In this instance the money has not yet been valued against the market correction of long term environmental impact + the resources expended on the project. Don't forget that money is just a representative currency, it's not absolute or holistic by any means.
environmental impact aside, we're talking about companies forking over billions-would you drop that much money on a bet with little chance of paying off?
the rich get richer because they invest wisely-period. you realize they do extensive research before actually drilling for resources.
