I don't comment on much, but this, this masterpiece deserves a comment. This is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, alto sax ballad ever written. Absolutely gorgeous! With just a few notes Johnny Hodges can say what not even a thousand words could come close to. I almost come to tears listening to this...
Bought this album in Italy in 1970. The best version of Daydream I've heard. Hodges is brilliant, of course, and Strayhorn's counterpoint to the melody is incredibly haunting.
I think this is my favorite Hodges playing a Strayhorn tune. It is absolutley incredible. That specail bond between Strayhorn and Hodges is evident here. Of all the versions of this song check out Daydream on the album And His Mother Called Him Bill.
Hi grimmly, we wondered where this particular version came from? We tried the buy it from the iTunes and Amazon links but they are both different versions.
Johnny Hodges has been my insperation. I graduated highschool about 8 years ago and now im in a jazz band that plays bars and clubs frequently. All thanks to johnny hodges, he's why i kept playing after highschool
My grandmother was telling me the other day of back when my grandfather played this for her on his old 33 (I think it was?) and how she fell completely in love with the song.. I can't say that I really blame her now that I finally hear it!
I heard this (the Ellington version, this is slower) for the first time on a comedy show (!) on the BBC and I've searched for a year for this...one of the most beautiful jazz-melodies ever! Mellow, smooth and gorgeous!
Thanks for that. If you haven't got it already check out Johnny Hodges with Billy Strayhorn and his Orchestra on Verve, great great CD. Has Day Dream on it.
Lord, day D can wait ?

That's a fantastic recording. Have you ever heard his version of 'Tenderly' ?? it just hits this exact same mood as this piece.
