They were never actually straight-up BM. They were Avantgarde. BM bands do not use the elaborate musical landscapes these guys do. On some of their tracks they use a full orchestra.

I've read and heard Shagrath say on multiple occasions that he does not consider his band nor has he ever considered it as a pure Black Metal. He recently declared that in an interview with The Daily Rock Show. Nor do I. They may look it but their music is far to complex and ''clean'' to be pure Black Metal.

Nowadays, you're right. Even Silenoz barely wears any corpsepaint anymore, if he even does at all. I like them for their music, however, and could care less what the band calls themselves.
