@malakia8080: Why won't you show some heart and say what you mean. There's nothing less credible than a spineless coward failing the courage of their own convictions. Can't you identify that "certain group" of people, or is your frontal lobe too overstimulated to distinguish between racist propaganda and historical facts? Check yourself. The world is a lot smaller, a lot harder, than it was mid 20th century. Your "group" could very well be the next target of fascist bigotry...
...don't get too upset...it's only a movie...an american movie made with money of certain group of people...portraying horrifying event of history...wait, look around you...
it seems we all miss the daily horrifying events, in certain parts of the world, even more disgusting...and guess who is "paying" .....you got it!
Please, use your reading capabilities before posting false assumptions. It's an european (french/british/german) production by an hungarian director.
You are right about what's going on around and on certain parts of the world and I agree that american dollars are not the solution for everything. I am German, but no one asked me where I wanted to be born so I always will be deeply thankful towards America to kick the shit out of the nazi-douche-bags.
@diggyu wtf is your lunatic insane degenerate lying azz talking about ? thats all we ever hear what state school or country did you grow up and live in where werent beaten down by white guilt and the horroe stories of the evil white man hunter enslaving and enslaving all in his path, but we didnt hear in school how ven today in your own lands not run by white devils you still same genecidal raping pillaging savages you were million yrs aqgo. u r an animal. you are idiot. you are liar.
@diggyu Racism and hatred is wrong from every angle, and to hate those who hate makes one no better than the haters. There is and always will be (until the end of time) evil in this world. Evil takes over the heart of the individual who allows it, regardless of so-called race. You and I are called to love and do good, even to our enemies. That's the only way the cycle of evil is broken. Slavery is evil, but no one race is entirely responsible for it. People are.
@jernov91 I think it was to hint that he was disgusted by Adolf and touching his hand. So he wished to discretely wipe his hand as soon as he could. Hense the handkerchief being passed between hands and moving it in the hand he shook Adolf with.
@LadyAllegra55 He is shaking hands with Goebbels not Hitler. The scene is from 1942, long before Germany's defeat was a foregone conclusion, so the moment as an added poignancy to it.
Enjoyable movie. Unfortunately there's nothing like a film about War to bring out the hate in people's comments. I think the point of this movie is to show any reasonable person could understand both sides of this coin. The outrage over the carnage thinking more should have been done, and the people that lived in fear everyday.
@rocknroll413 indeed hard to reconcile with either sides in this specific case.
hitlers religious institution proclaiming superior race and american/british religious institution racing to fulfil judeo-christian prophecies blur the lines much more.
the only winning argument in all these games in my opinion are such visions that of thomas jefferson and likes.
Great movie. To say that he was only trying to survive and to excuse him becasue he is an artist doesn't fly. He was a cultural leader in the Nazi Party....he is guilty. It is a good thing that he was forbidden from performing the US.
@islandfunhouse americans should be forbidden to be in any country, while they where fighting the nazi, back in the usa black where being quietly exterminated, lynched, condemn for DATING A WHITE WOMAN, do you know what white pigs...sorry, americans use to do to black men if they found him fucking a white pig bitch? they will cut his balls and dick off. then burn him alive...while the great KKK roam burning houses, and killing black kids and elders...BRAVO AMERICA
Maj.Steve Arnold,HATES Wilhelm, for his talent and brains, and all that he is not,and can never be,nor ever understand, like asking an auto mechanic,to do brain surgery. It just can't happen. He is an angry little stupid man,who gets pleasure out of belittleing a great artist of the time.Arnold acts like the SS,while questioning Wilhelm,Mr.Right,he wants his head.Wilhelm was just surviving,he was a renowned conductor, and was treated as such,HE was lucky, and hated for his luck by the envious .
This film is a defense of cowardliness and gross lack of public duty. This man knew he was one of the cultural heads of the Nazi party, he knew that, with his capitulation the Nazi's would gain further ground in the academia arena for which the party relied upon for support.
These people sought to destroy individual liberty in favor of socialism and central control, no matter the cost. I find no redeeming quality's in this film whatsoever.
@putittogether ...You've got balls, from where you sit.Public duty,is right after, staying alive.Do you know anybody who was there?I do.In the camps too.If you were there,as you are here, you would salute to those with power over you,and walk that walk.Keitel, sees criminals, bowing and shaking his hand,he was bending from a stage,he was surviving. As per your mouth,if it were you conducting, and Adolf walks by,what would YOU do?Tell him to eat sh!t,I doubt it.You got punk written all over you.
@BlueMoonLightDreams Well I appreciate your saying so, but would differ with you on that to the day I die. The performances in the movie are sterling. The topic is very illuminating about how we humans cop out from our values, be they political, religious, or just plain moral. Even deserves an Oscar in every category for that reason alone, imo.
@brainouty humm well said, still i think...this really was very good movie, but there are many more like this...to grant them such honor we will have so many with Oscars, and that no longer will be special :D
Getting an Oscar has no bearing on how good a movie or actors are anymore. It's all political. The Peoples Choice seems to be the most accurate of what we like. Most of the rest are actors telling each other how great each other is,,,,
This really is an amazing film, and as an artist myself, I totally understood where the Conductor was coming from; but on-the-other-hand, saw so much MaCartheyism on the part of the part of the Arny, I am sure that are many out there who would say I was Un-American, to which I would say, look in your own glass house. I will not be a spoiler here, but everybody should pay SPECIAL attention to the end of this film. It is something only artists so many times are forced to pull off.
this movie was amazing...i absolutly sloved it and i'm so glad i found it here on youtube. now i'm going to go on amazon and buy it for my personal Skarsgard collection *two thumbs up*
Few things bugged me. The one who spends so much time trying to nail Furtwangler seems like he's a little unbelievably overzealous (as in, why's he so bent on getting this guy?). And the video at the end is from a performance of the 9th, not the 5th. Woulda liked to see him in action a little more. But anyone who knows Furtwangler left us the most incredible recordings of so many symphonies will wanna see this for sure.
You must remember the general inthe begining of the film told the major Kietel to nail this bastard for his affiliation with the Nazis becasue the conductor was sucha popular and famous figure in Nazi Germany at that time.
On the contrary it is a dramatic depiction of true events at the end of WWII and a great service to another generation that has survived in a era of almost global peace... but not quite yet.
In the movie Furtwängler hangs his head in shame and says he regrets not running away in 1934. In reality he did just the opposite.
"[...] people never needed more, never yearned more to hear Beethoven and his message of freedom and human love, than precisely these Germans, who had to live under Himmlers terror[.] I do not regret having stayed with them."
I wish just one person working on this script had done a little research.
You have to believe that you must be gravely mistaken as this film was more accurate in every way and because of the cast invovled with the production each of these quality actors lived through these events as chiuldren or youngmen perhaps so they would know the difference between lies. One could ask you. Whose side are you on?
This is a very good movie. 2 thumbs up. I highly recommend it. Harvey Keitel and Birgit Minechmayr were excellent and Stellen Skarsgard was absolutely SUPERB. Got something to do? Forget about it. Watch this movie.
I used to take sides, but then I took an arrow to the knee.
