To the lay person democracy means not being ruled by a dictator.

To a political student "democracy" means a form of democracy ie the form of the government the US democrats want as opposed to the Republicans, who want a different form of democracy. The question is whether Hitchens should have pitched to the level of the people who know this or those who don't on QT.

Whilst it is true that politicians cannot be trusted, that is due to the 3 party elite. This is why people need to stop voting for lab/con/dem. We need to vote for a new party that stands for the will of the people.

The Point he's making is that we're better off with a monarchy instead of an elected president who would be beholden to the very special interest groups: EG Bankers, Murdoch Press, Industrialists who fund there elections. A Cromwell wouldn't sweep them out of power, he'd keep them there.
