haha my goldies are so tiny that i have to chop the peas into quarters and use tweezers to hand feed them whilst mushing them up just before they put it in their mouth... it takes hours
Yeah, they are. I only use real plants, and they take up nitrates and such, plus they give the fish a sense of cover. I've got a thick variety of vallis (not sure which, bought ages ago) that they don't eat and it grows well and easy, plus an amazon sword of some kind. I also have some oxygenator and other stem plants which the fish can graze on like the like to do.
Thank you. No, you don't need to boil them. I've NEVER boiled mine, just defrosted and peeled. They don't seem to like the skins, hence the peeling, just pinch out the soft cores.
And cool! I tried feeding my fish lettuce asmorning they dident touch it they swam over then left they dident touch it, is it usally a certain type of lettuce they like?
I love your little fish with the ywllow head and white body! How long have you had him/her from and whats his/her name?
Well, a pea is made up of the outer skin wrapped around two soft halves. It's these they eat. Pinch a pea and you'll see. My fish never use to like lettuce. Now they do. They like romanie leaves, you can get the anywhere. Get a veggie clip to hold the leaf in place on the side of the tank and they will graze it.
That fish was called sugar, and was a ranchu. Sadly, very very sadly, she got ill, didn't respond to treatment and died. :-(
@monkeydjinn Oh my gosh thats terrible im so sorry she was so cute!
Hehe my favourite is my black moor too!
Cool how often a week should you feed them vegetables? I fed mine peas earlier and they went nuts now they seem much more hyper and fast is that good?
@MrRawrllyX Yeah, was a bit gutted. Plus it now means I'm without a ranchu. For now at least..
You can feed them vegetables often. They do better on a vegetable diet. I had trouble with fish health when I first started, no idea why, but then I learn that the fish food isn't really all that good for them - lots of fat and protein in it, which causes constipation and ill health.
@MrRawrllyX And fancies, due to their body shapes, can get blocked. So high fibre food is good. Vegggies daily for mine. I do use fish food - pellets - to supplement and balance the diet, but not as the main part of the diet.
Also, oats are good. High fibre. and they also help to develop the deep bodyshape. Breeders use them. Plus the fish LOVE them.
As with all foods, remove anytihng not eaten within a few minutes to save fouling the water. Little and often is the key.
I feed mine flakes all the time and now im gunna give them peas for a treat im going to try broccoli but wont it cloud up your water? I have a black moor and 2 orandas i think there orandas what diet do you think i should give them, there all still very small
@MrRawrllyX Be sure to read that article i linked you, very useful. I'd use the flake as a treat, and the veggies as the main diet. Peas, lettuce, broccoli tips, chopped blanched cucumber, defrosted sweetcorn. Try different thins, see what yours like. It won't cloud the water if you don't leave it in for long. Remove what they don't eat. And anything new you are trying out, just use a tiny bit first and see if they like it.
@monkeydjinn Ok cool I can honestly say they love peas haha,
How many times a week should you give them veggies?
I tried Iceberg shredded lettuce but they hated it they dident touch it.
Veggies are much bigger than flakes and people say you give one flake per fish and they dont need no bigger than there eye pupil when veggies are much bigger or is that just a rumour?
And I might give them peas again today or shouldent I ?
Hello. No, I never have. All I do is let them defrost (I use everday frozen peas) and then remove the skins. My fish don't seem to like the skins, and they float anyway. It's the fleshy middles they like and as these sink, it's easy for them to get them all, which makes for a cleaner tank.
Hi there i am interested on adding peas as a part of my goldfish's diet, but they are quite small like baby size would it be safe to feed them peas as well?
Hello Soul. Yes of course. How small are they? I've got a couple of baby fish (about two months old and about 1.5cm long who are being fed on baby oats and baby fish food). As long as the peas are chopped up small enough for them to get into their mouths, then I don't see a problem. perhaps take the skins off first and just let them have the soft inner bits. And remember to remove anything uneaten after a couple of minutes. Small and often is the way to go.
