omg, cactusjuice and downeclipse are absolutely right. these hammer on's and pull off's is actually the way to play the cello, he's just pressing his fingers with more power. there's no point of doing these clown things with a bow instrument. what a clown...
Wow..... I've played cello now for 6 years and this guy is clueless to what he's talking about. What he's doing is called slurred notes just because he isn't changing bows
It's called a slur you retard. ExpertVillage, for the love of god, please either remove this video or remake it being done correctly and properly referred to. On cello, or any orchestral string instrument for that matter, there is no such thing as a hammer on or a pull off.
Pretty much haha whatever you do, don't use expert village to learn. They have very few videos that may actually be beneficial to you. My recommendation - find a cello teacher.
EVERYONE. do not listen to this guy. he is showing you how to do something you do not do on a cello. ev should get this guy off their channel. the only thing you can do on a cello like this is a slur. and this guy is using bad technique too.
Hilariously inexpert, i'm afraid. Do not take cello tuition from this guy. He MAY be a good guitar player but, as a cellist, he is passing on a multitude of atrociously bad habits to anyone who's prepared to watch/listen. Highly entertaining though ;)
There seems to be some confusion here over "Slurs" and "Slides".
A Slur is playing more than one note within a given bow stroke.
A Slide is a connected change from one note to another without a break between the two, ie the finger "slides" from one to the other without a break. It is also called Portamento.
As a cellist who plays bass guitar recreationally, I agree that the hammer on/pull off terminology is for guitars and irrelevant with a bow, as cactusjuice5 mentioned. Furthermore there is the danger of overdoing it, i.e. hammering or plucking every single note causing disruptions to the melodic line.
Expertvillage should pull this pretender's videos off the channel.
I am not the worlds greatest cellist, but this guy is clueless. He is a guitarist who taught himself how to play cello (poorly). When you dont have a bow (ie guitar) you can do a sort of left hand pizz to get a bit more legato. That is a hammer on / pull off. But with a bow this is irrelevant.
@cactusjuice5 I'm a guitarist/bassist moving into the cello. I'm very inexperienced as far as the cello goes and according to your opinion this guy isn't reliable for me to learn from. I find him easier to understand since I'm transferring from the guitar into Cello as he obviously has(Or at least strongly seems to have) Where do you suggest I learn from?
People! This guy can't play cello at all! Maybe he can...but with a horrible technique. And now he is learning other people how to play horrible...I love this guy! Now I can play horrible tooooo! If you take the telephone right now and call 911 you get a "meet and great" with this idiot!!!
You should know that when you're not vibrating with your third finger, you let the first and the second ones put on the string. I used to play as good as you when I was 9 and I'm 18 now. I've always learned with a teacher and currently, I can play the saint-saens and elgar cello concertos, the Bach suites, the Fauré élégie, the arpeggione sonata and so many other opus. But I know I'm not good enought to teach cello. Don't give up but you've to learn before teaching
Astonishing, what the hell is this really all about? I've never heard of these terms before. All he is doing is demonstrating "slurred" bowing and "detached" bowing with a sort of articulated left-hand movement to help the string respond to the change.
Listen I appreciate you showing us some lessons, and ideas. Helps a lot

I think he doesn't call it a slur because a slur can also be a slide.

wow... look at his fingers! You are supposed to leave your fingers ON the finger bored.... not fling them up in the air 5 feet...
