  • Oh my gosh! This is my recording! I got my computer stolen so I'm so glad someone has it out there!!! Kick ass drum corps year, by the way. I marched the next season.

  • We are playing this in our high school band, and I talked my band director into screaming the AHH! transition (: Gonna be a hell of a year.

  • Win.

  • Sorry ran out of posting room. For a better comparison google Peter Bond on G and Bb .

  • @mellosrock

What I am referring to is the ease of hitting high notes, as was asked previously. A concert Bb, would be a C for trumpets, or an Eb above that for a soprano bugle. All these require the same tension in the inner and outer embochure, and the same vibration to produce sound. So when playing written notes, it is easier to hit a written high C on bugle than a C on trumpet.

  • ahh that should suggest that Anakin will become

  • its too top heavy, but a great performance!!!!!

  • Gino Cipriani is freakin amazing!!!!

  • When I lose my virginity, I want it timed so that 0:50 to 0:56 is playing the moment I orgasm.

  • Oh. My. Friggen. Gosh. That was amazing. I started playing trumpet as a sophomore in high school. I am now a freshman in college and can regularly blast a d above high c and have hit a double g a few times. Is there any hope of me being able to scream like these guys can?

  • @Cj12345675 Yes, practice, these guys are on G horns which I believe is harder to get in that upper range.

  • @kevinbs05

Actually its easier to hit the high notes on G bugles. The horn is pitched a step and a half lower than a normal horn, therefore playing a high C on soprano bugle would be the same as an A below that on a B flat trumpet.

Holding down the 3rd valve on a concert trumpet/bartone/tuba can give you an idea of what it is like.

  • @proghousedj Oh, I stand corrected, forgive me I was playing the baritone on a G so it was just an assumption that it would be harder. Thanks for the information, fortunately in today's day and age its a mistake that wouldn't be to big of an impact due to the majority of corps jr and sr marching Bb's. Again proghousedj I appreciate the information.

  • @proghousedj Actually that is incorrect. The higher you go on any brass instrument the partials get closer and closer. Playing the relative concert pitch on a Bb vs G the G is WAY harder to tune in the upper register.

  • @mellosrock

Tuning has nothing to do with the ease of hitting high notes. The lips buzz at the same frequency to produce the same pitch, regardless of how close the partials are together. By your reasoning, hitting a top of the line G on french horn is harder than hitting an F above a high C on trumpet, since the partials and tuning on horn are so different.

  • @proghousedj interesting, so in your reasoning, there are no resonance point on the brass instrument itself..which BTW defies logic, physics and design. I think what you are saying is that it's no harder..what I am saying is that physics tell a different reality. As for your french horn analogy, since I actually played in in DCI before mello, the French Horn in G starts in the second octave..and it's a beast to begin with.

  • @mellosrock The resonant frequency has little to do with anything. Most instruments are designed to not resonate on any certain pitch, which is of course impossible due to physics, but largely effective, for example, my Bb bass trombone resonates at the F# below middle C, where the bell will vibrate a little more than normal.

  • there best show

  • Jizz. In. Pants.

  • I think that just stopped my heart from beating

    Pure....fucking....power!

    THE POWER OF G!!!

  • Why oh why did they switch to Bb...man what a loss.

  • mmmmmm......G's

  • 1:07 Nothing like the sounds of summer crickets chirping in the loud absence of sound following an impact section done by a big brass line...

    Drums and Bugles Rule

  • haha 0:44 AHHHH!

  • I LOVE the sound of unison tuning slides clicking... 0:33

  • orgasm

  • Why change to B flats, when you could get a sound like that from bugles? Will never understand.

  • I agree. I know it makes it easy for band vets to play B flats. But this is BD ...elite players, elite corps bring the G's back.

  • "AH!!"

    *power chord facemelting commences*

    best warmup ever.

  • by far my favorite thing played by any brass section ever.

  • love the hangover at 1:05 ish

  • me too :-D I play lead marching and hangovers are the worst thing I hate in so many different things but it fits this piece soooooo well

  • @BalickyBone One of the sweetest I had ever heard recorded

  • @BalickyBone The line was great that year, but they also had some sweet sops that year.

