I dont think this guy has been in the french foriegn legion as he never shown any of his photos. You would think if he was the real deal he would a least show a video or photos. Any preson can do some chin ups with a shirt off. Most people that have been there would not sit in front of the camera unless it was a documentary officially or at least with uniform on french foriegn legion base unofficially. Doing to the chin ups at the age fourty is pretty poor efort for a ex legion.

Quit training on Chin Ups! You'll always be able to do more under, than over hand. Always train overhand and the underhand will take care of itself. Also, do it after a run!

good idea is to do pullups right after run, thats the way you do it in selection, depending on how hard you try in running you might be capable of doing only 50% of your norm, though dont waste to much time tryng to get your body in shape, just enough to pass tests, heres what probaly get you pass: peep lvl 8, 8 pullups and climb rope 1 time
Take note ALL potential candidates. It makes a hell of a difference climbing a rope/pull ups AFTER a run. Talk about arms of jelly!!!! 5 star comment vendla. Thanks for your input!

@HerroHerrar Get a spotter. Have your spotter hold your feet on his chest while you are on a pull up bar in base position so that you can assist your pull up with your legs when needed, do as many as you can for about two weeks, then, you should be able to do a few pull ups without a spotter. Now, begin doing several sets of your max number of reps once every day. after only a week or two of this, you should be able to do ten pull ups easy.
@infantrypfc - A spotter or partner to workout with, is a good idea on a number of levels (motivation, form or correct execution of exercise, pause between reps etc...)
Though do be careful not to push with your legs against the spotter. This is an arm/ shoulder/ back exercise. Isolate or focus on these muscles in your mind during the pull up.
If you are on your own though, use a chair and start in the "Up" position. Hold for as long as possible, SLOWLY descending, and repeat.

However, I think that 10 is a fair and reasonable achievement. I once read in Men's Health (I believe), that... "If you can do 10, you can consider yourself a strong guy!". Well, pull ups alone "maketh not a strong man!"....but 10 is a good number!
@Oster910 - You make my point exactly. At 16 you SHOULD find 10 easy, but trust me, at 40 things get a little harder. Kudos to you for keeping your life in balance. Keep it up!!!
i do 10 with 20 kg additional weight on my body, this is the best way to train yourself. try it, add some kg more every week and try to do 10 - 12 lift-ups and lifting up your own weight 20 times is not a problem anymore.

I personally stay away from weights, for fear of injury. I'm always looking for ways to exercise with just my bodyweight and gravity. Though I believe your method to be very effective.
@hugglebear69 hey, i put the weight to a special belt that i wear. either one you get in a gym, those that are used by professionals or a simple leather belt with an additional rope or something (creativity is the key ;) )
your training philosophy is probably the most healthy, as you can't fry your cns. it always depends on the aim you've got. if you wan't to get real strong (like 220 lbs benchpress and stuff) there's no other option :) muscle growth is rather caused by big weight than many reps

If we wanted to eat we had to do 10, If we couldn't we had to run round the parade ground...then do it again....and again.... Then if we failed they kept us in the dark and fed us pins... They made us eat bricks!! Sometimes we had to climb a rope instead.
Common reasons for disqual. - 1. Criminal history. If you stole something, prob. no big deal! If you killed someone, very big deal! 2. Heavy drugs, no go!!! 3. Failed fitness/ psychological evaluation. (Srange 'cause they're mostly crazy fuckers anyway)
Security Questions - Specific questions I cannot remember, but they ask you to recount your life history, and then they ask you to do it again, and again etc... Any discrepancies will be noted and jumped on!!!
Training Failure! - No-one that I knew "Failed" training, I'm not sure that you can! If you just stick with it, you're in!!! However, many run away (Desert), Others are injured and are Med. discharged.

by what measure is serving ten with the RM considered a failure? As you might of worked out from other posts, fitness tests in the FFL are a bit lame and their idea of soldiering is just not up to the mark of what a some people expect. if its to easy whats the point?.
I am sorry but I must disagree with Arcane1Soldier. A healthly lifestyle i.e. eating heathly, working out, working out smarter by utilizing good running shoes etc, listening to your body and having the attitude and heart of a champion will take you along way.
At 47 (old man that I am) I can run a 10k in 46:00 min flat, bang out 20 dead hang pull ups and do MMA 2-3 time a week.
i'm only 19 and i know that. just look at bernard hopkins, shane mosley. one decides when one becomes old, i think. hopefully i can keep that outlook for awhile.
Lie about the shoulder if its not a problem. You can apply up to the age of 40. Thats not to say they wont reject you because you're too old. Most guys who apply are young.

im not that good at pull ups, but I can do situps until I get bored and pushups, I wouldnt know how many now... but all the ramassage I got in castel back then I could do around 118 119 as I was nearly always down en position (or corvée de chiot xD ).. now I could probably do 60 or 70 if I really tried hard and break a sweat.
When i was your age at 16, i to could do shit load of sit ups and push ups and pull/chin ups, but guess what. Wait till you get to my age of 25 and than see how well you do. Trust me, the more you age and older you get, no matter what, the less you can do with pull ups/chin ups especially
Not true, and allrangefighter is correct. If you maintain your fitness level as you age, your strength does not subside. At 43, I'm fitter than most men in their 20's.
There might be a chance you could join up with the mild asthma if you be up front with them and ask to take the trials to show how well you can do and if you do good enough, they may take you, but you might not be in Infantry role, but maybe a Admin Guy or Driver. Thats my guess.
You can easily buy replacement kepis at the foyer, which is the Legion shop on base! They get old and sweaty, and though you can wash them, it's sometimes just easier to buy a new one. Especially if there is an asshole at the "Post de sécurité" or guardroom.
Though I really wouldn't recommend losing it in the first place, you've got to get back into camp somehow! Without a Kepi on your head..... You're screwed!!!
when i got to the legion i ouldnt do one of those. spent a week hanging out in the excercie yard during selection and could do 4 but failed the run. that sucked donkey balls

