@kareemisegyptian02 Hi there! well, know how to draw is a big plus, but animation is a very complicated art form to teach in a couple of messages over here you know. Observation is one of the keys to learn, once you learn the basis really well, then it comes another stage, learn how to act through your characters, give them life. Feel free to send me over your anim tests and when I have the time I can correct or suggest ways to improve it. CHeers!
@navapalm Awesome! Hey Pablo thank you for your time, ive posted my 2d final , and I hope you can check it out and shoot me a critique. Idk if you'll notice but you've inspired much of my work. Its on my channel as The Bridge Troll.

Hey Pablo! I just got done doing a test of cat shepherd for my character animation class- you're a big inspiration, haha! I heard you frequent CTN, so maybe I'll catcha there if I go this year?
@kingkibble Great! cat shepher still lives yeah! Thank you for your kind words, I'm honored that you find inspiration within my work! I went to CTNX last year for the first time, if they invite me again this year for some talks for sure we can meet over there!
you are tooo good. im in my second year, in a 2 d animation class atm and wahhh i wuld do anything to get to where u r. sooo phenominal, havent seen anything like it in a long time. are these ur own charactrs?
@AshChan19 Hi! thanks for the nice comment and compliments! No, they're not my characters, they belong to different feature films I had worked in. In some cases like in Nocturna, I re-dessign the characters a little bit cause it was my task has a character supervisor. All the best in your career!