  • love the unison clicks of the tuning slides. . . beautiful

  • My trumpet coach for marching band was in Blue Devils in 1999, and he said that Geno, one of the brass coaches, pulled out on of the guys in the hornline so he could listen. He then yelled "AHH" and at the loud part he actually peed his pants because of how awesome it was.

  • Blue Devils define DCI

  • And that "AHH" transition thing makes this the best thing ever played by anyone. Ever. lol

  • This and across the stars from 2002 give me goosebumps everytime. :0

  • AAAHHH!!! I didn't know :52 was coming. Then right back @ 1:06??! Crazy.

  • this made me jizz

  • they should bring this back

  • omg freakin chill bumps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This warmup makes me get chills every time : D

  • it wasn't a trumpet, they were still on Gs in 99

  • dont u love when the lead trumpet holds his note a little longer so everyone can hear how high it is? its ok we all do it

  • Don't know why, but I've never liked that.

  • It's stylistically correct since they play a lot of jazz and that's part of jazz, so they can do that.

  • I played three years of lead trumpet in jazz and I usually heard nothing but criticism from my director. Well worth it of course to have everyone hear your scream =p

  • well, I think it's more like the kind of jazz that you hear in the nightclubs. Not the jazz you play in school.

  • heh, you've obviously never heard what parts of your anatomy Frank T Williams or Robert W Smith would threaten to remove if we "hung over" deliberately.... :)

  • I play quads, but Damn! That is amazing.

  • i wish i was there to hear that..

  • That is INSANE!

  • I wish I could stand in front of that!

  • i would give anything to play with them

  • i'm a drummer but...thats amazing

  • Being a brass player, I just came. =]

  • This makes me happy

  • Goodness!!

  • any one else in love with that trumpet lick at 51-55

  • MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

  • i wish i had the fuckin music for the lead part oh man. by the way GO PHANTOM!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Hmmm...wrong corps =P

  • its the only corps that can sound like that.

And play as strong like that.

  • I was responding to the guy saying "Bluuuueee"

"Bloo" is the Bluecoats. BD has no such call

  • Wow... You should stop to think sometimes,

  • bahahahahahaha.

  • Yeah man I wish I can play trumpet like that.

  • eeigjklqfjdvil;f

    gosh!!!!

    omg at 0:45

    its amazing amzing amazing amazing..

that high note the trumpets play..

    my gosh its whoa!!

  • the mello part a 20 secs is coooooooooooooooool!

  • What the hell is that mello rip doing at the :56 mark? Doesn't fit at all?

  • Just appreciate the amazingness of the music!

  • are you talking about the person on the recording going "whooo!"?

  • dude this is so fuckin dope. we're doing this (but a little less corpsgasmic) for our 60 second warm up, at least we want to.

  • god this gave me goosebumps...i cant wait to see them in san antonio

  • DAYUM blue devils are amazing whether they are in g bugle OR B

  • OR Bb =P

  • this has 20,000 views. ive probably listened to my own recording of this that many times lol

  • i prefer Bbs over Gs. Ive played on both once with the statesmen on Gs and then with the Rochester crusaders on Bbs. maybe its because ive been playing on a Bb since i started.

  • Is there a "professional" recording of this warm-up?

  • There is a pro recording on the 1999 blue devils cd but it's a preseason recording. This recording was near the end of the season or maybe midseason. The cd recording isn't as good as this one because of how much the sound quality of a drum corps hornline matures throughout the season........big difference.

  • thxs miles211 - Props for BD hornline to have a great sound through a "non-studio" recording device... those are the best recordings (ie. lot tapes, judges tapes, etc . . . ) :)

  • I still prefer the old G bugles- maybe the quality is better now, but the first Bb's were not great

  • not only that, but Bb horns have a completely different sound. The G sound is so much more... meaty.

  • I have a better recording of this, message me and I'll e-mail it to you.

