in fact playstation3 had around 200 gflops of graphics power when it was released. Nvidia's (or ATI for the matter) high end cards were not as powerful back then. Even today many average pcs out there are less powerful than the play 3.

As for RSX, I've seen a whitepaper comparing some of NVIDIA processors a while ago (don't remember where, sorry). The G70 chip RSX uses has 24 pixel shaders that make 27 FLOPS per cycle, 8 vertex shaders that make 10 FLOPS per cycle, and is clocked at 550 MHz (550 million cycles per second). That makes (24*27+8*10) * 550 MHz = 400400 MFLOPS or 400.4 GFLOPS.
@essboarder23 Xenon cores are based on the exact same unit as Cell's PPE, so since it has three cores, that's 3 * 25.6 GFLOPS = 76.8 GFLOPS. As for Xenos, the only source of information I have about its FLOPS performance is Wikipedia. According to it, it's 48 unified shaders * 10 FLOPS per cycle * 500 MHz = 240 GFLOPS.
@NewLynxChannel And I've been looking more into the GPU, it says it can do 5 ALU operations per pipeline, per cycle for the 24 pixel shader pipelines. And it can do 2 ALU operations per pipeline, per cycle for the 8 vertex pipelines. And THEN it says 27 flops per pipeline, PER CYLE for the pixel shader pipelines. And 10 flops per pipeline, PER CYCLE for the vertex pipelines.
@essboarder23 As for Cell, it is common to see the 204.8 GFLOPS number, but most people forget that one of the seven SPEs is reserved for XMB and therefore does not contribute to performance in games.
As for the GPU, you should not multiply ALU operations and floating-point operations, they are not related that way. Each pixel shader either performs 27 floating-point operations OR operates as up to 5 ALUs.
Now that you mentioned, though, it seems like Sony did do this.

PS3 can over come physic complications if not for the cell chip. Its a very powerful machine and from reviews and countless video research on the new Cell Chip developed in Sony and Toshiba, its more superior to the Intel's and ADM Quad Core Processors (In Turbo Mode). The Gaming world has been set to a new level due to this chip. Thats why XBOX can't compete in raw power and performance that PS3 has brought to the table. ALONE it can process Graphics and Physics without a Graphics Card.
@ecclesiatesfour Cell isn't superior to Intel or AMD quad-cores. It isn't superior to their dual-cores either. It's a 2005 single-core chip based on IBM's long outdated Power Architecture. Its purpose was being used on servers and workstations, and the gaming world wasn't canged at all by this chip. Also, any CPU can process physics, and Cell can't process graphics without a graphics card, which is why Sony used a Cell and a RSX on the PS3 instead of two Cells (which would have been cheaper).
@mathhenr you sir are wrong....if you check the dev. diaries for Uncharted 2 they say that they used the cell to process motion blur,depth of field and some other things i cant remember(these are things a gpu normally does). This freed up some processing power from the rsx and allowed for higher quality models and such....so the cell CAN process graphics
@madlh24 Motion blur and depth of field are post-processing effects, not raster graphics. Those are simple operations the SPEs can do, since they are very similar to GPU shaders. For every other rendering process (rasterization, texturing, shading) you need a GPU because CPUs don't handle it.
Yeah I've checked that out, who knows how something like that would work on the PS3, if it's programmed for PCs it probably won't run very well on a PS3, especially if it's like that.
I still don't think it would run as well on a PS3, even if it was coded correctly to run on a PS3.
PS3's were powerful when they were released, but then the speed of both video cards and processors for PC's increased, so I believe PC has surpassed the power of a PS3, otherwise why would they choose not to have games take advantage of things such as Antialiasing higher than 2X, and Anisotropic FIltering higher than 4X's I believe.
I haven't really got myself more than a $10 mouse, so going from that to the one I want, the R.A.T 9 will be crazy, and I'll be getting a nice mouse pad too :-)

By the way, I just meant that a $300 PS3 versus a $600-$700 Card, and you just hook both up to a home theater you're going to get quite a lot more done with the PS3, with blue ray, hard drive, internet, RAM, CPU, controller.

I don't know, it has it written on the box and everything, some site said that it already unzips it so that it is the same HD sound but it won't say it is, that it'll send it as LPCM.
I don't even have an HD reciever, I just do Dolby DX 7.1, seems good.
I like how my laptop has full HD capabilites too, I did HDMI straight to a TV that had built in speakers and played games through it, and other stuff.