Hi, Im curious...I did a (ridiculous) anim just to see the result(first time), one thing that Im very curious is how do you digitalizes the images? I did 29 frames and wow, scanning it is boring and long proccess...theres special eqipment for that, or you just take pictures or anything(Im imagining how long it would take to scan 300+ frames...)
@yksnimus Digitalizing! not so long ago, we do line-tests with a line tester machine, a mechanic arm with a video cam attached, so we photograph one image at a time. Or a scanner...but it takes longer time, or a scanner with a auto feeder, that was good but extremely expensive due the A3 scanner with the auto feeder.Nowadays with digital tools and softwares, like the Wacom Cintiq's, you don't need to digitalize, you draw already IN the computer, so you save a lot of time!
beautiful animation really like it!! just a small question; if i am working on a short film and I am very eager to execute it using traditional animation since i feel it will suite the story best. if I am looking at making a 10 minute film what be an approximate time that will have be spent making it and what kind of cost will i be looking at. please any insight you could give me relating this topic could really help me. many thanks keep up the great work!
Hi, thank you for the nice comment! Regarding your question, it all depends on the complexity of the characters and story, it is not the same if you have a scene with one character or with five.....but I can give you some tips to calculate more or less the amount of time for the animation to be done, think that per character a animator will be able to do around 250, 300 frms per month, this is for good quality full animation. there are more variables but I'm running out of characters to type....
@navapalm Thats so interesting info, so that means 12,5 seconds of animation per month (24f/s)? Or is mostly 12 frames duplicated? I got the animators survival kit book and what I know about animation is just what I read on it..
@yksnimus no matter if your animating on "twos" or on "ones", we always calculate 24fps. Animation survival kit is a good book, I recommend Illusion of life too and a book I participate, full of tricks of the trade, you can find my chapter for free download in the publisher's web site
I haven't studied animation in a school, I studied it by myself, I'm a autodidact.
Not because of choice but because of personal situation at the moment I decided to become a animation artist, I didn't have the opportunity to attend to a school, so the only way I found was to study by myself and to spend a lot of time practicing.
Hi there, well for starters you can use Preston Blair animation book, followed by Richard Williams animator's survival kit, and last but not less important, the greatest animation book of them all....Illusion of life.
Finding producers is the most difficult thing around... i'm in the movie's world too, and i got the same problem. But you got talent and very good stuff to show. I think it's just a matter of time till you really get some important oportunity with your work.
Hi there, thanks for the encouragement! I hope to find producer soon, you know when you have something to tell through a story it burns inside you until you spill it out!
This looks fantastic. I use Toon Boom, and I hope and pray that I can put together something that looks as nice as this. Great job. I hope that Princess and the Frog re-invigorates traditional animation. This 3d stuff has it's place, but 2d will always be my favorite. GOOD JOB! and good luck to you
CGI it's ok, and there they are certainly some movies that wouldn't be possible without this technique, but every story has it's appropriated media to be told, let's hope more stories come out to be told in traditional, like you say, 3d has it's place, now it's time to share the cake isn't it !!!! ;)
Hi, thank you, glad you like it!!! I draw around 16 to 20 images per second, never under 12 unless I have to use a fix, but even though if I have a fix drawing I prefer to use a moving hold! I use a mix of drawing on "twos" and on "ones", I use this slight timing difference to achieve subtle movements and to give contrast to the movement..........
(continue) .Of course that what you're seeing here it's just rough animation, the ultimate version is in charge of the assistant and imbetweener following the timing charts found in every key drawing.
Amen to that! I don't think traditional will be main stream like it was a decade and a half ago, but I don't think either that it will be gone, today we have new tools, digital tools, that allow us to do traditional without paper, and I think thats the new wave of traditional animation, I'm still doing traditional but now I draw it in a wacom cintiq instead of paper. I'm developing a feature film of my own, and searching for producer, thats the problem today, it's hard to find people to who....
continue...it's hard to find people who are willing to bet again in traditional, but the moment that one of the majors companies (Disney, Dreamworks, etc) hit the jackpot again with one traditional movie, well, it will become a trend again, and the world market will be copying that, so let's hope that Princes and the frog have a nice box office by the end of the screenings so the smaller companies will follow their lead, like always was and like always will be. Peace back to ya! cheers!
haha yeah hope princes and the frog will be a success )))
tho u said about a producer.. really?! Is it still such a big problem these days? Im just a college student and dont know much about industry, but i was thinking that today in the age of google, blogs, ebay and youtube trends it's easy to produce things on your own and be able to make a profit of it. With no middle men you know.. :)
anyways good luck with ur film and wish u all the best!
Yes men, it is still a big problem to find producer and money for projects....Internet it is just a window, were you can see and be seen, but don't implies that you will find the big money you need to do a feature film.....thank you for the comment!
Hi there! Thank you, I try to answer to all the people who spend time watching, they deserve it!
Wow, animation mentor it's a great school! Don't worry, if you finish that, then you have a good starting point, now it is a matter of time and practice! I wish you all the best in your career!
This is just stunning! Love your individual style! Right now I've been working months on the movement alone for the animation! I haven't even touched the lines! What program do you use for the compositing of background and foreground? I've heard different programs and techniques...
Well, about softwares, you can use After FX for final comp, if you mean about linetest, I use CTP pro, or if you're drawing digitally, I use TVPaint animation Pro.
Advice.........uhmmm, don't be discouraged by hard work, animation is a long term run. observation, observe life, build up a mental library of actions and acting.
Focus on action and later on acting. Acting is the way to show emotions through actions.
Study a lot, experiment, and be true to yourself!
try your best at all times.....there is so much to say and so little space here!!
very nice stuff...i've wanted to be a cartoonist ever since i was 6, but you know how it is when parents get involved. but i started drawing again, so maybe one day, even if i'm an old man. there's just nothing like putting graphite to paper & making come to life
Thank you! I was in the same situation when I was a kid, but I made a deal with my parents, I study something more "down to hearth" and when I finished, I left my home to seek adventure in the art world....so far so good!