....... For those that can't do one overhand pull up. Get a chair, stand on it and then hold your chin above the bar as long as you can, repeat 6 times. Do this for a month, then see how many regular pullups you can do.
Always warm up, drink plenty of water and adapt as necessary. Most people can do way more situps than any other exercise, so the 6x6 rule doesn't apply.
NOTE! Don't be ashamed if you CAN'T do it... Be ashamed if you DON'T do it. Nothin' wrong with tryin' your best!!!

good idea is to do pullups right after run, thats the way you do it in selection, depending on how hard you try in running you might be capable of doing only 50% of your norm, though dont waste to much time tryng to get your body in shape, just enough to pass tests, heres what probaly get you pass: peep lvl 8, 8 pullups and climb rope 1 time

Have your spotter hold your feet on his chest while you are on a pull up bar in base position so that you can assist your pull up with your legs when needed, do as many as you can for about two weeks, then, you should be able to do a few pull ups without a spotter. Now, begin doing several sets of your max number of reps once every day. after only a week or two of this, you should be able to do ten pull ups easy.

@infantrypfc - A spotter or partner to workout with, is a good idea on a number of levels (motivation, form or correct execution of exercise, pause between reps etc...)
Though do be careful not to push with your legs against the spotter. This is an arm/ shoulder/ back exercise. Isolate or focus on these muscles in your mind during the pull up.
If you are on your own though, use a chair and start in the "Up" position. Hold for as long as possible, SLOWLY descending, and repeat.

i do 10 with 20 kg additional weight on my body, this is the best way to train yourself. try it, add some kg more every week and try to do 10 - 12 lift-ups and lifting up your own weight 20 times is not a problem anymore.

@hugglebear69 hey, i put the weight to a special belt that i wear. either one you get in a gym, those that are used by professionals or a simple leather belt with an additional rope or something (creativity is the key ;) )
your training philosophy is probably the most healthy, as you can't fry your cns. it always depends on the aim you've got. if you wan't to get real strong (like 220 lbs benchpress and stuff) there's no other option :) muscle growth is rather caused by big weight than many reps

If we wanted to eat we had to do 10, If we couldn't we had to run round the parade ground...then do it again....and again.... Then if we failed they kept us in the dark and fed us pins... They made us eat bricks!! Sometimes we had to climb a rope instead.
That was in the 80's. It's easy now!

Common reasons for disqual. - 1. Criminal history. If you stole something, prob. no big deal! If you killed someone, very big deal! 2. Heavy drugs, no go!!! 3. Failed fitness/ psychological evaluation. (Srange 'cause they're mostly crazy fuckers anyway)
Security Questions - Specific questions I cannot remember, but they ask you to recount your life history, and then they ask you to do it again, and again etc... Any discrepancies will be noted and jumped on!!!

I am sorry but I must disagree with Arcane1Soldier. A healthly lifestyle i.e. eating heathly, working out, working out smarter by utilizing good running shoes etc, listening to your body and having the attitude and heart of a champion will take you along way.
At 47 (old man that I am) I can run a 10k in 46:00 min flat, bang out 20 dead hang pull ups and do MMA 2-3 time a week.
Age ain't nothing but a number.

im not that good at pull ups, but I can do situps until I get bored and pushups, I wouldnt know how many now... but all the ramassage I got in castel back then I could do around 118 119 as I was nearly always down en position (or corvée de chiot xD ).. now I could probably do 60 or 70 if I really tried hard and break a sweat.

There might be a chance you could join up with the mild asthma if you be up front with them and ask to take the trials to show how well you can do and if you do good enough, they may take you, but you might not be in Infantry role, but maybe a Admin Guy or Driver. Thats my guess.

You can easily buy replacement kepis at the foyer, which is the Legion shop on base! They get old and sweaty, and though you can wash them, it's sometimes just easier to buy a new one. Especially if there is an asshole at the "Post de sécurité" or guardroom.
Though I really wouldn't recommend losing it in the first place, you've got to get back into camp somehow! Without a Kepi on your head..... You're screwed!!!

I wonder if i join the FFL, how can i make it so that most of the pay i get from there is transfered here to the states and converted to us dollars for a family member, would they set up the account or ,etc. Im sure they will let me know, but i need better info on people who been there and done it. ....... For those that can't do one overhand pull up. Get a chair, stand on it and then hold your chin above the bar as long as you can, repeat 6 times. Do this for a month, then see how many regular pullups you can do.
Always warm up, drink plenty of water and adapt as necessary. Most people can do way more situps than any other exercise, so the 6x6 rule doesn't apply.
NOTE! Don't be ashamed if you CAN'T do it... Be ashamed if you DON'T do it. Nothin' wrong with tryin' your best!!!

Somethin' like say 50 push ups, 10 pull ups and 6 or 7 laps of the 400m track in under - I think - 12 minuets Google "Cooper Test", and you'll be just fine.
Those are just the physical test! If you're a crazy fuck (one candidate asked the Gestapo if the Legion still ran their own Bordels/ Brothels? Didn't stay long. LOL!). Then they send you home, killing you on the way back to Aubagne train station.

If you can't do 10 Overhand Pull ups, Go Home! Workout a little, and come back when your voice has broken an octave or two. However... I hate to say it, I believe the requisite number to get in, is 4.
But listen when I say, You REALLY need to be able to do 10! Come on, it' not so many!
While you're at it, climb a 6m Rope Just using your hands, No feet!(Called l'apératif. :)) The boots make the rope dirty, and we don't want dirty rope hanging around do we??