  • that makes my nipples stiff.

  • is that gino with the 'ahh' before the first impact?

  • Yes

  • usually, if there is no one yelling, you can here the whole corps breathing before this big hit, it sounds like a jet engine or something

  • good god. I want that.

  • Damn, why hasn't anyone done a Star Wars show yet?

  • Freelancers did the Music of John Williams in 88 and 89 (Finalist in 89) We did selections from ET, Empire of The Sun, Return of The Jedi, The Empire Strikes Back and Indiana Jones in 1990. The problem is that the royalties for the use of John Williams music, specifically the Star Wars stuff is astronomically high. It is not that JW is an arse, it's just that he is very particular about who performs his music publically. Hope that helps.

  • From what I remember we did not get the rights for this song either, we just did it.. and that JW wasn't too happy once he found out.. I forget exactly.. it's been awhile.

  • no....blue devils didnt go Bb until at least 2001, possibly 2002

  • Blue Devils and The Cadets were the only 2 corps to switch the first year Bb's became legal, in 2000.

  • Can I have the score, the mp3, and just the "AHHHHHH" for an alarm ringtone?! Man my skin crawl. Beautiful!!!

  • hell yea this was back when G's were still in!!

  • I'm pretty sure G bugles were switched out in around 1998... but I could be wrong.

  • Wrong...... 1999 was the last year of the G Bugle for BD and the Cadets. Can't you tell the difference by the sound quality?

  • I have this on a cd from the blue devils from years ago. that shit sounds great. i wish when i was in high school my hornline played. we had the sound for it, but not many of the trumpets has the high range for it.

  • WOW!!!!

  • I have to change my pants. I just had a corpsgasm.

  • lol...they did the thing with great big ass huh mann

  • lol. i had one of those once but it was during a corpsgy.

  • you wouldn't even need the movie if the soundtrack sounded like that!

  • I wish the orchestras in the movies sounded like that, would have been sooo much better. Except for the bad acting. Ahem.

  • This was one of my favorite DCI clips back in high school, I liked it so much I transcribed it, unfortunately I've never convinced a group to play it...

  • omg he kills that

  • um, heah..........I'm still wet.........

  • LOL...not many people will get that. It was loud and clear on DCI 1992 though =)

  • Christ. That sop hanger is just... Gawd. :-D

  • that was probably jeff lynn.. maybe scott dean but i think it was jeff

  • Comment removed

  • i dont know why i said scott.. scott wasnt even there in 99. brain fart. your right it was either brad or jeff. is this brandon?

  • this one made me yell Jesus out loud at the end..lol

  • Wow that was just ignorant. I love it!

  • WOW!!!

    THATS WHY BD IS AWSOME!!!

  • that note makes it BD. sick!

  • the only bad thing about marching BD that year.. was i never got to hear it from the audience :(

  • If you dont like the high notes, too bad! I did it everytime! HAHA! Those were good times man!

  • ......right on,,,,,people join BD soprano line to scream, and to be part of the best brass line in the world........."epic" chords can still be boring, but when you put a double G on top..............sort of makes everyone else look like prudes.

  • i like the light saber noise lol great.

  • Duel of the Fates is on the 1998 Rhythms at the edge of time cd. Sick

  • rhtyhms was 99... 1 year off ;)

  • So I got the publish year wrong. Sue me.

  • i would but ill forgive you this one time :)

  • Regardless, it's a badass album and I can't find it in the BD store, so I feel fortunate to own it and listen to One Hand One Heart pretty much once a day.

  • thats very true. i have a few other recordings of it if youd like it

  • Hehe. I think I am good on that year. I got some personal footage of BD at a local high school. That was the first year I followed BD all season.

  • heck yes

  • not a fan of that high note you mean?!? That's SIGNATURE BD man

  • nice,love it alot

  • Officially the coolest video on YouTube. The Blue Devils and Star Wars in the same place. Awesome.

  • I had the pleasure of standing in the middle of this while it was recorded. My ears rang for 2 days.

  • wow! you really are lucky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
