De Valera was one of only two members of the 1916 Rising that could escape execution - the other being Markiewicz. Dev had an American passport and it is always in bad taste to execute a US citizen especially when you needed them to stay out of WWI or stop them supporting the Germans. He had no Fenian background and it's quite surprising that he got so far in 3 years within the IRB. The others were done for. What about The Irish Press plc scam created by Dev and that continues till today?

Why didn't Dev himself go across to the treaty negotiations? He was weak, he knew Ireland wouldn't get a republic and couldn't face being the fall guy. Instead he sent across Griffith and Collins to do the dirty work. Nice work.

We still had the Monarch as head of state still had to swear an oath, we still had no control of our ports and the British exchequer still regulated our rates. We didnt get the level of freedom we enjoy today until the work of the De Valera in the 40`s when he abolished Soar Stat and made the Republic.

@patjoethebaker If Michael Collins had really wanted an all Ireland Republic he would not have sanctioned the executions of more IRA volunteers in one year than the British did in 6 years. De Valera was far from a whiney bitch he was the bravest and most successful leader of the Easter Rising. Not to mention it was De Valera who ordered the attack on the custom house, the one event that finally brought the British to the table. Collins sneaky shot in the back policy was getting nowhere.

The British were giving away colonies like raffle prizes in the 1940's because they couldn't afford to keep them, wouldn't have made any difference if it was Dev, Michael Collins or Eamonn Dunphy that was leader. Dev also ensured that we went from one repressive regime straight into another and sending his condolences to the German Ambassador in 1945 wasn't his smartest move either.
