  • A ring-modulator is what the Daleks use, and sounds the least harmonic.

A talk-box has a "twangy" sound to it.

Auto-Tune sounds like you're underwater (it makes a "bubbly" sound).

A vocoder is the one that sounds most like a speaking or singing robot or computer. It is the COOLEST of the voice-modifiers!!! That's how you can tell the difference among them.

  • what a boss!

  • whats the name of the music in the background? :) its awsome

  • I though he said Ho Coder! lol!

  • So cool.. thanks for sharing.

  • o.O am i the only one who came across this video when looking up how to make an utauloid voicebank?...i was told that vocoder could be used for it...

  • great video!

  • Apart from Kenny Everett's demos on his Capital Radio show in the seventies, Dr Presson's demo is the most effective I've ever seen! Well done Doc.

  • Look at the monitor: he's writing the matrix code! ^^

  • Ummmm no pls just keep your day job lol, but love the entertainment.. Thumbs up :D

  • Oh my God I wish I had one of those!

  • The vocoder was invented in relative secrecy by Dr. Homer Dudley at Bell Labs in 1928. It was originally used in the SIGSALY voice scrambling system developed for the US Navy. It wasn't until 1936 that a public demonstration was made, using a recording of a power transformer as a modulation source- it was called "The Voice of Power".

  • only "CAAALIFORNIA LOOOOOOVE" is missing :'(

  • I'd drag my nuts through broken glass to have those keyboards.

  • I want oneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • BRILLIANT!

  • Now sing:

    "I am a dwarf and I'm digging a hole

    Diggy diggy hole

    I'm digging a hole

    Dwarf hole dig-diggy hole

    Diggy diggy hole

    I'm digging a hole"

Reply if you know what this is from. :)

  • The Roland SVC-350 is "Last of the Mohegans" as for Vocoders in the Vintage Analog family....Affordable, sounds great, and with the ensemble toggled its clearer for live performances. Although I wouldn't mind owning the King (EMS Vocoder) but for $17,000 to $25,000 US, the SVC-350 will do just fine and sells for just under $1,000. The ONLY software Vocoder that I think is the clearest and sounds real nice is the Prosoniq Orange Vocoder.

  • @intromix

    $25,000? More like $1,000-3,000.

  • @douro20 The EMS V1000 V2000 and V3000 have ranged at that price yes,,, When I say "EMS Vocoder" Im talking about EMS Vocoder 5000 aka EMS "The BIG one"

  • hahaha the funkytown part is so funny

  • Talkbox is way better dude.

  • @Supernoob38 Sorry, but Soundwave says..."Talk-box inferior, vocoder superior!!".

  • LOL GREAT I LOVE YOU NERD KING!!

  • Awh he should have said a Soundwave line...like "Yes Lord Megatron."

  • @raindelver Roland VP-330 Vocoder Plus (Mk1 or Mk2?)!!!

  • @reichmarshall haha, I love you.

  • thanks you nerd :D

  • how old are you?! I cant tell at all!

  • what a loaf of bread!

  • This guy gets all the pussy, oh and this reminded me of Daft Punk <3

  • @MithranArkanere You obviously have no idea what you're talking about.

  • You obviously don't understand what I'm talking about.

  • @MithranArkanere That makes two of us.

  • @aroze14 Unfortunately, I'm afraid I don't have time to explain it to the two of you. But I suppose you could google it.

  • @MithranArkanere Actually a COMPUTER synthesizes speech, and I know this is a vocoder because it says ROLAND SVC-350 VOCODER right on it.

  • @MithranArkanere A vocoder converts a voice that already exists, and that was recorded, you're a fucked attarded

  • Nice! That looks like heaps of fun...

  • ahahah nice

  • what kind of vocoder is that?

  • This guy reminds me of a nazi scientist.

    Legit screen saver btw.

  • Ice Nine Kills has a shirt in their stock that reads "Vocoders are for pussies"

    Amazing band, by the way.

  • @NucleonTrance Are you calling me a homosexual or a loaf of bread? Get your parent's permission next time before using the computer, Junior!

  • @reichmarshall Duuude Wayyy to go :D Thats the way to handle youtube trolls! Your awesome :D

  • @reichmarshall i think he mis-spelled "jumping nugget!"

  • @estlib LOL jumping nugget :D

  • @reichmarshall Or in the U.K. a cigarette.

  • Where do I get one?

  • @WalrusRockGod eBay, Craig'sList, or Vemia.

  • @VoiceEncoder Don't trust the first two, no idea what the third one is.

  • @WalrusRockGod Then it's unlikely you'll ever get one!!

  • thank you, I didn't know what a vocoder was and what it does ;-) - now I know!

  • kids, this is what you should NOT look like

  • 0:33 FAIL!! XD! see ya next time

  • I believe the vocoder started with the sonovox back in the 40s

  • @Npeo No, the vocoder is electronic...Sonovox is mechanical. The vocoder was invented in 1928 by Homer W. Simpson Dudley as a telephone voice-scambler.

