  • this is enchanting

  • It also appears a couple of times in the movie itself. Anyone?

  • Does anyone know how to find the tune at the beginning of the dvd (not the film)

When the screen is at "play, scenes, etc" there's an upbeat tune which i can't find here. Does anyone know what I'm talking about??

  • what is the name of the song

  • Why the hell a movie so awesome like this has so much bad critic???

  • Its been bugging me for years but does anyone know what the guy in the background says at 42 seconds ? One of the best films ive seen in the last ten years.

  • @basher27 "I'm a man of science, I just don't believe that mumbo jumbo. Now that's gonna have to be the last question"

  • @basher27 OHH I just noticed what your talking about - the man in the background... CRAP I have no idea! LMAO

  • @basher27 he begins to ask some other question and sean interupts tellin him no that was the last one i have to leave.

  • Love this movie. It touched me in many ways. The narrating at the beginning is brilliant and so is the beauty of this scene.

  • The tunnel is a "birth canal; hence the child being born at the end of the sequence.

  • i saw the movie yesterday. one of the greatest.

    top 10.

  • This opening made me buy the movie. Too bad the movie was painfully mediocre and not at all majestic [this this].

  • @RogerChillingworth

the films worth owning for the score, the cinematography and of course the performances from nicole kidman and anne heche though.

  • Leave it to Harris Savides, ASC to make something as poetic as that.

  • hubo una epoca en la que nicole kidman se consagro como una de las mejores actrices del mundo bitrh o reencarnacion es la prueba de ello ¿que pasaria si tu esposo volviera a nacer? MAGISTRAL NICOLE KIDMAN

  • i like the music, deep, powerful, if not a bit to eccentric

  • the name of the kid that is born is Sean Chris Treborn!! objections?, i think not

  • An enchanting scene

  • Great movie :)

  • Mesmerizing. There is something so magical about this opening, the deceptively cheerful music at the beginning, like fluttering birds; that gorgeous - but ominous - long tracking shot, the camera hovering over him as he runs, like death is following him, waiting to strike. Then he enters a dark tunnel - the biggest cliché for a death scene imaginable- but such a perfect, inevitable, and oddly beautiful last image for this sequence. I loved this film.

  • @producermattpop If I understood film grammar like you did, I'd quite my job.

  • An excellent film, infinitely watchable and notable for a few reasons, not the least of which being it's the last movie in which Ms. Kidman could use her entire face for expression.

  • Well, she still has her eyelids to work with...

  • She must stop with the lip thing...the rest is just fine.

  • Why do I love this opening tracking shot so much?

  • It is him, he tells her that he's not her "husband" he has been unfaithful to her and betrayed her; he denies it because he know it would have killed her

That's the whole point of the movie!

  • Your absolutelly right!

Also... the director prior to making this movie sad that he wanted to make a movie about "the idea of eternal love" - the answer is there:D

  • I didn't know that, but it was a wonderful film wasn't it? I cried so much, it was beautiful

You know what I recommend? If you liked Birth, you might also like that new movie, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Birth has been my favorite movie until I saw that film. Really, you should see it!

  • he died after running in that pace and distance? wtf

  • I guess it depends on what you want to believe in terms of what everything means. I simply took it as the boy had read all those secret love letters and that's how he knew everything and he truly loved Anna. Near the end, he finds out about the real Sean's other love and then realizes he can't be Sean since he truly loves Anna as opposed to Sean who had another lover.

  • very good answer!

  • Yeah, but this was a letdown as a climax. Sort of like a great cliffhanger and then you find out it's all a dream. The film was great at offering a terrific puzzle and then wimping out with the solution. Too bad because it had atmosphere to burn and great acting from everybody.

  • beautiful song, beautiful beginning movie. Alexandre Desplats, bravo!

  • what a movie. what a start. simply spell-binding in true meaning and sense of the word. simply amazing.

  • This is a fantastic way to begin a picture. However, I don't think BIRTH holds up at the end. The "big reveal" always felt like a copout to me.

But still, this is 4 minutes I'll gladly revisit any day.

  • This is REAL cinema folks. Not that commercial watered down, compromised and McCrap that studios crank out by the dozens. Masterful use of pace, score, image composition, editing, lighting and direction. Those elements all come together to make magic.

  • My God, that is an amazing start of this movie.

Never could figure out if that little boy really was the dead husband.

  • this is one of the very few movies that make me cry at the very, very beginning! It was this speech about the bird that is so remarkably and outstandingly sad! Just imagine it!

  • Obama/Biden '08

  • i am confused, did he like die because he was so tired from running or something?

  • he got an heartattack

  • I loved this movie literally watched it 50 times

  • So unlikely you'd ever catch this conservative Republican watching a Nicole Kidman film, but I must say, this movie is an artistic masterpiece and engaging mystery with gripping character emotion; and Kidman was superb. It's way underpublicized. Loved seeing Lauren Bacall too.

  • is this a good movie?

  • Excellent. Very underrated.

  • Obama/Biden '08

  • Best nicole's movie! Alexander Deplat's music haunts me for days...

  • Yes, I totally agree. The music is outstanding. One of the best film scores in the history of cinema.

  • it IS a beautiful film, beautifully shot, beautiful music, characters n story. But it IS a bit depressing the fact that Nicole Kidman's character is struggling with past love.

I cried sooo mucho from seeing this(3 times already i think..), 1 of my favv!

  • stanley kubrick, is that you?

  • Seriously! This movie is full of stuff just like this opening scene, and it really is a work of genius. Very Kubrickian indeed.

  • Glazer has acknowledged a debt to Mr. Kubrick. And boy, don't we need a film maker of Kubrick's depth and daring in these dismal movie-going times?

  • Don't remind me!!!! please!!!

  • paul thomas anderson... check it out

  • Love...

  • This is the best opening scene I have seen for a movie. Magnific!

  • I agree! This was one of the most beautiful movies of all time, but unfortunately is very misunderstood

  • I agree! A lot of people don't understand the story.. but it is such a beautifull movie! Nicole is such a good actress and the little boy is really great too!

  • Thank you for understanding! Its a shame, almost everyone I know hated it and thought it was depressing...
