  • thank you so much! thank you! i was lost until i saw this! without you i would fail my quiz!!!

  • @starbyheart you are very welcome : )

  • This is actually really really helpful, thanks so much.

  • dude how do you determine de f(x) domain and the graph range?

  • This is incredible! Such a big help. Now it's so clear to me. Thank you very much.

  • this is great,,,, an hour of discussion even it is so elaborated already is nothing compared for some simple little tricks you taught us...^___^

  • Awesome! thank you.

I was hoping that you had the domain and range of these functions here as well.

  • awesome, I love how I'm totally lost, then I watch this video and I let out a big "OOH!"

  • @321erup123 ha : )

  • OMG I get it now :D You're the best! *subscribed*

  • OMG THIS HELPED ME SO MUCH! :)

  • OH MY GOD I GET IT

  • okay i understand this now , thanks to you .. but i'm having trouble with graphing stupid equations like : y=(x-4)Squared -4....sorry i don't know how to do exponents on a computer...

  • @neneluvred do "^" before the number

  • YOU ARE GODLIKE!! :D Thank you Sooooo much!!

  • thankx man. this video was really helpful! :)

  • I wanna shoot the mofo that invented this and made it so complicated!

  • thankyou for the help! GOD Bless!

  • say that f(x) = x+5 if x<-2 , would you need a x that is greater than -2 or it doesnt matter? (my teacher never taught me this nd she expects me to do this)

  • say that f(x) = x+5 if x<-2 , would you need a x that is greater than -2 or it doesnt matter? (my teacher never taught me this nd she expects me to do this)

  • Thanks so much. My algebra 2 teacher is good but if he just explained as well as you there wouldn't be any confusion.

  • @Obamanation154 thanks : )

  • Wow! I cried...when my teacher explained it in class I was...I didnt get it at all.But you are awesome!!!You show this in a very easy way.I think if you were my teacher I could become a math professor ;). Thanks a lot.

  • @Shineinpoverty come back and watch any time : )

  • LOL im in grd 8 and now i can do pre calculas

  • Ahhh, my algebra II teacher shows your videos in class, good call XD. Thank you for making these, I'm doing an assignment for this right now and I got stuck. Not stuck anymore! :]

  • @Chelswidjaja glad to help!

  • Getting my math homework gets me high. fuck weed. so thanks man, continue supplying the goods.

  • this guy has been with me since algebra 1. im in precalc. GOD BLESS <3

  • honestly this guy helped me better than my math teacher

  • thank you! :)

  • omg thank you so much!

  • this dude's geting me through high-school

  • does he have one backwards, like they give me the graph and i have to get the function?

  • Thanks so much for uploading these videos. They are extremely helpful. I have a hard time just focusing in class but these videos are brilliant!!!!

  • Thank you! A missed one day of school and then i come bak and we have a test over this tomorrow! My book didnt even explain it! Ur vid is so informative and makes sense! Keep up the good work!!!

  • Dude! You saved my life! Test tomarrow and i understand it! U r at this moment mu favorite video creator ever! Haha

  • i tink ur artistry in drawing ur graphs is actually really good..:)...great video as well

  • ahh! can't read red, especially on a white-board! but that's alright, you're an awesome teacher

  • CALCU-LOSE NO MORE! =))

  • thank you so much!!!!!!! i am taking a summer course and they teach us like 5 lessons a day, and i come home and watch your videos and teach myself haha :)

  • @sugarcoated122 that's what I'm doing right now. I will never take math during the summer again!

  • are all piecewise defined functions discontinuous somewhere?

  • thanks! <3

  • i love you.

  • wow, i finally understand! this is really helpful:D

  • why is it from -3 to 4?

it that the range of the graph?

  • @zeldaLvr yep, that is the range.

  • @patrickJMT isn't -3 to 4 the domain, because it's the x values? the range would be -3 to 2? (i think you forgot the negative sign on the -3,-3 point).

    great!!

  • You sir are an amazing teacher =D. You saved my butt on this test tommarrow.

  • what would the domain and range be of the first example you showed us? i tried to find it but i feel as if its wrong

  • Are they also called Hybrid functions?

  • i have a pre cal test today and these have been giving me tremendous problems, yet now when you explain it, it seems too easy, thx a ton

  • Soo, I have a pre-calculus project due tomorrow, and it's called Piecewise Regression Project. We're supposed to be finding at least 12 data points that must be able to be defined by two or more equations over a specified domain. I'm not really sure where I can get these data points from, so if you could help me, like ASAP, it'd be greatly appreciated.