I don't think it does, I think the PS3 outputting TRUE HD is just a misconception, people hear the letters "HD" and assume that's the best you can get, then when you mention True HD, people are like "Yep, it's got HD"
@borlling look up the differences in GPUs and architecture, the xbox 360, on paper, has higher graphical capabilities, which is really what it is going to boil down to. we're seeing an influx in popularity in the ps3 currently, but i think towards the end of this generation of consoles lifespan the 360 will be more dominant because of the extra 50 MHz, free antialiasing, and potential ~200MB of GPU power it has over the ps3. it's win win though, because by then everyone will have both consoles.
The cell's architexture allows the SPE to be able to carry out graphical processes, some thing the xbox's is NOT able to do... and where do you get the extra 50 MHz from? The cell has 1 main core at 3.2 GHz, and then 7 "Subcores" running at 3.2 GHz... The xbox has 3 cores at 3.2 GHZ

Yea, but you forget one thing.... the cell is the powerhouse in the ps3, coupled with the xdr ram that runs at the same clock speed as the spus and main powerpc processor. this creates a very high polygon output compared to traditional means... check out the new GOWIII goeff keighley interview if you wanna see the results.
@borlling The PS3 Cell has an advantage over the Xbox 360 CPU in many cases (Not all cases), but the ATI video card in the 360 is better than the Nvidia in the PS3, especially considering that it came out over a year earlier. The memory design in the PS3 is also stupid. It should have been unified, or much bigger!
@chadheck96 physics takes a lot of processing power..which is why when you see people on youtube doing crysis demos...they actually use special parameters to render each frame and then turn those frames into an actual video...processing one frame at time and playing it back at 30 or 60 fps will make it look as if it were real time...2fps is pretty average lol....i get about 6-10 fps with a core i7 and 6 gb of ram

that's not true, more and more companies are releasing games for PC on something called "Steam" which basically prevents piracy, or at the very least makes it very hard. There still are many people supporting the gaming industry for PC, and many games that are released on Console are released on PC, and Vice Versa. Even some games ppl said wouldn't be on PC.

according to what sony told gamespot way back towards luanch time that the rsx gpu inside ps3 was more powerful then two geforce 6800 ultras and slightly more powerful then a single geforce 7800gtx as i can recall.
Im playing Burnout: Paradise the ultimate box On highest settings, 1080x800, highest shadows, details exc and Im getting 25-35 FPS on Windows 7 Ultimate.

cell is ment for supercomputing not the best CPU around. the cell does things differently, for example, it can act like a gpu and assist the gpu in rendering graphics..... i'd much rather have my graphics card render the graphics than the cell.

Larabee is a 32-core cpu, the ps3 has 8 core, running at 3.2 ghz per core, which is great, however the gpu is a nvidia rsx, which is a piece of junk by today's standards, so it basically limits the ps3's power by ALOT.

@essboarder23 Yes, of course. IBM documentation on Cell exaplains that the PPE, as well as each SPE, achieves a peak of 25.6 GFLOPS.
As for RSX, I've seen a whitepaper comparing some of NVIDIA processors a while ago (don't remember where, sorry). The G70 chip RSX uses has 24 pixel shaders that make 27 FLOPS per cycle, 8 vertex shaders that make 10 FLOPS per cycle, and is clocked at 550 MHz (550 million cycles per second). That makes (24*27+8*10) * 550 MHz = 400400 MFLOPS or 400.4 GFLOPS.

As for Xenos, the only source of information I have about its FLOPS performance is Wikipedia. According to it, it's 48 unified shaders * 10 FLOPS per cycle * 500 MHz = 240 GFLOPS.

And it can do 2 ALU operations per pipeline, per cycle for the 8 vertex pipelines. And THEN it says 27 flops per pipeline, PER CYLE for the pixel shader pipelines. And 10 flops per pipeline, PER CYCLE for the vertex pipelines.

@essboarder23 As for Cell, it is common to see the 204.8 GFLOPS number, but most people forget that one of the seven SPEs is reserved for XMB and therefore does not contribute to performance in games.
As for the GPU, you should not multiply ALU operations and floating-point operations, they are not related that way. Each pixel shader either performs 27 floating-point operations OR operates as up to 5 ALUs.
Now that you mentioned, though, it seems like Sony did do this.

PS3 can over come physic complications if not for the cell chip. Its a very powerful machine and from reviews and countless video research on the new Cell Chip developed in Sony and Toshiba, its more superior to the Intel's and ADM Quad Core Processors (In Turbo Mode). The Gaming world has been set to a new level due to this chip. Thats why XBOX can't compete in raw power and performance that PS3 has brought to the table. ALONE it can process Graphics and Physics without a Graphics Card.

@ecclesiatesfour Cell isn't superior to Intel or AMD quad-cores. It isn't superior to their dual-cores either. It's a 2005 single-core chip based on IBM's long outdated Power Architecture. Its purpose was being used on servers and workstations, and the gaming world wasn't canged at all by this chip. Also, any CPU can process physics, and Cell can't process graphics without a graphics card, which is why Sony used a Cell and a RSX on the PS3 instead of two Cells (which would have been cheaper).

@mathhenr you sir are wrong....if you check the dev. diaries for Uncharted 2 they say that they used the cell to process motion blur,depth of field and some other things i cant remember(these are things a gpu normally does). This freed up some processing power from the rsx and allowed for higher quality models and such....so the cell CAN process graphics

@madlh24 Motion blur and depth of field are post-processing effects, not raster graphics. Those are simple operations the SPEs can do, since they are very similar to GPU shaders. For every other rendering process (rasterization, texturing, shading) you need a GPU because CPUs don't handle it.

