this is truly a classy song. Just watching the guy walk around in the first few seconds makes it so classy. I truly enjoy this song every time i listen. everything ranging from the amazing trumpet player to the amazing bass line makes this song so worth it every time
@13lack3agle; Dizzy claimed he bent his once and liked it. As a trumpet player I have always hated having to hold my arms up to get the bell of the trumpet from facing the ground. To me it's a more natural although improper position. Besides... it's way cool!
He played the amazing trumpet solo in the opening scene a well as the closing credits to the 1977 movie 'The Gauntlet' starring Clint Eastwood. He's listed as one of two jazz soloists in the film's credits. He also helped with the helicopter chase scene hitting the upper register as Clint rides his motorcycle.
I play sax and I wouldn't change that for the world, but there are a couple of guys who make me jealous. Dizzy Gillespie, Clifford Brown, and now this dude that I've checked him out.
I can't stop listening to this performance, its so beautifully done. Faddis tone is full and brassy yet he has a soft touch not to mention upper register and creativity. if I practice for 5 years. 3 hours a day I might ber able to sort of duplicate this in a halfassed way. I'd like to try. Can anyone tell me the name of the song?
@metatarsalman Here's that Rainy Day.I agree this performance is monumental. You can get it on DVD. I have it and the whole evening slays. Now if I can find and old LP of this performance I'll be a pig in mud.
The reason he uses a upward bell is because in one of his shows, during intermition, someone steppen on it and he played it like that and liked it so he had one made customely for him.
@FunnehGruntz1 I saw a horn with that turned up bell in the catalog of Woodwind Brasswind. They have a website where you can shop and order one. Have fun!
I listen to this song every day at work and at home, it is an extremely well balanced out song, including a variety of techniques that Faddis has mastered. Even though it is an old song, the essential meaning of it is still for us to learn about. We can all try living up to such jazz professionals. but we will always fail to overpass their accomplishments. Jazz=Music=Knowledge=Happiness
@Shawnieboy33 haha, this is not smooth, man. this is a very straight-ahead interpretation of a standard ballad. unless you were joking, in which case, cool! i like jokes.
The only reason for someone to dislike this would be if they didn't like jazz... In which case, you have to ask yourself why they are watching this video...

@ng3333 Actually, he designed them exactly so he could hear himself better. The first time was an accident when he sat on his horn and bent the bell up. After that, he always played on a bent bell horn. It does make a great difference as I played on my former professor's horn with a bent bell in college in my improvisation class. I'll be getting a custom one with a bent bell eventually.
@goodoldhiphop Support as much going down as you do going up... plus a little (not too much) halve-valve. It also helps if you are anywhere near as good as Jon Faddis!
@goodoldhiphop im guessing your talking about the starting high note too down low its a lip slur and half valving. or you may be talking about the shake
@toontown1111 Haha Dizzy's trumpet was accidentally bent by being stepped on I think. And then people thought it looked really cool so a couple of trumpet manufacturers made trumpets to look like it :)
@TheNinosuth there's history about the trumpet. Back in the day when Dizzy was working construction someone had accidentally damaged the trumpet and caused it to become bent. Dizzy liked the look and decided to keep it's style and would have custom trumpets made to look like that. It became his signature trumpet.
Guys I know this story is stupid hard to believe, but roll with me. Basically fell in love with Jon the day I started playing trumpet and saw this video. In April, Conor, a friend of mine who plays saxophone in my high school's band and I went to New York to see him in Zankel Hall. We went that night, I think it was the 27th to see him and met a man Jorge (holding the last name for it seems appropriate to do so) who sat next to my mom, who went with us, and gave her his backstage passes.
We met him that night and ended staying for two or three hours before exiting the back door to Carnegie with him. He and his wife are the two coolest, most in touch with their spirituality, and kindest people I've ever met. Dream come true.
@nickheck Because it looks cooler that way. Really, I think it's so it aims towards the mic and he can hold his arms down so they don't get tired from holding it up towards the mic. Or maybe it's just another style of trumpet.
@nickheck some people's embouchure points them down, so to compensate for that he has a trumpet that allows him to play up towards the audience and mic. and this way he can play over stands if he uses them without having to alter his embouchure
@nickheck I am assuming it is so the sound can be projected out even if the player is comfortable in a position that would normally have the horn facing down.
It's a Dizzy trumpet. Someone accidentally stepped on Dizzy's trumpet one time and bent the bell. Dizzy played and decided it it's actually pretty cool. It projects better and he can read the music. So he had his trumpets custom made like that.