  • @iitsBDUBB nothing like waiting til the last minute to do one's project

  • @patrickJMT Yeah, I know. I've got data points, but I'm not sure whether or not it can create a piecewise function.

  • your videos are helping me pass college pre-cal. Thanks :)

  • wow thanks ! your video is the only one explaanation i found in the internet and actually understood.

    thumb up!! :D

  • @Ma66otGirl glad u like it!

your smashing pumpkins video on your page reminds me of when i had my sp shirt back in middle school before they hit it really big - mission to mars.

  • @patrickJMT omg you teach me how to do the math that my pre calc teacher fails to do and you're a Smashing Pumpkins fan so you may be the best person alive.

  • I love you!! Let's get married :D

  • Nice to see a video with someone who finally has good hand writing. Well done, this helped me out a lot.

  • you. are. a. life. saver. the end. thanks for the websight to

  • I need some clarification when to use open and closed circles.

  • thanks for the video. how do i which point is dot and which is open?

  • awesome! Thanks!!!

  • if all three are Y=something, then how come u drew lines on y and x on the graphs ?

  • Thanks, it helped a lot, but may I suggest having more colors?

  • ohhhhhhh i see

  • BE MY TEACHER!!!!

  • Yay I understand now! I have an Algebra 2 quiz on this tomorrow so, THANKS!!!

  • you are the beast i swear.

  • @patrickJMT why at 6:00 did you get that 3 from? I understand how you got that -3, but I'm confused at how you got the positive 3 from. Plz reply asap because i got midterms on monday and I need to get this down

  • @LongboardATL He meant -3, he just forgot to put the dash

Notice the point is plotted in the correct place, and that's what matters.

  • thank you sir!

  • Thank you so much. I was so lost on Piecwise functions. Your video helped my study for my math final!

  • I LOVE YOU.

  • This helped me a lot! Thanks so much for posting and helping us not-so-genius-at-math students :)

  • i love math coz it's hard...and can you teach physics?

  • YOU ARE MY MATH GOD.

    THANK YOU SO MUCH.

my teacher is sooooo bad at explaining

  • OMGAAAAAAD!! thank you!

  • this is such an easy way to do it! Cool and thanks! :D

  • Thanks a mil Patrick! I've used your videos for 2 years now and they've been invaluable. You need a donation page!

  • THANK YOU!!!!!!! keep it up. you seriously saved me cuz i just wouldn't get this

  • Thanks so much for the help. KEEP IT UP!!!

  • What happens to the -2 then on the second example?

    :S

  • THANK YOUS SOOOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!! just get more colors dude :P

  • your voice is soothing.. 0>0

  • thank you, you teach better than my teacher

  • oh my gosh!

    YOU ARE A LIFE SAVER.

    thank you SO MUCH.

i have a test tomorrow & i'm cramming and stressing

right now because my teacher NEVER explains these

    stuff. THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU! :DDD

  • Really nice tutorial!

Not too many people who I see honestly trying to help people on YouTube. Love what you're doing and this actually helped me quite a bit (I just couldn't grasp it the way my teacher was attempting to teach it).

    Thanks!

  • what about when you have the function

    f(x)={2x, if x < -2

then how would you input the x variable for y=2x

  • can i steal you and make you my teacher?

  • omg this is sooo helpful! I'm taking pre-cal and i was so lost today . Thanks !!

  • wow this is a big help

  • an innocent question, where did u get the numbers 0 and 2 ???in the first example ??

    thanks 4 ur help

    my thanks to u

  • an innocent question, where did u get the numbers 0 and 2 ???in the first example ??

    thanks 4 ur help

    my thanks to u

  • if there is a word like "super-extremely-useful", then that accurately describes ur video..thanks man

  • Hey Thanks for the video!! :) This actually really helped me since my Algebra 2 teacher can't teach very well -____-

  • Thanks a bunch from Kuwait!

  • Thank You SOOOOOO much =)

  • thank youuu!!

  • Your video really helped me a lot! I've never been good at math, it never came easy to me, and with an upcoming test on monday, this really came in handy. Thankyou so much!

  • why is y=√x is curve?

  • just plot points and you will see!

  • where can i learn about limits, calculus, and analitic geometri

  • i have lots of limits and calculus videos... dont know bout the analytic geometry

  • @patrickJMT

correct me if iam wrong but isn't a piece wise a part of analytic geom or just algebra

  • Awesome ! Thank you very much !

