  • does anybody know if the drop tanks really work on these old warbirds. are they just for show? i hear by law that they can not drop the tanks in flight. not that you would want too.

  • sexiest plane ever made

  • F4U-5NL = Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • pratt&whitney R-2600 18 piston engine on these correct?

  • @teletubbykiller23: It' s an R-2800, actually

  • @propfan2k oh pratt&whitney's equivelent to curtiss wright's R-3350 18 piston engine

  • other vid talk about starting the engine and requiring a "cartrige" a shotgun shell......any one here can explain how that worked?

  • what is it about the corsair that attacts us? certainly there were other aircraft in that era that were capable if not more so (jug) Me, i love the design, the look, the power, the mistique.

  • Hell of a plane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I'll assume 'NP' means No Peer!

  • This plane is immaculate up close. I believe it's the Collings Foundation's Korean War era night fighter w/radar pod. I saw it in New Hampshire a few years back. Though, unfortunately I didn't get to see/hear it fly. I flew on Colling's B17G that weekend. A treat I still remember ;-).

  • nothin beats that sound.

  • That's essentially correct, Brad. Thanx for the compliments and thanx for watching!

  • What is that white bubble like thing on the right wing? What is it for?

  • it might be some sort of radar

  • Is that some new contraption or is this somthing of the WWII era.

  • i think its something they recently added to the plane

  • I guess it looks kinda lame but might help save your ass if your up in the air in one of those old war birds. Man those old warbirds are just gorgious and none more so than a Corsair.

  • me...i like the bf 109

  • Ah the Messerschmitt BF-109 was a hell of a fighter, no question about it. Maybe the biggest argument against it was lack of range but it sure made life hell for the bombing crews of the Allied Airforces within it's range. At 38,000 ft. ceiling it hid in the high altitudes and pounced on the bombers at lower altitudes. Thats why they had to start mounting ball turrets on top of the bombers, they were sitting ducks for the BF-109s. Very fast & agile aircraft.

  • The dome on the starboard wing housed airborne interception radar. This specific model was built for use as a night fighter.

  • Thanks for the head's up propfan2k. So that is a WWII era invention and not some new age add on then right? Makes sense. Thanks for the video, beautiful plane man. I built a model of a Corsair when I was a kid, loved the F-4u Corsair ever since. I saw one fly in at a regional airport near Atlanta once, blew my mind and became a bigger fan after that. To steal a quote from the Crocodile Hunter: "She's gorgious!" ha ha

  • @propfan2k COOL!!!!

  • That's an F4U-N, the pod is a radar used for night interception etc.

  • Ascend3r: thank you for the clarification. Beautiful plane man.

  • Great Video, Great warbird.

  • It's the Collings Foundation F4U-5N, with Dale Snodgrass flying it most likely. Beautiful airplane!

  • One of the toughest looking American warplanes ever. It just looked like it wanted a fight.

  • F4U Corsair U.S. NAVY VC-3 Korean War

  • Anyone else have the Models of the Zero and Corsair from the Blacksheep tv show in the 70's ?? I remember them hanging from my ceiling lol.

  • The "Zeros" they used in that show were not real Zeros, but rather, replicas made by making significant modifications to North American AT-6/SNJ "Texan" trainers. These modified aircraft were originally constructed for use in the movie, "Tora, Tora, Tora," and a number of them were later used in other movies, e.g. one of the "Iron Eagle" movies and of course the Black Sheep TV show. They're still seen today in airshows, too.

  • It looks like either a spitfire, or a hawker hurricane.

  • I forgot the ?

  • thought so, ty

  • what's the aircraft parked beside the runway when the corsair lands?

  • That's a Supermarine Spitfire (either a Mk.IX or a Mk.XIV. I'm not suite sure which)

  • Its a Mk.IX. No bulges above the exhaust ports.

  • The original muscle car of the sky. With 6 .50's.

  • Wow that's a late version. That thing has a radar and 4 props.

  • One propellor, with Four blades

  • Isn't that an 5n

  • Correct

  • Nothing like the roar of a Pratt and Whitney engine is there!

