We'd love to do that. When we investigated this a while back we were told the airlines thought we'd turn away tourists if we showed them the dangers on our beaches. It makes much sense to us to prepare tourists.
Mate, see where that green gap is in the surf?....THAT is where you want to paddle out to the line up. Gets you out to there much faster. Rips are not a bad thing.
my dad and brother drowned in a rip current last summer, mostly from panicking and fighting the current. ironic enough, before they went swimming, my dad and myself were talking about how to swim out of one. i miss them.
@du4lstrik3 I am sooooo sorry to hear about your dad and brother :(
Please accept my condolences.
Yes, rip currents can be deadly... I was stuck in one, and - not knowing to swim sideways - was trying to beat it, and quickly got totally exhausted.... Luckily, a friend of mine (followed by a rescuer) swam to me just in time.
I went out as a noob surfer in CA and got fucking destroyed by a rip. I was so damn far away the beach was tiny. I did everything wrong like tried to fight it. I actually got so tired I gave up and just rested on the surf board. Finally my friend kept waving his hands for me to swim sideways. It worked.
I was once caught in a rip current, off a Southern California coast.
At that time I had no idea what a rip was... so I tried to beat it (thinking it's the entire ocean "taking me away" to sea), and got quickly exhausted, as it happens in most cases. I yelled for help repeatedly, but to no avail; nobody could see me, or hear me, from the shore... I thought that was it... the end... but luckily (LUCKILY!) my friends did eventually hear me, and swam to the rescue!
my dad told me the story when he got caught into one of these. this was before i was born, he swam to the left and ended up getting cut by the spikes on the poles under the pier. he still have the scratchs to this day. THANK GOD HE SURVIVED OR I WOULDN'T BE HERE!!!
Very very good!! Short but powerful, and the message is clear. I am a life guard myself (although in Europe) but this material is definately useful for my students.
Can you ask my questions please? Thanks. 1. What is the presenter’s name and what is his job? 2. How often do people drown in Australia? 3. How long does it take to drown? 4. Where should you swim? 5. How many beaches are there in Australia? 6. What is a rip current? Why is it dangerous? 7. Why do rips exist? What do they do? 8. Can you remember 2 things you should do if you are caught in a rip? 9. Can you remember 2 things you shouldn’t do? 10. How can you avoid a rip current?
I got stuck in one too. I was so scared. There was no one around at all. I had to save myself or die. Worst experience ever man. I am a great swimmer either
This should be part of every school kids education, even if they live a long way inland and have never visited the sea. Some day they probably will, and if they are aware of the danger of rips they may survive.
A rip current is different from a rip tide. What's the difference?
I was caught in some kind of rip when I was a kid - about waist high - I rode on the waves, and planted my feet in the sand when the waves flowed out. The tug around my legs was frightening. Took alot of energy and concentration to get to shore.
In the end I felt great because I used my noodle to survive. Or because I survived!
A young man drowned 36 hours ago in a rip in Lake Michigan, just a half-mile away from my family's home. The helicopters are swirling and boats are patrolling the waters on this cool, windy day. They still haven't found the body. My heart goes out to his family and friends.
This is an excellent video. Should be required video for anyone going near a beach.

Single most important thing he said: "A rip current won't pull you under water, there is NO SUCH THING as an 'undertow'."
Seriously. No such thing as an "undertow". The concept suggests that if you don't fight hard to stay above water, you'll get pulled under and drowned, which is totally not true. If you hear someone talking about an "undertow", immediately remind them that all they have to do is swim parallel to the beach.

