  • Oh god, pass me a bucket..

  • What did Zal say at 0:05 that was so funny? I couldn't understand him.

  • 2 types of girls... the ones who danced, they put out... the ones who didn't, they missed the magic.

  • i think john sebastian was the first to wear wire rim glasses

  • LOL NOTHING HAS CHANGED!!!! The guys are just sitting there and looking around, while the girls are bouncing off the walls

  • #461

  • JOHN SEBASTIAN ---- WHAT A TALENTED GUY! WROTE THE SONGS, PLAYED THEM AND SUNG THEM. A genius.

  • Is the lead guitarist still with us ?

  • at 1:20 it looks like that chick is giving a hand job

  • The drummer's ride cymbal ends up in a wierd position at the end.

  • zal is a silly goose

  • The guy at 1:25 who wasn't paying attention doesn't believe in magic.

  • If I'm not mistaken ,,this video is playing ( too fast for original) version ,but the vid is great ,even for the fast world today ,thanks

  • They guy at 1:25 = bored out of his mind, can't wait to leave, surrounded by women he doesn't understand and music he hates.

    Ah, heaven, in the 1960s.

  • Can't get enough of this live version. Love that crazy outtake intro. Believe in the magic....

  • Beautiful sound of the autoharp.

  • Yes, you are right. This IS very good quality and it is better than many....no ALL, of the other clips for the Spoonful playing live. Thanks.

  • :) good song

  • i look at this audience and i see why they needed to start smokin' reefer ... got to calm down those hormones ... ha ha

  • Wow. Zolly invented the running man .

  • I believe the "error" by drummer Joe Butler was intentional at the beginning...look at how John Sebastian was looking at him as it happened, and then how the young women in the audience reacted.

  • If I'm not mistaken this clip is taken from a movie made in the fall of 1965 called the TAMI (Teen Awards for Music International) Show.

  • @XaurreauX No, it from the "follower up", "The Big T.N.T. Show.

  • Guild guitar and bass!

  • The new york beatles

  • @gittahfiend then who were the NY Stones..? The Rascals? yeah...:)

  • @GUIDOBRAT I didn't think about it ,but you may have hit it right on the nose

  • @ 15 seconds - The original moonwalk.

  • they play great "live"....they should have always played for real and never lip synched...would have given them even greater street cred....

it was hard finding a clip of them playing for real...and i am happy to see they were a fun live act...

it was tough back then...competing with the beatles, the stones, motown, the west coast bands..

by 1968 they were toast...now here comes the who with tommy and led zep and cream, hendrix

so bands like this got nailed...rascals too, mommas and poppas

  • @ChiroQuacker If you want to see them play and sing "live" check the Nashville Cats, Darling be home soon,& Daydream videos from the Ed Sullivan show.Granted in Nashville Cats, there is a recorded harmonica, but the rest of it is them really singing and really playing.

  • FINALLY a clip of the spoonful playing and NOT lip synching...

thanks for this clip...i can see that the drummer joe butler did not play on the recording...they must have used a session drummer...cause joe's playing and tempo is all over the place in this clip

  • Love it. NOT lip-synched. Saw them in concert in July 2011 and the original drummer now played the autoharp. Sorry I forget the band members names.

  • Two of my friends picked up Zal hitchhiking in upstate N.Y. not long after he left the Spoonful. He sort of fell on hard times after his departure ...

  • I think this was one of the first singles I ever bought. GODS, I miss these guys. Sebastian is doing okay, though...

  • That's an autoharp he's playing, not a "zither". Zal was a wack-job on every live film I've ever seen of them.

  • @bigmarty56

    I loved Zal!

  • Love the Spoonful! RIP ZAL!

  • Oceanbound - indeed. I wonder what the girl behind them and beside them were listening to at the time.

  • @suprtzar1 he was playing a zither

  • These boys were having such a good time here. And so did I, 46 years later. Nice work. Thankfully, someone kept the tapes.

  • Is this from The TAMI Show or The Big TNT Show?

  • Horrible sound quality, why would u claim it's good?

  • @Luizkey

It's actually not bad for a 60s mono recording for tv that has been rehashed for Youtube. The picture quality is good too. There are far worse vids of this vintage on Youtube.

  • Love John and his Zither!

  • The same chords as heat wave, according to John Sebastian.

  • I love the girls at 1:17 !!!! go girls !!

  • @oceanbound222 Cool 60's chicks or what!!!! Almost doing the first air guitar;-)

  • Sebastian making the autoharp even less popular than it already was.

  • The late Zal Yanovsky, the first clown prince of rock & roll. Rick Nielsen owes him a debt of gratitude.

  • Looks like Zally got himself a S200 Thunderbird Guild..Too Cool!

  • @blueticecho, It was an underrated guitar, methinks.

  • 1:20 lol fist pumping like a pro

  • @krazykelsey18 haha YES.

  • Zal was AWESOME

  • @scytherius90210

Personified 60's good-time rock for me.

  • @scytherius90210 I loved Zal. One of the truely great rock, pop and country guitarists and the greatest smile and personality. He was one of a kind.

  • what a great freaking song

  • autoharp ftw

  • great live version, funny start though ;-)

  • Yep, they were indeed magic. 5*

  • The Lovin' Spoonful made us believe in magic!
