I am going to attempt to build one of these from scratch cuz it will be cheaper than a kit. But I don't know what materials to use and I was thinking aluminum. Wish me luck.
I think I got it! I have an old radio flyer cart, all I need is the wings, engines, propellers, and of course a piloting handle! All in all a couple thousand! Thank you for inspiring me!
Don't let it only be a dream. Make that dream a reality. A big point about ultralighting is that it's not mega expensive. For example, a Skypup can be built safely for $2,000, to $3,000. Some used ULs can be bought at a similar price. Once that initial cost is spent, maintaining and operating it hardly costs anything. Think of an ultralight as a 4 wheeler or dirt bike. It's much less expensive than a car, but does require a certain level of dedication.
Cool airplane! I love the design. If I had enough money and enough space (and I guess money can get you more space) I would definitely have one! Let me know when you get your N-number (I hope you are) and your airworthiness certificate.
iam 19 and live in md can u fly these ultra lites around without the faa or cops getting on u?and i have about 3000$ to spend could i build one for that?
I'm about to start flaying those and U cant fly without an sport pilot license from f.a.a. but if u have all the legal stuff ur suppose to have inluding the license , and a lugit place to take off and land then coffe and donuts (the cops) should stay off ur tail. But I dont think that three grand would get u a good ultralight, but it depends on what u want but they usually run at about ten grand on average. But make sure u have good stuff on the one u build!
Yes! Unlike what anyone else will yell you, you CAN build an ultralight with $3,000. I'm doing it myself! There may be more of them out there that will fit the bill, but the Skypup is the one I'm building. You also have to consider safety. I don't think there's anything out there other than the Skypup that's safe, solid, stable, and FAR 103 legal.
If you're looking to build something that will take up 2 people, then I'd recommend you looking into finding a Sport Pilots licence and a whole lot more money.
On the other hand, you can find a legal ultralight and fly it without a Sport Pilot licence (although training shouldn't be skipped).
The red ultralight in the beginning of the movie is a T-Bird. They're very nice aircraft, but I'm not a big fan of them because they come with yokes instead of sticks. I'm sure you could modify them to use a stick if you wanted to. Some people like the yoke, so it's just a personal opinion. You can find out more about the T-Bird at indyaircraftltd dot com. The web page for the particular T-Bird in the video can be found at sblom dot com/tbird/
How much would a T-Bird run? I can sacrifice the yoke for the stick, but im just starting out, so what would u recomend. I'm sixteen, and I know about the sport pilot license. But what would u say, is it a good one for a beginner like me?
If you'd like to go the Sport pilot route, the T-Bird is excellent. If you want to go the ultralight way, the T-Bird will not work for you. There hasn't been one around that's in the legal weight and starting next year the FAA is going to start enforcing the FAR 103 rules quite strictly. If you'd like to purchase a new one, give them a call at (319) 334-2473. You can also find them used for under $10,000. (Part 1)
Quicksilvers are very nice ultralights and you can find FAR 103 compliant used ones for under $3,000. The CGS Hawk is another plane that has an enclosed cabin, just like the T-bird. Also, Doug Hart from Hart Aero (hartaero dot com) makes a whole line of REALLY cool legal ultralights and Light Sport Aircraft that would be great for someone like you. You can find affordable, new ultralights from Hart Aero, otherwise, there's plenty of used ones that I'm sure you can find.
It all depends on personal preference. One seat (ultralight) or two seats (light sport)? Fast (Light Sport), or fun (ultralights)? Tricycle gear or taildragger? Floats, skis, or wheels? Open cockpit (mainly ultralight), or enclosed (mainly Sport Pilot)?
I've gotten the videos from multiple places. I don't remember where all of them are from, but if you want to see some really good videos, go to windsandwings(dot)com. You get to be in the passenger seat as they go on their adventures and journeys. It's unbelievable!
I've had about 6 hours of control in a Rans S6, Quicksilver Sport, Quicksilver on floats, and an Antares trike. I'm getting training in a few months, so I'll get more time there in a Quicksilver sport.
I like this a lot. I want to make a flying video of my own some day! When I am equipped with a plane LOL, but this vid is exactly the thing I'm after. Great inspiration for me there, nicely put together. Good stuff outa you sir!

@randomlymadevids Better buy yourself some plans. ULs mostly consist of aluminum, wood, or composites.

@20stevieray The answer to your question is debatable. Lots of people like Quicksilvers. I like them too, but I enjoy Pterodactyls even more.

If you are patient, you'll find one under $5,000. I've personally seen an airworthy one go for $3,200 on Ebay.
Without a doubt, the T-Bird is a very safe, stable, and fun little aircraft, but you might want to consider something else. (Part 2)
