does anybody know if the drop tanks really work on these old warbirds. are they just for show? i hear by law that they can not drop the tanks in flight. not that you would want too.
The public needs to be aware of Pratt & Whitney Aircraft/United Technologies Corporations illegal behavior. In particular, attempting to provoke this caring and devoted father into committing suicide over my child care issues and then conspiring to obstruct justice in federal court against not only me, but in addition 4 other litigants/former UTC employees. Please check out my You Tube videos to find my website and genuine court documents.
what is it about the corsair that attacts us? certainly there were other aircraft in that era that were capable if not more so (jug) Me, i love the design, the look, the power, the mistique.
This plane is immaculate up close. I believe it's the Collings Foundation's Korean War era night fighter w/radar pod. I saw it in New Hampshire a few years back. Though, unfortunately I didn't get to see/hear it fly. I flew on Colling's B17G that weekend. A treat I still remember ;-).
I guess it looks kinda lame but might help save your ass if your up in the air in one of those old war birds. Man those old warbirds are just gorgious and none more so than a Corsair.
Ah the Messerschmitt BF-109 was a hell of a fighter, no question about it. Maybe the biggest argument against it was lack of range but it sure made life hell for the bombing crews of the Allied Airforces within it's range. At 38,000 ft. ceiling it hid in the high altitudes and pounced on the bombers at lower altitudes. Thats why they had to start mounting ball turrets on top of the bombers, they were sitting ducks for the BF-109s. Very fast & agile aircraft.
Thanks for the head's up propfan2k. So that is a WWII era invention and not some new age add on then right? Makes sense. Thanks for the video, beautiful plane man. I built a model of a Corsair when I was a kid, loved the F-4u Corsair ever since. I saw one fly in at a regional airport near Atlanta once, blew my mind and became a bigger fan after that. To steal a quote from the Crocodile Hunter: "She's gorgious!" ha ha
The "Zeros" they used in that show were not real Zeros, but rather, replicas made by making significant modifications to North American AT-6/SNJ "Texan" trainers. These modified aircraft were originally constructed for use in the movie, "Tora, Tora, Tora," and a number of them were later used in other movies, e.g. one of the "Iron Eagle" movies and of course the Black Sheep TV show. They're still seen today in airshows, too.
The right wing pod is a radar... historically it was one of the first planes in the Pacific (along with the F6F) that had them... allowed them to intercept at night.
they cant, on the ground you have to stick your head out the canopy and "fishtail" around. in the air it's not much of a problem because it flies nose down in straight and level flight. but you still can't see anything directly in front and slightly below you. just one of those things, there's a price to pay for 2000 horses
the right wing pod is a radar... historically it was one of the first planes in the pacific (along with the F6F) that had them... allowed them to fly at night. The -5 designation is the one that fought in Korea.
This aircraft was dubbed "the bent wing bastard" by fleet air arm pilots (UK forces) who were supplied with it in the 1950s. This was due to the enormous torque and power supplied by the engine in a relatively small airframe and the consequent difficulty in taking off or landing on a carrier deck.Nice to see one still flying 'though.
This F4U-5 Corsair is painted with the VC-3 configuration. It flew off the USS Princeton CV-37, as a night "Heckler" During the Korean War. Lt. Bordelon became the only Navy "Ace" in that conflict.
My late father flew 97 night heckler missions with VC-3 flying the F4U-5N off of USS Boxer and USS Kearsarge. Most of his sorties were to blow up trucks, trains, bridges and tunnels.
He went on to be an experimental test pilot with Douglas/McDonnell Douglas/Boeing between 1957-1999. A believer in Jesus Christ, a gentleman, wonderful father, patriot and accomplished pilot. He is missed.

The dome on the starboard wing housed airborne interception radar. This specific model was built for use as a night fighter.
