the ovation!

Absolutely beautiful! Lyrical, dramatic but controlled. This is a sublime performance and a wonderful interpretation. My favourite by a country mile.

She feels sort of more like the countess in character, even here

Would be interesting to know if it actually carried throughout the role

I agree with the last poster. I have never heard Kiri perform anything I didn't absolitely love! This is no exception.

I don't know why people get so upset when singers step "outside" of their specialty roles and sound good in others. I thought this was wonderful.

Hello.
I have a sneaking suspicion that the good
Baron is the Swedish baritone Ingvar Wixell.
It looks like him and he has the same lean
Scandinavian sound.
Hope this helps.

Te Kanawa had a lovely voice and sang very well but Tosca was not the role for her.
