@stewie493 That's a question that I really don't know that I want to think about haha! But if I could go back and do it again, I'd definitely do some things differently.. like buy a used tank and buying dead rock/sand.. that would have saved a TON of money!
@xClawed At the time of this video, I did not.. if you watch my two newest update videos, I just added a sump/refugium/protein skimmer about a week or two ago.. Tank is doing great with their addition..
@tuckman315 ;o) He was taken out just after this vid was taken.. didn't really bother much of anything in my tank.. got a hold of a couple mushrooms though..
@FretFreak13 Ha! Thanks! Too bad the anemone didn't agree that it was the coolest place in the tank.. moved out of it after maybe a couple hours.. lol
@PTBSlovak Hey man, I feel ya on the algae thing.. I've had my battles lol... If you have a good algae cleaning crew that's a good step but ultimately... really keep up on your water changes and make sure to only use RO/DI water... I bought a 75gpd RO/DI system a while back and it's made a world of difference in helping to keep the algae in check!!
@PTBSlovak RO/DI just stands for Reverse Osmosis / De Ionized water... basically it's just a really really good filtration system.. you can get fairly decent priced, good quality systems from bulkreefsupply . com. If you want to buy RO water, you can go to your local Super Wal-Mart or a grocerty store.. most of them have a drinking water system where you can buy a water container and refill it for pretty cheap..
@melissacarl2002 I'd suggest doing some water param tests or maybe take a sample to your LFS and ask them to check it... and yea, could definitely be the lighting... what kind of lights do you have on the thank? Anemone's are very light sensitive and actually feed off of the light..
at 0:58 ... your anemone is in a clam shell!? When I saw the thumbnail of that It'looks really awesome, and it does looks sweet, i have to admit... but wont that hurt the anemone? They need alot of light and how do u feed it?
@xXxNavinxXx Nah it was fine.. but after a day or so it moved around and found a place for itself.. for food though, they mainly feed off of the light.. and otherwise I generally feed the anemone a piece of krill every once in a while..
@mrperryguitar Well I've got a crap ton of live rock so there are plenty of pods to keep him fed, but I also buy a bag of copepods every once in a while to add to the tank just to make sure he has enough food...
Thanks! Every species of clown have the same sexing... if you have a pair of clowns the larger is the female and the smaller the male... Clowns are born neither M or F... in a groupt, the most dominant will grow the largest and become female and the second in line will become the male... if the female dies, the male will turn into a female and the next most dominant will turn into the male...
i have 30gal and 20 gal im setting it up soon buti have to make stand, what is the basic maintaining salt water what is the most important to check, thanks
Great lookin tank man. Am in the middle of piecin together an ALL GLASS 65 gal. pre-drilled and am buildin my sump in a 29 gallon. Built an extension to the bottom of the cabinet stand out of 2x12's to give it the extra height I need to fit a protein skimmer without being cramped height wise. Worked out well the tank is right at eye level- wasnt sure if it would be too high but I like the height its at. Is different than most
That general star is going to eat your anemones. Your christmas worm rock will die (both the worms and the porites). Looks like to me you have an uniformed fish store. Also, you would be better off if you just threw that fluval in the trash and ran the tank with no filter at all. A sump with a GOOD skimmer will save you a lot of time and money in the future. I'm not trying to be a jerk but I have been doing this for a really long time.
Hey there, thanks... actually I had the General Star before I ever decided to add any reef stuff.. but I got rid of him... The worm rock is still doing well actually been over a year since I added it to the tank...
fluval... I'm still using it but only cuz i've been unemployed for a while now and dont' have the funds to put in a sump/fuge.. already bought a 30gal tank to use but need everything else still ;o)
Thank you for your quick response torosax! So the intension of the SUMP its simply to keep maintenance easier and avoid bad algae problems? It has nothing to do with quality of the water? because some say the quality its really different in an tank with SUMP and with Canister. I just wanna save some money, and space but always buying the correct equipment thats why im getting some advice from you. Thank you.
well... quite honestly with having a sump, your water quality will improve because you'll have more water... more water=better water quality... so I mean it's not horrible the other way... I usually do about a 10 gal water change every two weeks... So yeah, won't be a drastic difference but it'll be better than using a canister... Whichever you choose though, you'll be fine. ;o)
Amazing tank, congratulations great work! I need an advice , im about to buy an aquarium but I have many doubs about the filtration, I want to use instead of a SUMP a Canister (Fluval FX5) my tank will be about 350liters many people say this Canister wont work fine for a Reef Tank, but I can see than in your case it works amazing! Please help me, in your opinion do you think FX5 wolud me enought for this reef tank size? Thank you.
