I believe the "error" by drummer Joe Butler was intentional at the beginning...look at how John Sebastian was looking at him as it happened, and then how the young women in the audience reacted.
@ChiroQuacker If you want to see them play and sing "live" check the Nashville Cats, Darling be home soon,& Daydream videos from the Ed Sullivan show.Granted in Nashville Cats, there is a recorded harmonica, but the rest of it is them really singing and really playing.
FINALLY a clip of the spoonful playing and NOT lip synching...
thanks for this clip...i can see that the drummer joe butler did not play on the recording...they must have used a session drummer...cause joe's playing and tempo is all over the place in this clip
Two of my friends picked up Zal hitchhiking in upstate N.Y. not long after he left the Spoonful. He sort of fell on hard times after his departure ...
It's actually not bad for a 60s mono recording for tv that has been rehashed for Youtube. The picture quality is good too. There are far worse vids of this vintage on Youtube.
Oh god, pass me a bucket..

What did Zal say at 0:05 that was so funny? I couldn't understand him.

They guy at 1:25 = bored out of his mind, can't wait to leave, surrounded by women he doesn't understand and music he hates.
Ah, heaven, in the 1960s.

If I'm not mistaken this clip is taken from a movie made in the fall of 1965 called the TAMI (Teen Awards for Music International) Show.

they play great "live"....they should have always played for real and never lip synched...would have given them even greater street cred....
it was hard finding a clip of them playing for real...and i am happy to see they were a fun live act...
it was tough back then...competing with the beatles, the stones, motown, the west coast bands..
by 1968 they were toast...now here comes the who with tommy and led zep and cream, hendrix
so bands like this got nailed...rascals too, mommas and poppas

Love it. NOT lip-synched. Saw them in concert in July 2011 and the original drummer now played the autoharp. Sorry I forget the band members names.
