  • This video works perfectly with this song. It actually made the song for me years ago. It just works perfectly.

  • One of the saddest music I've ever heard. Really beautiful, but just so sad.

The video makes it even worse.

  • ahhhhhh this is too sad

  • This is the most beautiful video on youtube...

  • Does anybody know if there is a version with English sub-titles ? I have scoured the internet without success. I'm just curious about the full story and would love to read/hear it.

  • @hey0ldman On the internet, I'm not sure.. but I got the DVD set from a sale at a library, and you can order DVD's from the NFBC site.

Mine was a 3 disc collection of animation, cost like, 30$ and was TOTALLY worth it. Lot's of nostalgia on those discs. Now.. I can not remember for the life of me if it had subtitles.. but I THINK it did. :) hope that helps!

  • @gundamwang - Thanks, I really only want to know what is being said in this clip. I don't like the ending and figure if I knew what is being said, I would understand the ending better. No biggie.

  • @hey0ldman it's apparently supposed to be a FUNNY story, but man, I've never laughed.

  • *sigh* Oh, my heart has been broken by sadness and beauty.

  • Very powerful. Nice mix of animation and Ulrich's music.

  • Hey this is sand art isn't it?

  • Boards of Canada were influenced by the music played in the National Film Board of Canada documentaries in the 70's. Hence the name of the duo.

  • Crying my eyes out but I keep hitting the replay button over and over again. I've seen the Caroline Leaf film before & heard this song but never the two so befittingly together.

  • @suzyg18 ..The serendipidosity just keeps getting thicker! about 1 minute before getting an E-mail about this comment, This friggin song started playing on my list. I mean, I play this song fairly often, it's on my list on shuffle and probably plays once or twice a day, but WOW. this song and perfect timing seem to be best friends.

I'm really glad you like it! :D

  • Death was the only one around :(

  • saddest video ive ever seen

  • You posted the best youtube video I have ever seen. Thank You.

Did anyone else notice that on the third blink of the eye, the reflection blinked on the other eye? A symbol for accepting death, maybe?

  • @Schizo27 I did notice that.. but I never figured out if that was intentional or meaningful.. but that's a good an explanation as any! :D

    Thanks!

  • that's terrible :(

  • Great song and video. I enjoyed. Thank you, for posting.

  • It's from Ulrich and it's brilliant. Nothing else expected.

  • Nice Job Ms. Leaf

  • Sounds quite like the Shawshank Redemption theme...

  • amazing video and song!

  • Does anyone know where this track can be bought and downloaded?

    Thankyou.

  • @1cmman Google "The sound of cosmos torrent" It on the 3rd CD. Only place i found it

  • @Dakoder

    Thankyou :)

  • @1cmman youtube downloader?

  • sad

  • trauriges video,

ps: nur , gänse essen keine fische.

  • That was delightful and very sad. It tore at the heartstriings.

  • Just precious... Art.

  • Shows a definition of what real love can be like, they maybe different but you'll never let go even if you drown in your own sorrow.

  • A fine story ... But sad becouse you try until you die .....

  • @axxmad dying for what you love most might be better to live to see the death your dreams, and beyond.

  • Reminds me of my self i never fit in no matter where i go I'm usually an outcast no matter how much i try to fit in.....but any way the song and vid are perfect together like apple pie and ice cream

  • I know what you mean... I am a misfit too. Always have been.

I thought this was really wonderful.

    From one misfit to another,

    ~Juliet

  • @silmalila =] Thanks us misfits have to stick together

  • aww this is sad..

  • that was worth the watch, thanks for posting that!

  • Love the music of Ulrisch schnauss. Got his "Far away trains passing by" Album... its even 2 CD's ! Awesome !

Ok about this song... it sounds dramaticly.. and this video is just the dot on the character " i "

It make the vid compleet !

  • Beautiful--sad, but beautiful, too. Thanks for posting. (You know, sometimes owls can't help it....)

  • i choked up during the last part :(

  • Not meaning to break the mood or anything, but the Inuit actually considered this story a humorous one.

  • lovee this song

  • Shouldn't that say 'were'???

  • fixed.

  • Great Vid!

  • is this song actually called

"you WHERE the only one around" ?

    or is it

"you WERE the only one around" ?

im just curious if that's a typo or not.

  • Typo. For some reason I've also seen it spelled "You we're the only one", but the true spelling is "you were"

  • you were....

  • fixed.

  • @beefchainsaw oh my god....why dont you say the same nicely?

  • Great song, great video. Great combination. Very touching and warm. The last scene saddens me. Serendipitous that you stumbled upon the combination by chance.

  • actually i would say

    GRADE "A+" and "TEN STARS"

  • i saw a registration number today P435 HYF. What are the chances of that?

  • I lol'd.

  • its unbeleiveable how insync this video is to this song, im glad you happind to accidently watch the two of them together and posted it on youtube

    GRADE A 5 STARS!

  • :(( sad but really good

  • Watch this if you believe that Everything Happens For a Reason:

    watch?v=2tiyixsKisA

  • how did you even come across this?

