Kirch's "Evolution of the Polynesian Chiefdoms" has an excellent section about Rapa Nui.

A race of people, which would be considered by many industrial peoples todays as "primitive", the kind Hollywood would stereotypically portray as "in tune with nature" and that sort of thin for pro-environmental moviesg. And yet they used up their environment and its resources just as damningly as the rest of us.

SOUTH AMERICAN ORIGINS:
1) The faces on the "statues" look just like the art style of neighboring South American civilizations.
2) Similar art sculptures are in Western Mexico where we know there was contact with Ecuador & Peru. The Purepecha are very different from the other Mesoamerican civilizations and languages.
3) The pre-Inca civilizations of Peru had the knowledge of how to move massive stones (e.g. their pyramids).
4) The sweet potato (kumara) of polynesia comes from South America.
