def one of the best parts of the movie. being a blonde girl from kansas city, this scene mesmerizes me, and yes, I have used the "....then we should make this count" line once or twice ;) love this movie; thx 4 posting!
that blond sure is adorable - I too had a crush on her when I first saw it as a kid. does anybody know the name of the actress who played her? after all, someone was rotoscoped there, right?
One of my favorite alltime films, such a relateable story for anyone whos travel down their own path and had their own experiences, canned corned candy corn popcorn cracker jacks your the prize in my box and my box is this country
This was my favorite film for a long time. I actually had a crush on that blonde haired girl as a kid and almost cried at the end when I finally figured everything out. I've never found the film in the video store.
This movie changed my life. I've had many nights looking at the stars wondering what to do with my life and if i was much more. As an ex-drug user, and an ex-drifter, i can relate.
Now that I know that I am not the only person out there who knows and loves this film.....I always wondered WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED to Tony at the end of his "story arc"? He just drifted away.....where did he score the package to have the black kid sent back to Pete???Surely not with the pawned guitar.....The scene with Tony and Pete on the bench with the harmonica is one of the most touching scenes in the film, yet it is left vague....Can anyone reading this post elaborate on it????????
Not really - a lot of the dialogue was re-written, the storyline was re-worked, and several characters were left out or amalgamated with other characters.
The scene hits home for me. Because it reminds me of my life. Being at a crossroad. How one decision can change your life forever. Had he stayed with the girl, maybe his life would have been wonderful, but he ends up going down the wrong path. Although unknown to him. His choices actually do help influence that boy who'll grow up to write an amazing song.
The actor who plays Tony is in the film 'AMERICAN ME' He's a junkie in jail. He's seen a bit through out the film here and there, but he has one prominent scene where he's begging to Edward James Olmos character. He's got long grey hair. You'll reconize him the moment he opens his mouth. He acts Just like Tony in this film when he's desperate.
I *finally picked up the DVD after years of thinking about it, and you're right-- this scene is great. Another one I like is the short scene in the farmhouse during WW2, because of the tension and the character's generosity (knowing there's NO way he'll avoid getting killed but giving the Nazi one last gift).
This is one of my all-time favorite movies, mainly because of the amazing soundtrack, featuring nearly fifty popular songs that span 1930 to 1980. The soundtrack was never released on CD because the cost for licensing would be prohibitive, in the millions, according to director Ralph Bashki. There was, however, a ten track vinyl release.
Louis Zingarelli, who designed the characters in THE CHIPMUNK ADVENTURE, STARCHASER: THE LEGEND OF ORIN, TITAN A.E., and the characters Lonette and Holli Would from COOL WORLD, also designed the characters in AMERICAN POP.
This is hand sown the best movie ihave ever seen the dialog is so rich and evey single character is so amazing every time i watch this movie it triggers a trauma I fell such a conection to Tony

I always thought he stole the package and was eventually killed by whoever he stole it from, but it's just a theory.

Raulph Bakshi directed this movie? I didn't know that.

This movie has pretty good animation!
GOTHMIDNIGHTMERMAID 4 years ago
It's a technique called 'rotoscoping,' whereby live actors are animated over.
PartisanFighter65 4 years ago
Just like on the movie's: "The Waking Life" & the 1930's animated Fliesher Bros. movie: Gulliver's Travels.
GOTHMIDNIGHTMERMAID 4 years ago
Yes, and Ralph Bakshi's "Lord of the Rings."
PartisanFighter65 4 years ago
I never saw the animated Lord of the rings.
GOTHMIDNIGHTMERMAID 4 years ago
It was decent, but it didn't really hold true to the story, and ended up confusing most critics and viewers. Brilliant animation, though.
PartisanFighter65 4 years ago 3
It wasn't true to the book series?
GOTHMIDNIGHTMERMAID 4 years ago
Not really - a lot of the dialogue was re-written, the storyline was re-worked, and several characters were left out or amalgamated with other characters.
PartisanFighter65 4 years ago
So the story was changed allot
GOTHMIDNIGHTMERMAID 4 years ago
No, the story was left largely intact, but Bakshi, for lack of a better term, fucked around with it.
PartisanFighter65 4 years ago
I've seen this same scene without the hat.

Thanks for posting this. Why isn't there more american animation like this? In fact, when and what was Bakshi's last animated movie?

Unfortunately this was one of the movies that could have been better. This movie had so much potential. But it's still pretty good.
abmangaka 4 years ago
yes, it lapsed a little bit, especially near the end, but the basic story line and much of the writing was pretty good.