  • my mate is into all kinds of experimental music. i became interested in how different it sounded from everything else. I asked him for some artists to look for and he suggested Telefon Tel Aviv (who i also rate). I then saw this in Related Videos and yeah found it lol ;)

  • That was really sad - but a great animation. Thanks.

  • I feel like the owl sometimes...

  • the owl died :(

  • Maybe you should send this to Ulrich Schnauss! x

  • I agree with the even numbered comments. But its also important to note that if the soundtrack for The Oreilly Factor was used intermittently throughout the first few minutes that our empathy for the owl would probaby have not reached such profound levels.

  • aww (- why did the poor owl had to die > So saad..

  • Sublime track. Which album is this taken from?

  • THE music to listen to when your wife's gone to her night shift, but you really really need her to be there with you..... ulrich and zedetnik are the guys... I'm sure you can trust me on this !

  • Is a version of this track used on the Shawshank Redemption?

  • Don't think so, but I think it's safe to say I'm into the music I'm into, such as Ulrich partly because of the composer for that movie, Thomas Newman!

  • Hey gundamwang, thanks for the creative video, i agree what a coincidence.

Just a quick question, have you ever heard of Blue Sky Black Death? Very nice trip hop, i suggest you youtube them.

    Thanks Again

  • I'm pretty shure that this is a line out of shawshank redemption. Did schnauss steal it? Anyway great song nice animation, fits really good together.

  • where can I download the original song?

  • I have no idea.. I'm trying to track down all his work on vinyl actually. this is one of my favorites for SURE. :)

  • It's on disc 3 of the Sound of Cosmos compliation.

  • its a caroline leaf work

    not Ulrich Schnauss!!!

  • yes, yes, read the description. nobody at any point EVER said he made the video.

  • ok, after reading the description i know that there is no credit for the real artist over there too. come on man.... so lame of you...

  • out of the current 14,512 views of this video, you're the only one bent out of shape over this. so I fixed it, JUST FOR YOU! I'm not saying she doesn't deserve the credit, she most certainly does! she's wonderful! but man, just enjoy this silly little video for what it is. a fantastic coincidence. that's why I wanted to share this in the first place.

  • so sad, it has a deep message too

  • its a big sad beauty thats for sure...vid and aud go well 2gethr but i wouldnt read n2 it much.

  • must have link to song T_T

  • Ulrich Schnauss is dope

  • And I like to smoke him.

  • Absolutely amazing!

I know they weren't created together, but they fit together so well!

  • Absolutely brilliant..

Music and video made for each other, so beautiful and yet so moving.

    Thank-you.

    Paul

  • its a friggin sign! it was MEANT TO BE. the odds are too crazy not to be.

    ------

    zweefteef

  • Yes indeed.

    And I love Zweefteven,

  • this is a beautiful song, the video fits it perfectly.

  • Magical. I loved it

  • a charming thing

  • serendipitous indeed dude. 2 great tastes that taste great together. =D

  • This still gives me goosebumps

  • I love ulrich and i never knew about this track, thx for bringing it to my attention, and yes it was perfect for this video, even though i had never seen it before :)

  • Thanks for sharing this. I love how they fit together, the ending makes me sad. I couldn't imagine one without the other.

  • While I was delighted to re live this charming but sad tale, I was disappointed that the beautiful original sound had been overlayered. If you could possibly share the original sometime and turn on the sound then you too could share a wonderful experience. Thank You.

  • I've experienced the original, and I'd love for others to as well, but I only uploaded this one to showcase the fantastic coincidence that the video and audio came together in. :D

I kinda feel it wasn't just a coincidence!

  • It was meant to be so you would upload it to youtube and people could discover the genius that is Ulrich Schnauss. heh.

  • Good song by Ulrich Schnauss, but awesome animation by Caroline Leaf. People should watch The Street, it's oil paint on glass animation. Real good.

  • I DID see that one, it was fantastic! she's brilliant.

  • Definitely dude.

  • The song is brilliant, and the owl is so sad :(

  • Very nice job. Were you stoned when you were watching NFBC videos with the sound turned off and ambient music?

  • haha, well, inebriated for sure! :D ever since then, this song has had HUGE significance to me. it's my favorite, ever. :D

  • What album is this track on? I can tell it's Ulrich a mile away.

It seems to be made for this video. Amazing.

  • I have no idea, actually.. I haven't found much info on it. but it's my favorite song of his, for sure.. it like, hits that nerve that nothing else seems to be able to hit. he apparently has multiple titles as an artist. I'm going to be snooping around a LOT, for sure.

  • Love the video.

    The track features on:

    The Sound of the Cosmos

on Disc 3, 'You were the only one around'.

  • Animator Caroline Leaf made this. This isn't the original soundtrack though, as you already know. I also know for a fact that she hates this version, as she told me herself.

  • how do you feel about it?

  • well she can suck a poo

  • That's pretty trippy. Neat how it all fit together.

  • That ending made me want to cry, heh

  • Beautiful song and beautiful animation. Great

  • where can I watch nfbc video's? ^^

  • just search "National Film Board"

  • That was really sad.

  • That's a strange coincidence, gundamwang. Perhaps some things are there by design rather than accident :)