Good luck with your dreams I wish they come true! all the best!
Hi there! I didn't attend any school, not because I didn't wanted, but because were I was born (Argentina) there was no schools, and I didn't have the chance to go study outside my country....but I study a lot has an autodidact, read a lot of books and I experiment a lot, I was lucky because I got a job in animation at a early age and I learn a lot more actually working. I started my career from the bottom, my first assignment in animation was final line inker.
thanks for sharing! I can relate to that (I live in Tijuana and there aren't many animation schools arround here either) and that's good to know... that hard work and reading a lot can pay off even without a degree. I'm almost finished studying something non-related to film... but I'm thinking now that I would like to embark into a similar adventure...
I study electromechanics you know ;) and here I am, being a animator after 15 years of career drawing and drawing. I don't wanna give a wrong message here, going to a good animation school will make things happen faster than learning all by yourself, what I'm saying is that it is possible to achieve if you have passion for what you do, and a lot of hard work. So go ahead, follow your dream!!
Your drawings and characters are very solid. Thats not an easy thing to maintain. In terms of a demo reel, you may want to edit this down to one or two minutes, otherwise I think it starts to 'repeat itself'. And I say this not because some work is weaker than others, but animation directors usually are gonna make their decisions within the first 30 seconds of watching your stuff, and the rest never gets seen anyways...
Hi thanks for the nice comment, and for the advice!
Yes I agree with you, the demo it's too long right now, it is true, when you're searching for talents reviewing demo reels, you don't look more than a minute of it!
It happened to me when I was animation director at Filmax, that I had to review almost 200 reels per week! no time to watch them all completely.
Hi there! well, my average production quota is around 300frms of full animation per months, so do the math 1 minute have 1440fms and this demo reel have 5 minutes approx. This demo reel is a selection of scenes of several movies that I've work for...so it is the resume of several years of work.
I have virtually no animation experience but I just wanted to say (like many others) that you do beautiful work...especially for someone with no formal training! WOW. You are an inspiration and I wish you the best of luck with all your artwork :) Keep up the great tradition of 2D animation; it's my all-time favorite ^_^
is that Nocturna movie originally in english or spanish? watching the animation, it looks like it really matches up with the english... but looking around for this movie on torrent sites all i find is the movie in spanish or french...
Hi, Nocturna was animated in English originally, but the two countries involved in the production were Spain and France, so in the DVD the languages you'll find are English, Spanish and French.
And lastly, are you working on any other full features? I hope not to impose with that one. I wasn't sure if you worked with the great Sergio Pablos on Giacomo's Secret.
Thanks so much for enlightening us all with this amazing quality of work. Keep up the awesome work.
Hi lyle, I was suposed to work in Ruby tuesday with Sergio Pablos....but last news are that the movie got canceled one more time. Giacomo's secret its a really cool project hu?!!!! I hope Sergio finds funding soon for that! Right now I'm working on my own feature film project, like Sergio I'm searching for funding and partners. Thank you for the nice comments Lyle, I appreciate it! don't miss my blog more cool stuff over there and we can talk more extendedly ;)
I posted a response to this about two months ago and asked a couple of questions, I hope it's no bother to ask a just a few more.
Where did you study animation? I am so impressed with European animators, I only wish our American schools could compete at a Gobelins, Supinfocom type level.
Are Adria Garcia and Victor Maldonado working on anything currently, another beautiful full feature perhaps?
Hi Lyle, No problem at all in asking! perhaps you can ask me using the comments on my blog, you know, we can write more stuff over there than here ;)
I didn't attend any school.....I was born in Argentina, South America, and there was no animation schools....so I taught myself everything I know. You're right Goblelins is the best of the best! Adria & Victor are working in a new project, I can say much more, it is still in the confidential state. All the best Lyle, Cheers!
your work is inspirational, i hope one day to improve upon myself to this level. I've seen some excerpts for the Nocturna film, and i must see it.
I'm currently working on my final for my character animation I at DCAD. Although i'm interested in 3D computer, my favorite is traditional. I hope to see more.
wow impressive works! i guess you're a pro hey! im currently studying diploma of animation in Perth, Australia. I've always liked traditional animation. it makes your appreciate hand drawing. wow i am so impressed with this demo reel !
I started my career in animation around 1995, so.....14 years more or less.
You can get a copy of nocturna from dvd stores in france or spain.......give it a try to FNAC (thats the name of the store), I recommend the french edition.......much nicer packaging and extras.
I don't intend to simply flatter, but this is among some of the most impressive animation I have ever seen. I especially feel this way about your Nocturna work. I just finished my illustration degree at the Savannah College of Art and Design, and have just embarked on an animation minor, currently assigned to bouncing balls and a waving flag.
Thank you very much! even if wasn't your intention......well I'm flattered :)..........well never underestimate the power of a bouncing ball exercise! with the pass of time you'll see that all animation rules are resumed in that simple exercise!
Book I can't get tired of recommend "Illusion of Life". Tips, you have to become that character, know everything about him, how He will move and react to things, how the character thinks is a must to know.I participate in a book of animation lately, there I talk a lot of how to achieve life and believability in a character. It's not out yet, but it will be soon.
Sure you can ask! the thing is I didn't attend to any school, not because I didn't wanted but because in the country I was born (Argentina)there was not animation schools.
So I had to learn all by myself.
Watching a lot of animation and reading Frank & Ollie's "Illusion of life".
What I use to do more is to act the thing on my head first, then I act in front of a mirror and take some sketches. If action goes with acting, or if the acting I'm trying to do is very complicated, I shot myself on video or I give direction to a friend and record Him on video and then, I study the movement and I make some research sketches.I guess I do a bit of everything!
Always have in mind that one action and acting are the result of a mental process!
Use video ref, but ONLY HAS REF please! don't copy a movement, understand the mechanics of movement, and then improve it by animating it.I've seen many animators, copying and just copying the video, and the result is very lame. I've work in CG (big budget)movies where the animator animates with the video behind and He just pose the character over, and then they "touch up" the curves, has I've say, the result....cheap.So mind this thought, understand, not copy, and after this, improve it!
Muy bueno, Very cool, check my animations