I still don't think it would run as well on a PS3, even if it was coded correctly to run on a PS3.
PS3's were powerful when they were released, but then the speed of both video cards and processors for PC's increased, so I believe PC has surpassed the power of a PS3, otherwise why would they choose not to have games take advantage of things such as Antialiasing higher than 2X, and Anisotropic FIltering higher than 4X's I believe.
I mean if it's so powerful, why not, right?

By the way, I just meant that a $300 PS3 versus a $600-$700 Card, and you just hook both up to a home theater you're going to get quite a lot more done with the PS3, with blue ray, hard drive, internet, RAM, CPU, controller.

also, with your BluRay player on a console, you can't get True Hi Def sound, but with PC, I can buy a sound card that will let me do that.
and I still consider all those other features I mentioned before worthy of the price increase.
and lets be fair, the price you can pay today for a nice gaming rig, just a few short years ago was the price of your average PC (About $1,500)

I don't know, it has it written on the box and everything, some site said that it already unzips it so that it is the same HD sound but it won't say it is, that it'll send it as LPCM.
I don't even have an HD reciever, I just do Dolby DX 7.1, seems good.
I like how my laptop has full HD capabilites too, I did HDMI straight to a TV that had built in speakers and played games through it, and other stuff.

@borlling look up the differences in GPUs and architecture, the xbox 360, on paper, has higher graphical capabilities, which is really what it is going to boil down to. we're seeing an influx in popularity in the ps3 currently, but i think towards the end of this generation of consoles lifespan the 360 will be more dominant because of the extra 50 MHz, free antialiasing, and potential ~200MB of GPU power it has over the ps3. it's win win though, because by then everyone will have both consoles.

The cell's architexture allows the SPE to be able to carry out graphical processes, some thing the xbox's is NOT able to do... and where do you get the extra 50 MHz from? The cell has 1 main core at 3.2 GHz, and then 7 "Subcores" running at 3.2 GHz... The xbox has 3 cores at 3.2 GHZ

Yea, but you forget one thing.... the cell is the powerhouse in the ps3, coupled with the xdr ram that runs at the same clock speed as the spus and main powerpc processor. this creates a very high polygon output compared to traditional means... check out the new GOWIII goeff keighley interview if you wanna see the results.

@borlling The PS3 Cell has an advantage over the Xbox 360 CPU in many cases (Not all cases), but the ATI video card in the 360 is better than the Nvidia in the PS3, especially considering that it came out over a year earlier. The memory design in the PS3 is also stupid. It should have been unified, or much bigger!

@chadheck96 physics takes a lot of processing power..which is why when you see people on youtube doing crysis demos...they actually use special parameters to render each frame and then turn those frames into an actual video...processing one frame at time and playing it back at 30 or 60 fps will make it look as if it were real time...2fps is pretty average lol....i get about 6-10 fps with a core i7 and 6 gb of ram

@sgtGrif, not to sound like an ass, but you have 6gb with a core i7? strange because i play on my buddies computer, and he built it himself around the core i7 and has it OC with 4gb of tri channel ram, and an ati radeon 5770 2gb gddr3. and crysis on full blast, does nothing what so ever to the computer, we average 30-40 fps on it. strange you only get 6-10 fps.

Grant it pc is upgradable which allows for the games to run extra smoother and look extra smoother but it's not a big noticeable difference from the consoles capabilities to run games smooth and look smooth.You don't nessarly need to own the other gaming platforms to know what your talking about that's a misguided view on your part nikndyay.

that's not true, more and more companies are releasing games for PC on something called "Steam" which basically prevents piracy, or at the very least makes it very hard. There still are many people supporting the gaming industry for PC, and many games that are released on Console are released on PC, and Vice Versa. Even some games ppl said wouldn't be on PC.

according to what sony told gamespot way back towards luanch time that the rsx gpu inside ps3 was more powerful then two geforce 6800 ultras and slightly more powerful then a single geforce 7800gtx as i can recall.

Im playing Burnout: Paradise the ultimate box On highest settings, 1080x800, highest shadows, details exc and Im getting 25-35 FPS on Windows 7 Ultimate.
Meaning the RSX isent bad...Never said it was though....
COD4 plays in medium-high at 40-60 FPS.
My CPU is AMD Athlon X2 (~2 CPUS) @ 2.0ghz.

cell is ment for supercomputing not the best CPU around. the cell does things differently, for example, it can act like a gpu and assist the gpu in rendering graphics..... i'd much rather have my graphics card render the graphics than the cell.
look at what cevat yerli said regarding the ps3 "the console version of the game (crysis 2) will be scaled down..." the PC will always be the best gaming platform. just look at the ati tech demo with the 20000 ping pong balls all processed by the pehnom

Larabee is a 32-core cpu, the ps3 has 8 core, running at 3.2 ghz per core, which is great, however the gpu is a nvidia rsx, which is a piece of junk by today's standards, so it basically limits the ps3's power by ALOT.
