02' z28 .Just starting to get that noise myself. I have changed the rear end fluid anywhere between every 30 and 50k like Gm recommends. I now have 121k approx. It started somwhere in the 120k range. repair said it was the pinion bearings like cashion623 said. it may last a while since they changed the fluid with synthetic and I believe he said they put in a noise additive along with the limited slip additive It is quieter now but for how long? they said cost + 10% in parts was $800 plus labor?
this is happening to my LS1 02 also. GM made week rear axles, that tend to "shread" in a why. I am in the process of replacing them with high quality axles. - The "shreading" creates movement, making the sound and also runing the bearings.

Exact same noise on my car. Any idea what caused it?

I have the same noise on my 98 Firebird. Were you able to figure out what the problem is on yours? On mine I think its the pinion bearings.