  • He blinded me with Science!

  • very good, thanks, but you mean: Groucho Marx studios

    Cheers!!!

  • very good, thanks, but yu mean Groucho Marx studios

    Cheers!!!

  • what type of headset is that

  • haha he trys way too hard

  • Great video =] do I hear a little of Perry/Kingsley?

  • I WANT A VOCODER :(

  • @tobigama I have a Roland SVC-350 Vocoder in my bedroom with me...but she's not for sale!!!

  • Where i can buy it or use?

  • i wish you were my music teacher in HS

  • @remusjacobs he mine was lame and boring. he reminded me of squidward from spongebob.

  • i first read about the vocoder in MJ's autobiography. he said they used it for that background voice in PYT

  • 1:10 half-life?

  • Really stupid but at least he's happy.

  • im throwing away the vocoder that my dead grandma left me in her will.....after seeing this video

  • @1998CrownVictoria Please give it to me (unless it's a Roland SVC-350 since I already have that...or NOT a classic analog model)!!!

  • cool!!!

  • Dude, you look like you belong with Devo! : )

  • it makes a nerd into the coolest guy in the world

  • Clearly, a vocoder turns a heterosexual into a homosexual.

  • of course it's most famous use occured 31 years ago this past June in both Disneyland & Walt Disney World in the Main Street Electrical Parade

  • @Disneydanny Bode 7702 Vocoder!!!! However I'd say both the original-series BSG Cylon Centurions with the EMS Vocoder 2000 using a saxophone as the carrier-input, and Soundwave from 'The Transformers' G1 using the Roland VP-330 Vocoder Plus (Mk1/2?) are much more well-known. After them it would be Neil Young using the Moog 16-Channel MBV0 327A Vocoder.

  • gad elmaleh en parfait alchimiste

  • This is very entertaining.

  • Oh my god, I love you.

  • Your voice is like the exact same as Dan's from college humor :D

  • hahaha great :)

  • Fucking hell :D

  • OINGO BOINGO!!!!!!!!! DUDE!!!! i LOVE O The Outside awesome

  • Some funny stuff :)

  • did they use it in dr who ???

  • @destroyallhumans130 actually no, although the sounds are extremely similar. what they used in dr. who was called a ring modulator. it makes weird harmonics from your voice. ever heard a rock song where the guitar seems to "sing" like the lead singer somehow? thats a vocoder taking the shape of someones voice and filling it with the sound and pitch of a guitar on the carrier signal. ::phew:: i use both in the studio... i tried the RM and walked around saying "EXTERMINATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

  • @ancient561 thanks

  • fahh faahhhh fa funky townnnnnn...

  • What price can I expect to buy the same kind of vocoder as the one you have?

  • @Riggedmuffin some hardware ones can go around 200-400 but vintage may be different... theres also alot of plugins you can use with your workstation to do it digitally, like Waves Morphoder. im sure there's free ones out there too!

  • @ancient561 well, I'm looking for a good balance of cheap/quality. Got any suggestions?

  • @Riggedmuffin Generally between $500 - $1500 more or less (if you're lucky). But if it's less than $800 or even $1000 I'd think there must be something wrong with it. No one who knows classic vocoder like I do would ever even consider selling a mint one for under a thousand nowadays. $1200 is more likely, less means it's not fully-functional or the seller doesn't know it's true value.

  • @VoiceEncoder HOLY CRAP NEVERMIND.

  • your awesome. loved it.

  • nice video saw it in my related videos. :)

    nathan

  • hey where can i get the desktop matrix screen like on your comps...

you got me thinking about the vocoder.

i now have a microkorg XL

this was the first vocoder video that i saw in 2008

    thankyou.

  • LOL!

  • Dr. Presson rules!

  • shove a dick in your ass doc

  • @anditl21 YouTube can always be counted upon for elegant discourse!

  • @reichmarshall And what makes you think i give a shit weird ass

  • lol =)

  • amazing!!!

  • you're a mad scientist XD

  • I love the background music. Perrey-Kingsley rule. I have to say, I like old electronic music more than 80's-present electronic music.

  • :-)

  • lame but hilarious.

  • So is a vocoder the same thing as autotune? Or is that a different piece of equipment with a similar effect? A weird project band I like Alaska in Winter uses a TON of vocoder -cool tunes.

  • @phoenixicarus With a vocoder, you have to play the keyboard to get it to sound. Auto-Tune rounds the voice to the nearest note in a scale. Plus they sound different. Also, vocoders can be polyphonic, i.e. you can sound more than one note at a time. In my opinion, vocoders are cooler, but they're very different sounds, so look both of them up.

  • @phoenixicarus Auto-tune is also called a phase-vocoder.

  • Domo arigato Dr. Presson-o

  • Sick screensaver!

  • I'm assuming you could use it to a lesser extent on pop songs such as Telephone by Britney Spears.

  • @cybermatufia Cue the herd of rampant Kraftwerk fans to trample you to death!

  • @cybermatufia *TRAMPLES TO DEATH*