Um, I agree that you should be perfectly fine using an FX5... I'm using a Fluval 405 on the same size tank as what you're going to get....
On the other hand though, I desperately want to put a sump/refugium in for my tank... I've already bought a 30Gal tank to use, I've just gotta save up the money to buy everything I need for it.
It would just make the maintenance a lot easier.. got a place for macro algae to grow so there's not much fighting with algae problems and then there's a better breeding ground for copepods and such...
But, all in all, if you wanted to use an FX5 I think you'd be fine. My tank has been up and running for a little over a year with my 405...
beautiful tank i just started a biocube and have a question it says on the box the light is 36watts( cf light ) but there is also an actinic light so does that make it 72 because there are 2 rocks?
Actually the Red General Star isn't in the tank anymore... was only in there for a short time... and the Mandarin is doing fine. There's about 100lbs of live sand and over 100lbs of live rock...he's been in the tank for about a year now, fat and has had no health problems...
hey umm how do you take care for all the different fishies. You must be very responsable. I have one betta in a 3 gal. tank with a cool hiding are and coral reef thingy. I'M probably going to buy a corydora
The bigger the tank is, the happier and less stressful the fish look, your fish look really happy and calm, lots of nice places to hide, that's really good too.
Rock does not look alive. did you buy the rock that was 8 dollars a pound or 3 dollars a pound? The sabae anenome in the clam shell looks sweet I must add tho.
um, I guess it depends on where you go... most all the rock I have was about 5 or 6 a lb. So I dunno... The anemone is a Purple Condylactis though, but thanks!
Very nice tank, but your clownfish should actually be a male if it isn't part of a pair and I would bet that your clam would be happier in the sand bed IMO :)
Wow, this is crazy... I just watched this vid again and can't believe how much my Blue-tipped Acropora and Xenia have grown since recording this vid.. I mean I see them every do I don't notice but wow!
funny that you should ask that, cuz I'm now in the middle of a crazy algae battle. But, luckily things are getting better... I just pulled a crapload out last night... been using "Algaefix Marine" and it seems to be slowly killing off my nuisance algae, and my herbivores are working on the rest for me ;o)
Since this vid my kole tang disappeared and I also lost my cleaner shrimp.. y? no idea honestly, but I've gotten a few more algae eaters, ...lawnmower blenny, a naso tang, and coral beauty
that sucks. I'm battling hari algae myself. I bought phosbuster but it didn't even work, tried to turn the lights of for a week but that didn't work and it stressed my corals. Finally i found a ro unit for a steal and i'm slowly replacing the water in the tank and the algae seems to be dying. hopefully though my clean up crew will keep it from coming back. That algae fix chemical you're using, what kind of nuisance algae did it kill? I might have to try it
mainly just ridiculous hair algae... I've just finished uploading a vid/pics that I took this evening so I'll reply to this video with my new one and you can check it out.. can still see a good amount of algae but not nearly as bad as it was...
well... honestly, I have no idea how I, came across it or what it's real name is... found it back in college sometime like 8 years ago. When I downloaded it, it was called My Romance, so that's what I've always had it titled as.
yeah after a few days of having him he's been rather active and still doing great after a good couple of months now. Bought a bottle of Copepods on Ebay to make sure that he's well fed too. ;o)
the leather could be getn too much current they dont like alot of current or too much light also . although the cap needs that much light . could be a element missing or something.
250HQI Metal Halides, with 4 54w Actinic T5s, and then at night it's got two clusters of Blue Moonlights with 7 1w LED's in each cluster. Nope no chiller, but I do have a fan on the light fixture to avoid overheating the tank. I'm rather pleased with my Blue Tip Acropora, in this original vid the tips aren't all that visible, but since taking that vid, they are BRIGHT Blue and look cool as hell!
nice vid wat type of lights u have and do u have a chiller? man i added T5HOs on my system took off my compacts and growth is kikn ass plus no over heating and i still have chiller it changed the ecosystem of my tank totaly
lol, well when I put it in the tank I kinda put it in so that it would maybe stay in the clam shell but, alas, it didn't like it so much... lol eventually when I get a chance I'll tak a new vid with a different camera so hopefully the coloring of everything will look better...
Actually, it's been doing ok for the most part, I've been keeping my eye on him when I can and he's only made a meal out of maybe one red mushroom so.. hopefully it doesn't develop a taste... lol
Ok, I just watched this and I think I'm gonna have to try and record a video with a better camera... the coloring isn't even close to what it's supposed to look like...