Finding producers is the most difficult thing around... i'm in the movie's world too, and i got the same problem. But you got talent and very good stuff to show. I think it's just a matter of time till you really get some important oportunity with your work.
Good luck, hey!
BlackCircusArts 2 years ago
Hi there, thanks for the encouragement! I hope to find producer soon, you know when you have something to tell through a story it burns inside you until you spill it out!
All the best for you too!
Cheers!

This looks fantastic. I use Toon Boom, and I hope and pray that I can put together something that looks as nice as this. Great job. I hope that Princess and the Frog re-invigorates traditional animation. This 3d stuff has it's place, but 2d will always be my favorite. GOOD JOB! and good luck to you
balddude1976 2 years ago
Hi,
Thanks for the nice comment.
CGI it's ok, and there they are certainly some movies that wouldn't be possible without this technique, but every story has it's appropriated media to be told, let's hope more stories come out to be told in traditional, like you say, 3d has it's place, now it's time to share the cake isn't it !!!! ;)
All the best
cheers!
navapalm 2 years ago
wow, looks really smooth. I love it, your expressions are priceless. how many fps do you draw usually?
KalemYoung 2 years ago
Hi, thank you, glad you like it!!! I draw around 16 to 20 images per second, never under 12 unless I have to use a fix, but even though if I have a fix drawing I prefer to use a moving hold! I use a mix of drawing on "twos" and on "ones", I use this slight timing difference to achieve subtle movements and to give contrast to the movement..........
navapalm 2 years ago
(continue) .Of course that what you're seeing here it's just rough animation, the ultimate version is in charge of the assistant and imbetweener following the timing charts found in every key drawing.
Cheers!
navapalm 2 years ago
nice to see so many hand drawn animation today most of the time it's all digital (
do u think traditional animation will ever become main-stream again?
peace
ActiveStorage 2 years ago
Amen to that! I don't think traditional will be main stream like it was a decade and a half ago, but I don't think either that it will be gone, today we have new tools, digital tools, that allow us to do traditional without paper, and I think thats the new wave of traditional animation, I'm still doing traditional but now I draw it in a wacom cintiq instead of paper. I'm developing a feature film of my own, and searching for producer, thats the problem today, it's hard to find people to who....
navapalm 2 years ago
continue...it's hard to find people who are willing to bet again in traditional, but the moment that one of the majors companies (Disney, Dreamworks, etc) hit the jackpot again with one traditional movie, well, it will become a trend again, and the world market will be copying that, so let's hope that Princes and the frog have a nice box office by the end of the screenings so the smaller companies will follow their lead, like always was and like always will be. Peace back to ya! cheers!
navapalm 2 years ago
haha yeah hope princes and the frog will be a success )))
tho u said about a producer..
ActiveStorage 2 years ago
Yes men, it is still a big problem to find producer and money for projects....Internet it is just a window, were you can see and be seen, but don't implies that you will find the big money you need to do a feature film.....thank you for the comment!
All the best!

1-Creo que es una maravilla que vayas responiendo a los comentarios! Thumbs Up!
2-I just finished AnimationMentor a few months ago and when I look at your work I know that I still have Sooooo much to learn. And that's good.
You make your animation a pleasure to look at.
Thanks!

Hi there! Thank you, I try to answer to all the people who spend time watching, they deserve it!
Wow, animation mentor it's a great school! Don't worry, if you finish that, then you have a good starting point, now it is a matter of time and practice! I wish you all the best in your career!
Thanks for your comment

This is just stunning! Love your individual style! Right now I've been working months on the movement alone for the animation! I haven't even touched the lines! What program do you use for the compositing of background and foreground? I've heard different programs and techniques...
kcdisney 2 years ago
Thank you!
Well, about softwares, you can use After FX for final comp, if you mean about linetest, I use CTP pro, or if you're drawing digitally, I use TVPaint animation Pro.
Thank you for your nice comment!
All the best,

Awesome!! Any advice for a future animator?
VerseJer333 2 years ago
Thank you!
I wish you the best in your career!
Cheers!
navapalm 2 years ago
very nice stuff...i've wanted to be a cartoonist ever since i was 6, but you know how it is when parents get involved. but i started drawing again, so maybe one day, even if i'm an old man. there's just nothing like putting graphite to paper & making come to life
Zuranthus 2 years ago
Thank you! I was in the same situation when I was a kid, but I made a deal with my parents, I study something more "down to hearth" and when I finished, I left my home to seek adventure in the art world....so far so good!
Good luck with your dreams I wish they come true! all the best!
navapalm 2 years ago
hi! what did you study before you embarked into that adventure?
bukigalactico 2 years ago
I started my career from the bottom, my first assignment in animation was final line inker.
navapalm 2 years ago
thanks for sharing! I can relate to that (I live in Tijuana and there aren't many animation schools arround here either) and that's good to know... that hard work and reading a lot can pay off even without a degree. I'm almost finished studying something non-related to film... but I'm thinking now that I would like to embark into a similar adventure...
bukigalactico 2 years ago
Your welcome!
I wish you all the best!

