i have a common snapper like him. he's nearlly that size in our 120 gallon tank. he's just the cutest guy :) to think fit in the palm of my hand when we found him...
they do get alot larger then that were ever they live....it depends on what kills them that will prevent there growth...Why did u move him with a shovel????? should have used ur hands
@ryanwood9932 - First of all, we were VERY careful not to hurt him when we moved him with the shovel. Second of all, I wouldn't advise anyone to pick up a snapping turtle of any size with their bare hands (not if you value your fingers) and third of all, turtles carry all sorts of bacteria on their bodies (like salmonella) that can make a human very sick.
That is not the cutest turtle I have seen...Looks like a lump of mud lying there. It looked old and tired, poor thing. I have a red eared slider turtle, they are quicker and cuter =)
lol thats just a baby at my cottage in kanora, ontario, canada they grow the size of a car door lol. and from that day i seen it i never went swiming in that lake agen lol.
He's huge! Down here they are almost always near or in water. Wonder where he came from. Glad you didn't get too close, they can take a finger clean off!
There is a lake behind my house. The lake is not all that close and down a pretty steep hill. That turtle really put some time and effort into putting himself on my front step! I knew not to get my hands near him, but I really didn't expect him to leap at me! Yeah, somebody told me these turtles eat ducks. That is not a pretty picture....lol!
Ah, what a GREAT video! How in the WORLD did that turtle manage to CLIMB onto that step of yours?! Almost kinda looks like someone PLACED him there-LOL!
I honestly do not know how(or why)he got there in front of my door. My husband found it there on the step when he came home. I wish I had been able to video him trying to climb that step. It had to have been pretty tough for him to get up there.
I would GUESS that it would be a TOUGH step for a turtle to tackle--TOUGH GUY :D I think that he wants to get inside to terrorize your dog-LOL :) BTW, I like your vids--I saw the one vs/ Solomon--the guy is NUTS :(
loved the voice & comments you gave him. my sister has to have snappers removed from her pond periodically because they kill all her ducks. they are mean and fast when they want to be.
That was the biggest turtle I have ever found. Today, I found where he had been sitting in some mud near my house. The ground was dug up and rough. Is this the time of year when they lay eggs? (It would be so cool to see some hatch out!)
My dog, Sam is rather goofy :). He is part carin terrier and part rat terrier. He is EXTREMELY protective of me. I think he was worried that the turtle was going to hurt me somehow.
Wow...I hope the turtle did lay eggs. Maybe I should go put a little fence around that spot so no one walks on it and raccoons would love to eat those eggs...I'll keep an eye on it. Thanks!
Great video. I love snapping turtles. I don't think he'll want much to do with those carrots. Do a youtube search for snapping turtle eating and watch what you find. They are truly fascinating creatures.
wow that was a big turtle I think he was old. I am so glad he went on his was free to live another day without harm. Somtimes they wonder out in the road and that is sad when they get run over and they have lived so long. Great footage thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it. He's the one who found me, haha! I still cannot figure out why he wanted to put himself in front of my door. (Maybe he was looking in the window and harrassing my dog?) I know what you mean about them wandering into the road. I have stopped my car many times to move a turtle out of the road.
I looked it up and he is a snapping turtle. That is why he lunged at me when we were trying to move him, he was trying to snap me. What I read said they have short tempers. Yeah, this guy was grumpy.
Oh no no no! He went right back to the lake behind our house. That's what everyone wants, a pet turtle that might eat your dog when you're not looking....
He looked like he actually enjoyed that little shovel ride =)

Where I live, this is about as big as they get.
I cannot imagine a turtle as big as a car door! No...I don't think I would get in that lake. They are meat eaters.

I have no clue. It had to be quite a struggle for him. I wish I could have videoed him trying to get up there.
What did he want?!? Potatoes??? lol

I know! I can't imagine eating that thing. Yuck!
Just curious about something, how do people who eat turtles get the shell off? A crowbar?
Just thinking about doing that grosses me out.

Nah, he left the carrots. I read what they eat. How could that tank of a thing move fast enough to catch birds, rodents or frogs? I can't imagine.

NewWarriorMan 3 years ago
Yeah, I wonder how old he was? I have never found a turtle that big.
MyRealityBytes 3 years ago
Big Old turtle, but I read somewhere if you count the squares on the underside of shell, it will tell you how old it is.
abbyroadme 3 years ago
That's cool - I have never heard that. But There is no way I would have tried to do that with that big guy!
MyRealityBytes 3 years ago
Yeah, he is huge!! I remember reading that when I did a report on turtles when I was a kid.
abbyroadme 3 years ago
I hope he comes to visit again. But I can't figure out why he was there at my door...it was like he wanted to come in!
MyRealityBytes 3 years ago
