respect to the fisherman. not only was he able to keep it on when it hit the current, but his after catch etiquette was exemplary. A true sportsman freezes his ass off in the river until he knows the fish is ready to go.
good sport man-did fish recover as did not quite see it swim away-these are the big hen-fish which produce thousands of eggs on spawning, so best put back
-i take rainbow trout for "pot" from 2lbs -4lbs maximum
Massive thumbs up for letting it go. Glad it lived and was able to thrive. Amazing fish and am proud that New Zealand still has fish this big for us to catch.
So glad to see you release it. :) So many "dead zones" in the oceans and rivers now (Google Earth, type in "dead zones" ...these areas are monitored by a university in Virginia, USA)... makes me soooooooooo sad. :( NZ is so beautiful. I would love to see it some day.
This fish was observed for the next 1.5 weeks in the area of river it was caught living healthy and well and was seen enjoying raucous sex with a very healthy looking hen fish during that time - but it might have been another fish that was of similar proportions. @07heavn
510 aaron how do you figure this fish was out of the water to long? it was unhooked then returned to the water quickly. Job well done I say and what a smashing fish!
pretty disapointed with the way you handled it though. brought it up onto dry rocks and then kept it out of the water for longer than it really needed to be. and then took it back out of the water. the fish doesnt even move before the video cuts out! too much stress on the fish. I hope it lived!

cobias first of all you seem to have no idea what youre talking about 1 fish needs to rest it was sighting up under its own power gills were not harmed he handeled that wish verry well 2nd it was a steelie
That was not a steelhead...even though NZ has them. That was a native rainbow. He fought tit to long and took it out of the water. It probably wont live.
nice fish but i would have thrown that dink in the frying pan come to the manistee river if u want a real trophy what was that fish 18 lbs jeez. big deal punk lolz
@KeepItRBL some of the brown trout we get and the sea run brown are that big. might see 10-20 a day up the head waters of the back countrie rivers :D gota love being a kiwi :D
Well it's not uncommon for new fish to move into a prime pool or lie the moment it becomes vacant. That's why trout spend so much time defending their turf. However you may be right and maybe the fish survived OK. I hope so as it is a good fish and handling like that usually results in infection or deep trauma to flesh or gills that will kill the fish slowly or swiftly. Basically if you intend to release, treat the fish as gently as possible as they are fragile out of their element.

That was an absolutely stunning fish, and a stunning location - I'm a coarse angler in the UK (the trout fishing here is either very shit or very expensive) but I was fortunate to enjoy some trout fishing in NZ a few years ago. I had some nice rainbows on the Ahuriri and the Twizell but that beast was bigger than all of them put together!! Well done sir. They look so much better swimming away than they do on a plate.
Holy gaucamole, fantastic. Nice release as well!

Great fish Simon. Only just stumbled on this after seeing it on your website years ago.
Hope your season went well this time and you have some good snow. Will look you up for sure next time I make it to Qtown. All the best

Catching a fish that big is pretty hard, but what is ever more hard is letting it go. I give you my respect.

Jesus! A fish that size needs to be treated with a bit more care; whilst we may be happy on the riverbank not many fish are.
