And you got Mew either through events like you do now, or you could get it through the Mew glitch, search it up on YouTube, there were many ways to perform it. :) .. However I'm not sure if this worked in Yellow, lol

I got into the main series of Pokemon games a few years later than many. I started playing gen 1 in early 2001. Played gen 2 in late 2002. Gen 3 in 2004, and didn't get any gen 4 game until 2008 (although I borrowed diamond in 2007 before I got it). When I heard that Gold and Silver were getting remakes, I was so happy.
