Having seen your newer vids, I just ran across this. Interesting to see the progress and change in your delivery, Mr Nutn! The old way is as good as new - just different. Heckuva beautiful blade, esp at its 2.2 weight.
Love your reviews nutnfance, and have made a few purchases based on them. Usually satisfied, and have a couple of great benchmades also. However, I must say this one-- the 960 osborne---- SUX!! The grip is super slipery, has sharp corners and is very uncomfortable to wield, even for a short time. I cut up a bunch of boxes with it, and it was painful. Still love ya nut, but this one is a stinker! Of course, as you say, YMMV.
@EricWaterTruck It should not be $50. If you had one you'd understand. It's very, very well made. Lock up is tight, blade aligned, steel gets very sharp, and it's all around undoubtedly beautiful.
When I bought mine I couldn't believe how well it is constructed.
I got one from ebay (seller said it was new, but it was not...surprise) This is not a homerun for me, the 940, 943 is lightyears better then the 960...in my view.
These knives are getting really scarce! I'm just now tuning in to NUTNFANCY, & I credit this vid with the latest sale of their 960-RED--mine! Awesome knife, BUT, my D2 blade came with a very steep grind, not sharp at all. So I will be looking for a professional sharpener (human variety).
I have a Benchmade and have used there life sharp warranty. I work construction and that knife had been put though its paces in terms of abuse and exposure to dust and dirt. Sharpening was so-so but there complimentary rebuild and cleaning was awesome. They repacked the bearings and cleaned all the stains out of the handle and adjusted the assisted opening and locking mechanisms to like new!
I had a look at this knife. It's very "flat" (side to side) and does not feel at all comfortable in my hand at least. I prefer the more rounded cross-section of the 940 series or the Kulgera (love that one, just bought one two days ago).
Pretty damn sweet. I'm trying to find a silver one online right now. Looks like right in the neighborhood of 125-135 bucks.
Of course my all time favs as far as BM goes would be the 440 Opportunist and the 480 Shoki (beauty), but to me those are more novelty knives and the 960 is more of a EDC/self defense knife. What I'm trying to say is that I think I am going to get all three.
Well, after seeing the review many times, I went and placed an order for one. This is the most I've spent on a knife and it will be one heck of a father's day gift for myself.
I cant help myself, Benchmade knives are simply overpriced. I know its a lot for the price, but pay so much for a folder... thats just a no go for me.
cameronmeikle---just becuz he says he can use it for thrust cuts in a defensive situation doesn't mean he has, he saying if u NEED it in a life threatening situation, it can be used to do a thrust attack...
I just received mine from BladeHQ today. Great price and great service from that place. I'm not really a blade guy but this thing feels like solid quality. I'd prefer the G10 to have a little more traction, but it still deploys quickly either by flicking the thumb stud or with a firm snap of the wrist. Arrives very sharp out of the box, too.
Dosbomber, I just spent the week in Kentucky and I have to say that it's a wonderful knife for EDC and basic utility. I did everything from sharpen a long stick for campfire smores/hot dogs to have my friend cut my 6-7 inch long hair to about 1 inch in length. I couldn't believe how sharp it was and how easily it cut my hair. My only gripe is that it isn't as razor sharp anymore. Some parts can cut paper and some can't. Maybe the D2 steel just doesn't hold an edge as well as other steel?
I'm new to knives so my claims are very ignorant. Should I expect this knife to still be as sharp as the day I got it? I didn't really use it as much as you'd think. Maybe cutting my think hair did it in :p
I do have to say that it is still really sharp and very, very usable but just not as sharp as out of the box.
I can't believe mine is 2 years old already. Still solid, still without any problems, although the D2 steel needs resharpening fairly regularly. I love the axis lock, and probably will never buy another blade that doesn't have it.
After watching your review I literally searched google for a good deal on one and closed my eyes as I pressed "submit order" on the Blade HQ website. $130 seems like a good deal and I couldnt pass it up.
Beautiful knife, high quality too. Would I buy it? No. In his own jargon, it's not a high-value knife. It's way too expensive. And it's too small, I like at least a BIT of defensive capability on a folder.
i nutnfancy i am a massive fan of all your videos especially benchmade ones (very informative) would it be possible if you could do a reveiew on the benchmade 770 Osborn would be much appreciated.... thx
nutnfancy, i love your vids, hehe, i live in the uk so i just watch them for entertainment =) dude keep up the awsome work bro lol, you should have a job doing this, hope you read this byee
i just got my 960 in silver and I love it. I did have to put some loctite in the pivot because the screw kept backing out and giving bad blade play, but once it fixed it its perfect, Thanks for the great review!
@SUFFOCATIONFAN haha most of the knifes he reviews are a bit pricy but you get what you pay for... spiderco knifes are outragous... i fell in love with that spiderco civilian and when i went to the spiderco sight to order one it was around 500 bucks...
I was so excited about this knife till I held one - I agree, it's superlight, great ergos, and quite solid. But it's just WAY too small for my hands! I was bummed!