@geedunk13 Rips will generally flow (and take people) about as far offshore as the waves are breaking about 80% of the time. the other 20% of the time, the rips pulse and shoot water (and people) a bit further offshore. All rips eventually stop though. hope that helps.
@geedunk13 they usually can take u out as long as 300 or 400 m from shore. it depends at wat place. as u saw in the video there are diff. types. of ripp tides. im just saying not in all places. there are ripp currents or tides. if ur going to hawaii and the water is crystal clear. and no waves. there abouvsly isnt anything there. its usually in places like mexico and australia. wen ive been cought in it it took me maybe. around to 11 or 12 feet deep water. so u cant reach the bottom
@geedunk13 no u dont hv to worry about that. are u going to a public beach or private if public. dont worry. this isnt 1897 nowadays they put nets so sharks wont go were people swim.were are u going ?
@geedunk13 well the only thing i would advise u is just not to go deep cause i belive u guys hv a con. shelf there. its one of those things were u go in water and it drops 6 meters away. jsut plunges down liek 300 meters. so i just dont go swimmin gi stay really close to shore
@geedunk13 if u live u said in sc. if ur talking about an ocean there prob is a continental drop. what a continintal drop is is it divides the continent and ocean. if you hv been to places like mexico ull prob. understand wat im talking about. not in all parts, but some. so pretty much its a drop u go in the water up to ur waist or w.e then u might notice wen ur standining waste depth if u get some goggles ull see this huge wall that goes down. u wont see it but ull see that it drops down.
@geedunk13 and thats wats called a continental drop. im not saying there dangerous but if u go past it or above it there might be some creatures. iunno of sharks. for me im much more scared of jelly fish then a shark. they sting like hell. and it hurts bad. for liek a couple hours. So ya sry if i confused u. it is confusing but ya i dont think there will be a lot of sharks iunno. ive personally never hv seen a shark. in wild or met one. but just understand the logics of ripp currents.
there is such a thing as undertow dumbass google that shit, a undertow will suck you down and hold you under for a few seconds when a wave crashes and then spit u back up.
I thought i was dead today, i was at Huntington Beach CA and i was boogie boarding...going for the bigger waves i got caught in a rip current. i should have seen this vid before because i was stuck and needed rescuing...Lol "Dead man typing"
@SexSlave94 I got pulled out once too, but then a tiger shark came from below like a fish missle. Lucky i saw it at the last second and spread my legs. I rode his nose way up in the air and grabbed the landing gear of a 747 that was passing by otherwise I wouldn't be hear today.
i got stuck on a rip today in huntington beach and i didnt know what it was. i am a good pool swimmer and i just kept swimming against the rip and it would just push me. i started panicking and trying to get help. the lifeguard had to help me, and saved me.
When I go surfing, I can't be bothered paddling through the breaking waves so I use the rip to give me a free ride up to the back of the breaking waves so all I have to do is swim out to the side of the rip and catch a wave. Great Video, awesome for beginner surfers or people that do not know about rips and how they work.
I got caught in a rip and swam parallel to the beach, but the waves were unreal, so I got knocked around. It was exhausting, but I made it. I recall being so relieved, when I stood on solid ground..
I'm from a region of continuous sand beaches, so Sydney's beaches with headlands and coves are a bit exotic. Dr Brander's video helps explain how the 2010 Easter Monday Tamarama-Clovelly swim could be held in such large surf--there's a great deal of expertise on how this beach works. I can't tell for sure from photos at the Wentworth Courier, but possibly the swim route took advantage of a structural rip to get the participants out beyond the surf and on their way to Clovelly.
Rip current drowned a friend of mine last weekend. I hate beaches. They look pretty, lure you closer and closer until they kill someone everyday like a serial killer. I think all beach-goers should be required to learn about rip currents etc. and pass a test before going swimming at a beach.
@LoneVocalist I'm sorry to hear about your friends passing. I think they should show videos like this in school and have them posted on billboards near the ocean.
@lk0micho if its strong rip he cant. an experienced competitive swimmer (high school, collegiate like myself, or olympian like phelps) might be able to swim against it and make it to shore. a strong rip on the other hand, nobody can swim against and make it to shore. thats why you swim parallel to shore to get out of the rip. trust me I lifeguard at a beach so I know what I'm talking about
@lk0micho and I'm not bashing phelps at all. he's a great swimmer and is faster than I could ever hope to be, but he is still no match for fast moving water
Cheers for the vid! Now I know how to get out of one and spot one :) Got caught in a rip and got taken 100m+ out from the shore, before a friends mum saved us, when I was in primary school. Should help me avoid that kinda situation again! :P
