I don't see why people can't understand that a solution (albiet temporary) would be to find more oil to lower the gas prices. We obviously havent instituted a new source of energy (not saying we haven't found one), so why not find it elsewhere? Let's drill so we're not paying as much at the pump.
there are 5 ways to bring down oil prices. 1. carpool. a car with 5 passengers instead of the usual 1 means 4 less cars on our highways. 2. get the govt to spend money on mass transit. if you make public transportation affordable, attractive, and comfortable, many people might get out of their cars at least 5 days a week. 3. get the govt to expand amtrak to 48 states and call it the national rail service.

archangelhunter there was a lot of hope in the 1970s that America would shortly be developing alternative sources of energy and it never happened. The technology just isn't there and I wouldn't be surprised if another thirty years go by and we're still driving cars that run on gasoline. Moreover global warming is real and we should curb carbon dioxide emissions but it won't happen. Oil fuels everything and the change will take a very long time.
(Sorry, this is starting to get off topic.) The only way alternative energy can compete with oil is for the price of oil to rise. If it costs the same for a home to be heated by wind or PV as it does for gas, then the logical choice is to install wind turbines or photo voltaic panels. In the long run, wind and solar are free and renewable. The whole issue is whether the world is ready to switch to this technology. Maybe you're right, maybe not yet, but someone needs to take the first step.

You just proved my point. I said gas prices are high because of market speculation manipulating the prices, NOT based on supply/demand. Since his speech, NO supply has increased, No demand has decreased. Yet, prices went down, why? Due to market speculation. No other product does this. We must tell Republicans to quit blocking the bill that would decrease market influence on gas prices, release gas from our reserves, and illegalize price gouging.

You just proved my point again. You are right! US oil production has little to do with the worlds crude price. Therefore, raising our production a bit by drilling, will not lower gas prices.
Bush "speculates" drilling will help because "gas prices are high due to supply & demand." I say they are high due to speculators manipulating the market. YOU said the price has dropped 30 cents since the speech. BUT supply has not increased!! THEREFORE the price goes down due to changes in speculation.

You would get about 3 tanks of gas per acre with Wheat and about 9 tanks of gas per acre with Corn.
What it takes in grain to fill up an SUV one time, could feed a person for up to a year.
How large a carbon foot print is crated to grow and harvest an acre of Wheat or Corn?

there are 5 ways to bring down oil prices. 1. carpool. a car with 5 passengers instead of the usual 1 means 4 less cars on our highways. 2. get the govt to spend money on mass transit. if you make public transportation affordable, attractive, and comfortable, many people might get out of their cars at least 5 days a week. 3. get the govt to expand amtrak to 48 states and call it the national rail service.

sugar cane ethanol is working out great in brazil. corn ethanol is creating a food shortage, and is not economically viable.
the oil companies have 30 millian acres upon which to drill, and they are not even using it.
the oil companies have received gov. subsidies to build more refineries. they took the money, and never built the refineries.
if the price per barrel of oil goes down, count on bush to saber rattle at iran to get market speculators to buy, and drive the price back up again.

Have you considered that people in Denmark and many other European and Asian countries rely on public transportation and extremely fuel efficient cars? A personal vehicle is a luxury to those people and gasoline is a luxury. Bush is proposing a "band-aid", short term fix to rising gas prices. This is not acceptable for our next generation. Renewable energy is what our country needs and until that technology can compete with gasoline, it will not be developed. Let the gas prices rise!

We should depend less on our cars, live closer to work, and take transit whenever possible. President Bush said in his press release, there is an estimated 10 years of oil offshore. Not even considering the costs of setting up operations to drill the oil and the potential for another Exxon Valdez disaster, it is not worth the investment. The money could be better spent on developing renewable energy. The people hurt most by rising gas prices are the people who drive SUV's/hummers to work...

There's enough oil in The Middle East for another 50 years at least. There's still a huge supply regardless of what lying sack of shit assclown Bush has to say. archangelhunter there was a lot of hope in the 1970s that America would shortly be developing alternative sources of energy and it never happened. The technology just isn't there and I wouldn't be surprised if another thirty years go by and we're still driving cars that run on gasoline. Moreover global warming is real and we should curb carbon dioxide emissions but it won't happen. Oil fuels everything and the change will take a very long time.

(Sorry, this is starting to get off topic.) The only way alternative energy can compete with oil is for the price of oil to rise. If it costs the same for a home to be heated by wind or PV as it does for gas, then the logical choice is to install wind turbines or photo voltaic panels. In the long run, wind and solar are free and renewable. The whole issue is whether the world is ready to switch to this technology. Maybe you're right, maybe not yet, but someone needs to take the first step.

I look at these bullshit oil rigs everyday and see the diesel fuel that spills from the transport boats onto the pristine beach. I've posted a similar message before, but, apparently people don't get it. I'll make this short: Cars run on gasoline. Not solar. Not electric. Not compressed air. Gasoline. Investing in alternatives will not change the fact that my Buick LeSabre runs on gasoline. It also doesn't change the fact that, while the Volt is pretty cool and I would own one, I can't afford it. I'm stuck with a combustion engine and I'm don't want to pay more than I already do for gas. Drill here, drill now.

The price of gasoline will continue to climb even as Bush produces more bullshit. An increase in Bush bullshit production is therefore not likely to negatively impact gas prices. In fact the two are completely separate and there is no correlation whatsoever.

For instance ignorance is correlated with but not necessarily caused by low income. As income rises ignorance declines so they are negatively correlated but there is not necessarily any cause and effect. You LINKED the stupid comment to me but that's not a correlation. You need a statistically significant sample size of two types of things i.e. in the previous example income and ignorance for a correlation to be possible.