Your drawings and characters are very solid. Thats not an easy thing to maintain. In terms of a demo reel, you may want to edit this down to one or two minutes, otherwise I think it starts to 'repeat itself'. And I say this not because some work is weaker than others, but animation directors usually are gonna make their decisions within the first 30 seconds of watching your stuff, and the rest never gets seen anyways...
just my two cents. good luck!
ekuska 2 years ago
Hi thanks for the nice comment, and for the advice!
Yes I agree with you, the demo it's too long right now, it is true, when you're searching for talents reviewing demo reels, you don't look more than a minute of it!
It happened to me when I was animation director at Filmax, that I had to review almost 200 reels per week! no time to watch them all completely.
All the best
Cheers!
navapalm 2 years ago
How long did this take to draw?:o
SlappieBob 2 years ago
Hi there! well, my average production quota is around 300frms of full animation per months, so do the math 1 minute have 1440fms and this demo reel have 5 minutes approx. This demo reel is a selection of scenes of several movies that I've work for...so it is the resume of several years of work.

Hey there Pablo,
I posted a response to this about two months ago and asked a couple of questions, I hope it's no bother to ask a just a few more.
Where did you study animation? I am so impressed with European animators, I only wish our American schools could compete at a Gobelins, Supinfocom type level.
Are Adria Garcia and Victor Maldonado working on anything currently, another beautiful full feature perhaps?
lynagy20 2 years ago
Hi Lyle, No problem at all in asking! perhaps you can ask me using the comments on my blog, you know, we can write more stuff over there than here ;)
I didn't attend any school.....I was born in Argentina, South America, and there was no animation schools....so I taught myself everything I know. You're right Goblelins is the best of the best! Adria & Victor are working in a new project, I can say much more, it is still in the confidential state. All the best Lyle, Cheers!

I have two questions for you. How long have you been animating? and where can I buy a copy of Nocturna?
Keep up the beautiful work, you are truly an inspiration to us beginners.
lynagy20 2 years ago
I started my career in animation around 1995, so.....14 years more or less.
You can get a copy of nocturna from dvd stores in france or spain.......give it a try to FNAC (thats the name of the store), I recommend the french edition.......much nicer packaging and extras.
Cheers! and thanks for the nice comments!

I don't intend to simply flatter, but this is among some of the most impressive animation I have ever seen. I especially feel this way about your Nocturna work. I just finished my illustration degree at the Savannah College of Art and Design, and have just embarked on an animation minor, currently assigned to bouncing balls and a waving flag.
lynagy20 2 years ago
Thank you very much! even if wasn't your intention......well I'm flattered :)..........well never underestimate the power of a bouncing ball exercise! with the pass of time you'll see that all animation rules are resumed in that simple exercise!
Cheers and the best of luck in your career!

how the hell do you do it!? amazing.. any tips for getting that 'life' into your characters? any books too??
hairyhoff 2 years ago
Well, it takes a lot of time and patience!!
All the best

davidrundmc 2 years ago
Hola, Gracias por tu comentario y por los alagos!
A que te refieres con programas?, programas de estudio? o softwares de animacion?
un saludo!
navapalm 2 years ago
davidrundmc 2 years ago
navapalm 2 years ago

navapalm 3 years ago
yeah i smell that lol!
no doubt you're very skilled in acting.
You use yourself to do these acting scenes or you use people ?? or ...
, you do these scenes just like that...
orinn24 3 years ago
A little bit of this, little bit of that!
Always have in mind that one action and acting are the result of a mental process!
navapalm 3 years ago
very thanx for your reply!
that's explain a bit the quality, i'll use more video reference then too!
(even if i still dont have a camera video ^^')
keep it up master!!
orinn24 3 years ago
Use video ref, but ONLY HAS REF please! don't copy a movement, understand the mechanics of movement, and then improve it by animating it.I've seen many animators, copying and just copying the video, and the result is very lame. I've work in CG (big budget)movies where the animator animates with the video behind and He just pose the character over, and then they "touch up" the curves, has I've say, the result....cheap.So mind this thought, understand, not copy, and after this, improve it!
Cheers
navapalm 3 years ago
Very thanx for your reply!
i got it!
if we copy ,the personality is gone, it's cold and robotic.
I really hope to improve the video ref but i guess only great animator can do that.
anyway i need to working more.
