@DartmouthAlum96 FAA regulations _caused_ those wait times in the first place. Without the fed and those regulations, those times would be "regulated" by how people did business with them. If they meandered around, they'd lose business to other airlines, or even other airports. This incentivizes airlines and airports to make the process as efficient as they can in order to get the most business.
If anything, the govt is getting rewarded for the problem they inadvertently caused.

How would tarmac wait-times be regulated if it weren't for the fed? Should passengers who don't know each other, and may be stranded in strange cities, file class action lawsuits through private counsel? And if this were the case, wouldn't the lawyers just end up taking 33% of the money anyway? Also, who would pass the legislation which would enable the lawsuits if not the govt.?
The "thinking" in this video is simplistic at best.

@DartmouthAlum96 FAA regulations _caused_ those wait times in the first place. Without the fed and those regulations, those times would be "regulated" by how people did business with them. If they meandered around, they'd lose business to other airlines, or even other airports. This incentivizes airlines and airports to make the process as efficient as they can in order to get the most business.
If anything, the govt is getting rewarded for the problem they inadvertently caused.

@Altimadark In theory I understand what you're saying, but as a practical matter, I don't think it's reasonable to assume that the market itself can regulate tarmac wait-times. Needless to say, cross-country and inter-continental air travel is fraught with all sorts of potential problems which can leave passengers stranded for hours on a runway. Without broad-based federal legislation, how could individual travelers have any level of redress for excessive wait-times they experience?

The market is fully capable of forming its own, private regulators for those instances when broad-based regulation is desired. It's why nonprofits like Western Laboratories, Fish Legal, and Underwriters Laboratories exist. And none of them run off of taxpayer dollars.

@UtherPendragan Oh yeah. I work for Delta Airlines and when we where deciding what weather we wanted Janurary 11th of this year, we accidently put a hail too close to the time Flight 821 took off. Its our bad, we wanted to let the passengers off so they weren't cramped, but, you know, the rules WE made where no one is allowed off the plane.

So the government magnanimously makes a rule that airlines can be fined for having passengers sit on a tar mack. And people think, oh if it weren't for the government how else can industries be made to change? Or something similar.
So for 608 passengers, they got about $412 check in the mail, curtsey of such a wonderful government for filling out a few fine forms. Isn't that special?
If the govmint had to take a cut for its efforts, something modest like $50 out per person, maybe $100 tops.