Thank you very much for this video, a dear friend of mine recently drowned in a Rip while holidaying in Brasil for New Years.. He lived in the Gold Coast and used to go to the beach often, he was at a isolated beach with no lifeguards... its so important people learn how to be careful and know what to do.. if only he had watched this video before he left for holiday... This video is now on my facebook site for all my friends to watch.
Thanks for the great video. My 10 year old asked what a rip looks like and I didn't know. I felt like an idiot considering I've been a beach goer for over 30 years. This is the info that should be on the TV ads, approx 5 minutes of video has potentially saved thousands of lives....pass it on to those you love :)
my friend Will got caught by a rip current. and he swam against the current and made it back to shore! and when i asked him how he said it wasent that strong.
Suck air in and hold it to float higher? Um... getting locked in under a set after being rip pulled to a bad spot is as good as undertow. Basically you need to go down to the sand grab on and look for an opportunity to breach as soon as possible (without sucking the next wave down).
Usually no further than where the waves start to build up and break. Depending on the beach, maybe around 50 meters. Surfers actually use rips to take them out through the surf. Sort of like getting on a bus. They ride it out, paddle sideways to get off and then catch a wave back in. Saves a ton of energy.
HI, I'm on the beach every weekend patroling and just training, a rip is only to take the excess water out from the shore, the rip have a head which is normally out the back. So depending on the size of wave is will only take you out the back by like 50 m. it will never take you out to the middle of the ocean
He say's not to panic...Alright well yesturday i was stuck in the worst one ever....It was red flagged witch means basicly way bigger waves and no one was around my friend started walking away because he thought i was kidding around so i almost started to drown when sudenly a life guard saved me.. It's preaty fucking scarry in my opinon.
i was caught in a fix rip... its an expirience ull never want cuz one minute ur jumpin' waves having a good time and then before u know it u can barely see the beach and all i had was a boogie board to keep me floating and when someone did a signal no lifeguard saw so we had to get out of it ourselves...
great vid and its exactly what i do each time i get caught in one....first off, im a bodyboarder and i suggest that if youre goin out a pair of fins is a great investment......i got caught in one yesterday and all u do is relax swim sideways and catch the white water jus like what the video instructed...be safe yall
Very helpful video about rip currents ... 5 stars!
If everybody planning to go to the beach to swim watched this, fatalities from rip currents would sharply fall. This vid is easy to understand without sacrificing accuracy. Great job!
Rips aren't highly lethal in and of themselves... the panic that consumes someone who doesn't know how to escape a rip due to not understanding how they work kills by exhaustion due to fighting it head on and then drowning.
I was caught in a ripp too, thank god I had my new water proof blackberry T1000 I was able to call 411 and get the # to the lifegaurd who had his ipod on and didnt here me when I was 500 meters from land
I was caught in one about a week ago. I have a NEW FOUND RESPECT for the ocean and RIP TIDES. It toook me over an hour to get to shore and over 400 Meters out... I thought i was dead. The coast guard couldn't even get out to me. I thank the lord from above that i am still here...
im kind of scared of rips now, so if your like a rip expert or some sort, i got a question and if you cant answer my question somebody please answer. Are there any big rips in lake huron? And if, how deep do you have to be to actualy get caught in one?
There can be rips in Lake Huron; look for sandy beaches with big waves coming in, and you could find a rip. Great Lakes rip currents are more common than thought.
Wow. I just figured out I got stuck in one (i think). It was in Galveston and I was in a tube when it happened. The first time I realized I was going back was when I went off the tube and tried to swim back but it was hard because the waves disorient you. My dad was strangely pull me and the tube out though so it might not have been a rip. But it was scary!
yeah i was pulled out by a rip tide in the gulf of mexico in 07....300 yards and it scared me enough to not get in the ocean again. I thought i was dying basically but a surfer popped out of nowhere and saved me.
it would still hard for me to identify one ...i went surfing at north shore in hawaii n they told me there was a strong rip current.. but i never got pulled back... the life gaurd even drew me the classical diagram how they work.. i will be more attentive at finding them now tho
His main advice in that scenario is to not go in at all. They were pretty clear about what to do if you're stuck though (don't panic, don't swim against the rip, swim for the white water, let the rip spit you out ). Of course if you're not a good swimmer, these things aren't really options, so best to just stay out.
About 4-5 of us on a high-school excursion to the South coast of NSW got caught in one.
First you start to drift out slowly & higher in the waves & can't feel the bottom.
You need to stay calm & focused. Stay afloat & breath calmly. Then check the area around you to see if you can swim to sideways across to the nearest land even if it's rocks.
Never try to swim back to the beach!
It can also help by duck diving & swimming across towards land on either side of the beach.