Do you have a review of the 930 Kulgera? That's what i've decided I really want out of the BM line, but haven't been able to hold one in the hand because my local shop doesn't have any!
ive got a kulgera and i abosolutely love it. it really blurs the line between edc and tactical. heres some observations
weight: 3.2 for mine bm site says 3 but its a pretty big knife so it feels incredibly light especially when open
blade: identical to the 960 except larger, plenty of belly. it says 3.6 in on bm website but it looks/feels more like 3 3/4, and its slightly thicker than the 940
handle: the g10 is so sweet but very smooth and not any more grippy than an aluminum handle.
the pins are all mosaic like the 960s pivot which looks sweet and thumstud matches as well. the stud, axis, pivot, pins, liners, spacers, and clip are all a classy shiny dark gray that doesnt scratch easily but the clip will after time. in places the liners protrude from the g10 which looks cool. the handle is a thicker and less compact than the 940 but feels better in hand. flow thu design with 2 pins and no spacer. no gimping. opens a bit faster than the 940 and has a nicer clack sound
You said here the D2 is a somewhat brittle steel compared to 154CM, what do you think of 154 compared to steels like vg-10 and s30v. I see some people say 154cm is brittle compared to the above mentioned steels, just wondering your opinions on VG-10 and s30v. Thanks for all the great reviews too.
i have a d2 672 benchmade and i dropped it on the tip and it broke off. i also have a 3550 benchmade and it is made of 154cm and ive dropped it a thousand times on the tip and side and all that happend was it got a little scratced
Hey nutin, I'm one of your subscribers... I got a question for you. I found a place that'll sell me this knife, the BM960 Red or Silver for $135, that sounds like a good price... What is your thought on that?
when you look in between the scales, where the blade goes, does it look like the screw closest to the pocket clip has sort of cut or torn through the aluminum, because thats what mine looks like. and it stands out too because all the rest of the knife is so perfecly made. nice review
Thanks nutnfancy for the review, after watching your video, I went to impact gun's site and saw they had it on sale and picked one up. Keep up the awesome reviews.
Good reviews as always, I got my hands on one of those beautiful little Benchmade 480's, and the lock sucked. It downright fails under very little pressure. But Benchmade is such a good company that they are letting me exchange for a different model, and I'm getting this 960 because of this review. Thanks!
im sure you know but the axis lock knives dont use detents. it is just the spring tension from that lock. love your vids and glad you chose this knive to review
yo man i luv your vids and all of your spydercos but i dint know you spoke inglish man it would be so cool if you could do a full collection vid. and to the vid the carbonfiber ones are limited edition
very nice review as usual, I just did a review (not up yet) on a BM923 swithcback in all black, but it made me think of you and I had to mention you in the video, lol because your getting a 3.4" blade as well as a a small maybe 1.5" backup blade all in a 2.9 ounce package! Unfortunatly discontinued though...
Excellent knife, and review as well... I came oh so close to getting this one myself but I opted for the 930 Kulgera instead, same level of quality and the knife is a tad larger and a bit less expensive.. I'm happy with it, but may add this one to my collection as well.
Wonderful review. Thanks nutnfancy and impact. Pretty cool working together like that. Can you believe I have yet to own a benchmade. I know, I know. May be soon. Like you mention, price is not too cheap. Love the high value knives. The 940 in green handle reverse tanto is calling to me. May be in the next couple months. A2 wilderness knife is on the short list. Lookin for one in Kydex. Though to find. Thanks again for your review. Jet over and out
thank you so much! i have been hoping some one would put up a review of a benchmade 960 for some time now. great review and i heard D2 is a good edc steel because it can get very very sharp and holds an edge for a long time.
Oh and I should add my ugly comment refers to the blade, the handle is amazing, one of the best benchmade makes. and I agree, benchmade should go back to 154cm.
I would take a Bradley over a Benchmade Osborne any day.

Premium steels brake easily. I'e had s30v, d2, ATS-34 and n690 knives. They all were brittle compared to cheap steel blades.
If you have high RC, you get brittle blade.
ovDarkness 3 years ago
To a certain extent what you've said is true. Some carbon steels can work at 60ish RC with a softer quenched spine/ laminated, ie Ao Gami/ O1.
Chipping might still occur on cpm steels, but you might look at Kershaw's 'Supersteel Leek'in laminated cpm D-2.
sc00ny 3 years ago
i had s30v blades chiped a few times, never 154cm.

ATS-34 is just like 154cm n690co is just 440c with cobalt, those (i think) are not premium steels.

thank you so much! i have been hoping some one would put up a review of a benchmade 960 for some time now. great review and i heard D2 is a good edc steel because it can get very very sharp and holds an edge for a long time.

Oh and I should add my ugly comment refers to the blade, the handle is amazing, one of the best benchmade makes. and I agree, benchmade should go back to 154cm.

the news from benchmade is disapointing, but Im sure they will come around to you once they figure out how much you help them move units.
btw, nice knife, but it is really overpriced, and its ugly as sin.