  • This is awesom Patric, clear voice, neat writting and great pace. Good Job this helps!

    5/5

  • THANK YOU! This concept has been evading me because I didn't take the time to notice some of your steps! Thank you so much, you are doing quite a service here!

  • no worries : ) happy to help.

  • you are the chuck norris of math. thank you for your help. i have a test of this material tomorrow and you finally explained clearly on how to do this on the test, unlike my teacher.

  • ha! thanks! now go *karate chop* your teacher!

  • Thanks so much for teaching me this stuff. My math teacher didn't teach me anything on this stuff. You actually EXPLAIN what you're DOING. I subscribed lol.

  • yeah my teacher sucks so I'm so happy you made this video. Thanks!

  • You. are. amazing.

I haven't gotten this for like a week, no matter how hard I tried--but I finally understand it! Thanks for posting this!

  • EEEEEPPP!!! You've cured me! I was afraid of Piecewise Defined Functions this morning! Thank you thank you thank you!

    *mwa!*

  • I usually wouldn't call someone teaching me math a badass...but DAMN! You are the definition of THE SHIT! Thanks so much man, finally makes sense to me.

  • i make math... sexy!

    (probably not)

    thanks my friend!

  • how do you find the domain and range of this

  • i just made a video response that addresses this question. it is processing at the time of me writing this, but it should be available shortly!

feel free to look at my video about 'reading the domain and range from a graph' video too!

  • how do u write a piecewise formula from a graph

  • well, that can be hard. it depends on what types of functions are present in the graph...

  • You Rock! I finally understand how to do this! :)

  • piecewise functions seem to drive a lot of people crazy at first! glad it makes sense now

  • Patrick... U DA MAN! thanks a bunch 4 this!

  • aww yea!! : )

  • Thank you!Thank you!Thank you!This finally makes sense.Would you like to come replace my Algebra 2 teacher?Come on.You know you want to,patrickJMT.Please:D

  • ha! i am teaching a college algebra class, and i bet a bunch of them wish your teacher would replace me!!!!! : )

  • thanks you made since to me i just got out of a class that was an hour and a half long and you made more sence in 8min

  • Hey pat, your the best man thanks for explaining piece wise so detailed, I have a math teacher he is a total flock.

  • hey man! no problem! and ....educate a stupid guy who is getting older and out of touch... i assume you mean 'total flock' something like, he totally sucks.. is there a better translation? : )

  • u are the best!!

  • haha! not the best... but not so bad either! : )

  • thanks so much!

  • Thanks man, this really helped with my algebra 2 homework

  • glad it helps!

  • thanks joe!

  • Thank you so much :D

  • no problem!

  • Thank you very much, sorry to bother you

  • no bother at all! feel free to ask! i just may tell you it will have to wait : ) i am a busy guy this semester : )

  • ok, i have gotten slammed with work! some delay!

  • patrickJMT, can you show how to find the piecewise function, using only the graph?

  • i will do an example or two in a day or two!!!

  • Oh goodness. Thank you! I almost cried because after hours of trying to figure it out I couldn't. My friend helped explain it to me then linked me these vids. Thank you soooo much! You have no idea how much this has helped! I have a quiz tomorrow that I'm hoping on acing.

  • sweet! glad that this helps! i know that graphing these piecewise functions has given my students BIG problems in the past, so you are in good company! : ) with math, never give up! it is frustrating for everyone!!

  • Thank you so much for the video.

But what if you're only given the graph and have to find the piecewise function? how do you do that then?

  • of all the math tutors on youtube, i think patrickjmt is one of the best, along with lutemann, math1105... and interalgebra... thank you so much for your excellent examples and explanations.

  • thank you very much for the kind comment. i appreciate it : ) it is nice to know that my many, many hours of making these videos is helping someone out : )

  • so WHAT's the DOMAIN AND RANGE of the two...?

  • THNX SO MUCH!!

so WHAT's the DOMAIN AND RANGE of the two...?

  • thank you so much i couldnt understand da circle and dot but i get know....!!!!

  • Great job man. A lot of help!

  • nice explaining

  • OMG!!!!!!!!!!! My professor already explained this a million times using the slope-intercept form and I don't understand anything! This substitution method is much easier- THANKS!!!! My final exam is tomorrow; this is a lot of help!

  • my pleasure!

  • Thanks bro
