  • This is too bad. But then L.A. has the MOST of all nationally, due to its size.

  • Thanks for this video of how bad it is here in unemployment and homelessness No one at the employment office gives a damn about how many people are unemployed. If it was not for housing assistance I would be on the street and still may be on the street soon due to lack of a job. I have good skills and a 4 year degree and it means nothing. i am tired of employers treating the job lookers like they are dirt. I am too young to take SS and do not understand how they are getting it early.

  • Thanks for this video of how bad it is here in the way of unemployment that causes homelessness. I have been unemployed since 2009 and there are no jobs here hardly. Everything now is online and one click of the mouse can take you out of the jobs system. Most Craigslist jobs are not even answered by real people but by computers. Never have things been so bad here in Portland. I never have had it this bad since MSI laid me off last year. i have no kids thank God. We are in the top 3 for jobs lost

  • I have lived here since 1991 from Oklahoma and at that time found 2 jobs within a week when there was no recession. Now there really are no jobs. MSI laid me off and it was a call center and call center jobs are all being outsourced. Because so many companies are leaving Portland that is why we are in the top three on unemployment, hunger, and homelessness due to the high cost of living here. It has been over a year and a half and if I do not find something soon I will be homeless.

  • Liberal towns and lefty towns are the most unfriendly towns of all. And they are the towns where people care about each other the least. That's caused by "diversity." Research has shown that "diversity" diminishes community cohesiveness and charitable instincts.

  • Portland also has the highest unemployment rate of almost any city in the US right now. This is because of the lack of caring of any of the unemployment agencies and all you hear when you call them over and over is "We can't help you" and we do not want to help you". The attitude of helping the unemployed find a job is HORRIBLE. MSI laid me and 199 others off in 2009 and closed the company and most of us cannot find other work things are so bad. the unemployment office could care less!!!!!

  • help

  • It's funny how food costs more than cigarettes or alcohol. Anything substantial enough to keep you alive isn't going to come cheap. Our lovely socialist hand-out programs don't give you anything if you are homeless and do not work. Nice, huh? I've lived in Oregon for 29 years, and I can honestly say that it was much better 20 years ago. I'll never live there again, so help me God. Notice how most large American cities exemplify economic polarity, while smaller communities are largely even? Hmm..

  • I live in Portland, NW 23rd. St. It is really sad to have homeless in such a beautiful city. Most of them are White American Lazy Guys, they don't have money for food, but if you see them all they have money for cigarrettes and alcohol. HAHAHAH.

At least illegal immigrants work, but white lazy people dont want to do anything.

  • 10 year plan? people will all be dead from being homeless if it takes anywhere near that long!

the resources are there, they are being squandered.

the people in charge of the housing authority don't revise their regulations for housing, so no one in public housing can invite a homeless person over to stay.

etc etc just a lack of good smart and serious analytical gifted leadership and decisionmaking. not the economy, it's the people making decisions that are failing.

  • a darker side of portland

  • I'm from Portland...I had NO IDEA.

    It's such a beautiful city...

  • sucky

    im from oR

  • I arrived in Portland in 1986 on the invitation of Mitch Snyder and Mike Stoops Washington DC's and Portland's most visible activists respectively.

I struggled for more than 11 years carrying a unique message that drug users can gain self-control.

The biggest reason for Portland's homeless problem is that the City got lazy and let the religions draw homeless policy. In such an environment, helping the homeless remain homeless is an easy way to make bucketsfulls of money.