I remember when I lived near an ocean beach when i was a kid, we would go in to the rip and let it carry us in to deep waters, then once we are out of it, or when we went out far enough, we would just swim parallel to shore and then compete on who is going to get back to the shore first.
They are not dangerous man eating things everyone makes them out to be. However they are dangerous if you have no beach experience, because you don't know what is going on, or how it works, and how to beat it.
I have a 15 year old wetsuit with a hole in the left knee the size of a 50c piece from the undertow at Gunnamatta..

Show a five minute clip about rips, including breathing techniques on how to stay calm on every plane arriving to every coastal city in Australia.
I'm sure anyone motivated enough (ie: anyone else but me) to push this idea to the Australian government, backed by UNSW would get this job done.

I am saddened by the regular loss of life. Having surfed the un patroled big breaks in WAs SW since the early 80s.
My experience tells me awareness, is the key to safety;
First, study the local weather beforehand.
Second, when at the beach, it really is worth sitting on a high point and observing the scenario in this video, most wise surfers do this.
Patience is part of good preparation. 20 - 30 minutes is perfect.
Please pay this forward.

@geedunk13 well the only thing i would advise u is just not to go deep cause i belive u guys hv a con. shelf there. its one of those things were u go in water and it drops 6 meters away. jsut plunges down liek 300 meters. so i just dont go swimmin gi stay really close to shore
prokravmaga54 1 year ago
@prokravmaga54
what do you mean it goes out 6 meters? Then drops down? You talking about the ocean depth?? Im confused sorry
geedunk13 1 year ago
@geedunk13 if u live u said in sc. if ur talking about an ocean there prob is a continental drop. what a continintal drop is is it divides the continent and ocean. if you hv been to places like mexico ull prob. understand wat im talking about. not in all parts, but some. so pretty much its a drop u go in the water up to ur waist or w.e then u might notice wen ur standining waste depth if u get some goggles ull see this huge wall that goes down. u wont see it but ull see that it drops down.
prokravmaga54 1 year ago
@geedunk13 and thats wats called a continental drop. im not saying there dangerous but if u go past it or above it there might be some creatures. iunno of sharks. for me im much more scared of jelly fish then a shark. they sting like hell. and it hurts bad. for liek a couple hours. So ya sry if i confused u. it is confusing but ya i dont think there will be a lot of sharks iunno. ive personally never hv seen a shark. in wild or met one. but just understand the logics of ripp currents.

I think they should show videos like this in school and have them posted on billboards near the ocean.

fuck that michael phelps can swim against a rip current naked
lk0micho 1 year ago
@lk0micho if its strong rip he cant. an experienced competitive swimmer (high school, collegiate like myself, or olympian like phelps) might be able to swim against it and make it to shore. a strong rip on the other hand, nobody can swim against and make it to shore. thats why you swim parallel to shore to get out of the rip. trust me I lifeguard at a beach so I know what I'm talking about
aerosmithmotleycrue 1 year ago
@lk0micho and I'm not bashing phelps at all. he's a great swimmer and is faster than I could ever hope to be, but he is still no match for fast moving water

Swim parallel to the beach and catch a wave back in (white water). Worst thing to do is panic and swim against it.
Also dont be a hero (or too proud) if your struggling just put your hand up and call for a life guard...

Suck air in and hold it to float higher? Um... getting locked in under a set after being rip pulled to a bad spot is as good as undertow. Basically you need to go down to the sand grab on and look for an opportunity to breach as soon as possible (without sucking the next wave down).

how far out does the rip generally take you? anyone know?
eurotrash1234 2 years ago
probably to new zealand.
Maxamone 2 years ago
Usually no further than where the waves start to build up and break. Depending on the beach, maybe around 50 meters. Surfers actually use rips to take them out through the surf. Sort of like getting on a bus. They ride it out, paddle sideways to get off and then catch a wave back in. Saves a ton of energy.
utzon 2 years ago 4
a surfer friend of mine said he's been sucked him out far enough, so that he had to paddle 20 mins straight to get back to shore.
rozuell 2 years ago
HI, I'm on the beach every weekend patroling and just training, a rip is only to take the excess water out from the shore, the rip have a head which is normally out the back. So depending on the size of wave is will only take you out the back by like 50 m. it will never take you out to the middle of the ocean

Very helpful video about rip currents ... 5 stars!
If everybody planning to go to the beach to swim watched this, fatalities from rip currents would sharply fall. This vid is easy to understand without sacrificing accuracy. Great job!
Rips aren't highly lethal in and of themselves... the panic that consumes someone who doesn't know how to escape a rip due to not understanding how they work kills by exhaustion due to fighting it head on and then drowning.

im kind of scared of rips now, so if your like a rip expert or some sort, i got a question and if you cant answer my question somebody please answer. Are there any big rips in lake huron? And if, how deep do you have to be to actualy get caught in one?
xXTrueSShotX 2 years ago
Rips only occur on ocean beaches -- not on lakes. Certainly not on inland lakes! And the surfing isn't too hot on Lake Turon, either.
milesfp 2 years ago
... That should have read "Lake Huron".
milesfp 2 years ago
Not only in ocean beaches also in Black Sea there are a lot of rip currents.
suavideo 2 years ago
Not entirely true! Rips can develop anywhere there is an onshore water flow, which is really any relative large body of water...even rivers.
messierfn1 2 years ago

I thought i was dying basically but a surfer popped out of nowhere and saved me.

but what happens if theres no life guards ,no one with you
and your not a good swimmer?
ballerinakay 2 years ago