  • I bet the enemy heard it

  • I really like this old aircraft.

  • blacksheep blacksheep!!!!

  • Naah, the did´nt fly nightfighters! This is a F4U 5N!

  • that is one beutiful sound

  • Don't recall them doing that last July. But it always is a crowd favorite.

  • went there in 1990. Great show. Still do the pumpkin drops into the cornfield?

  • The right wing pod is a radar... historically it was one of the first planes in the Pacific (along with the F6F) that had them... allowed them to intercept at night.

  • wut is on the right wing?? beautiful airplane

  • what engine is in one of these corsairs?

  • Pratt and Whitney R-2800-32 engine with a two stage supercharger, rated at a maximum of 2,450 hp

  • I didn't realize the nose was so long. How could they see past it?

  • they cant, on the ground you have to stick your head out the canopy and "fishtail" around. in the air it's not much of a problem because it flies nose down in straight and level flight. but you still can't see anything directly in front and slightly below you. just one of those things, there's a price to pay for 2000 horses

  • thats one mean mother

  • F. NICE MEN!!!

  • sweet sweet pratt whitney wasp eh

  • that thing on the right wing is a radar, why would he need a radar in an air show?

  • it's a fuel drop tank

  • the right wing pod is a radar... historically it was one of the first planes in the pacific (along with the F6F) that had them... allowed them to fly at night. The -5 designation is the one that fought in Korea.

  • Is tis an F4U-5N or NL?

  • nice vid, love warbirds

  • This aircraft was dubbed "the bent wing bastard" by fleet air arm pilots (UK forces) who were supplied with it in the 1950s. This was due to the enormous torque and power supplied by the engine in a relatively small airframe and the consequent difficulty in taking off or landing on a carrier deck.Nice to see one still flying 'though.

  • F&^@(! Nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i would like to hear from a pilot who has flown both the corsair and a p51-d mustang. which is his favorite to fly and for what reasons?

  • This F4U-5 Corsair is painted with the VC-3 configuration. It flew off the USS Princeton CV-37, as a night "Heckler" During the Korean War. Lt. Bordelon became the only Navy "Ace" in that conflict.

  • I here it kill more novice pilots than any other plane of ours in the war. Partly due to the fax that it had so much power.

  • My late father flew 97 night heckler missions with VC-3 flying the F4U-5N off of USS Boxer and USS Kearsarge. Most of his sorties were to blow up trucks, trains, bridges and tunnels.

He went on to be an experimental test pilot with Douglas/McDonnell Douglas/Boeing between 1957-1999. A believer in Jesus Christ, a gentleman, wonderful father, patriot and accomplished pilot. He is missed.

  • @HilltopJames God Bless your dad!

  • @HilltopJames - who was your Dad. I was,and am Douglas and McDonnell Douglas, and now Boeing from 1988 until now.

  • Don't want to name names on Youtube. Check MD archives for Project Pilot on MD-80 UHB Demonstrator. That would be him.

PS: Interesting author of this Youtube post goes by the name Propfan2k ...Coincidence?

  • Simply fascinating, these magnificent war birds!

  • the F4U-5N. Man what a plane.Last Corsair fighter in Navy history. (unless you count the AU-1). Oh and the F4U-7 was built for the French.

  • In my opinion, F4U-1D Corsair is the most fantastic fighter of all thte times!

    Miguel Stefanelli - Brazil

  • This year's airshow is scheduled for July 13 to 15. If you'll be in Western NY it's definitely worth checking out!

web search "1941 HAG" for more details

  • great

  • my favourite american aircraft has to be the B25 mitchell

  • i love these old aircraft

  • Me too! ;)

    Thanx for looking!

  • This is an F4U-5N variant, which was used as a night fighter. One of the last Corsair variants that was produced.

  • What´s that under the right wing?

  • The bulge under the right wing was the housing for a radar set so this variant could be used as a night-fighter.

  • WOW THATS ONE OF MY FAVORITES!!!

  • i was there
