Amazing! One of my favorite ballet dancer's (Baryshnikov) dancing to one of my favorite composer's (Rachmaninoff) & one of my favorite pieces. Pas de deux's are my favorite also. Sigh...I am happy. :)
Interesting piece of footage and amazing the number of people that commented that they were there. I remember reading somewhere that this piece was arguably the best that was ever set on Baryshnikov. I, too, would love to see the entire piece with him in it.
Never thought I'd ever see this -- fantastic! And one of hte greatest things of Collier's ever put on film. they're both glorious in this, but she's -- well, we NEVER see her look like THIS!
Tetsuya Kumakawa recorded the whole ballet with his own company in 2006 or so. He does a decent job with the pyrotechnics but it lacks a whole lot of flavor, as usual.
Yes, this was recorded and broadcast on that night, but Ashton only allowed the pas de deux to be shown (quite understandable for a brand new work).
I was told that the whole ballet would be shown after the Queen Mum died, but this never happened, so whether the Beeb still have it is anyone's guess.
I too prefer this setting - the style and colour of the set match the delicacy of the chroeography.
I was there that night - a fabulous gala and the house was so beautifully decorated. I think there was a rather odd tribute programme on BBC, which showed Mamzelle Angot, and then the bows after Rhapsody and the singing to HMQM - this I had from my relatives watching on TV! Certainly the whole of Rhapsody was filmed - its interesting to see it as the pas de deux was changed a little after the premier. Collier is as lovely as I recall and the original sets certainly outshine the current ones
Whoever owing the original tape of this must do a restoring to make it available on DVD. I would be first in the line to buy it. Just perfect.
Thanks for sharing!

lovely, although the dodgy colour on the recording makes it look like they both recently died, which is distracting... they are blue!

@vielsu Yes, sorry about that - I wish I (or someone else) had a better copy but this is all I've got

@quillerpen That's ok, it's not your fault! They still look magnificent.

Beautiful post with a Apollonian Misha, but for true rapture it needed Gelsey Kirkland.

I was also lucky enough to be there that night - and what a night!
This pas de deux is, and was, absolutely wonderful.
