No Special interest! None! Why do we need them? They are small groups that effect a majority of the country. If you want the government out of everything then don't you think you should take away the biggest influence on politicians? They're not going there with just a voice ALL special interest have money to buy.
I concur with your theory and if I understood it correctly then the answer is simple......all we have to do is hold public officials to a higher standard. Correct?
can i just say about the size of government. its usually in proportion to the population. so. if you want a smaller government. kill yourself:) j/k but the fact remains, federal government is in control of 50odd states! now if you all seceded that would bring that problem right down. however, that would also mean big companies can wipe the floor with you. a double edged sword.
Great Insight.....There is no accountability and the media helps that along (like the Reid situation). I also think that no one wants to think their Senator is corrupt - it's always all the "other" guys - like, "If only they could all be like the guy from our state" - make me vomit. P.S. Good people of Nevada - you've been sold out - wake up - Reid didn't even cut you in on his healthcare handouts.
IMNSHO, the only real, feasible way to end the corruption in and of our government is to amend the Constitution to force term limits on all of Congress. It is professional politicians of all stripes that have brought us to the current situation.
@wlchase Actually, the best way to end it and save our country is to do what our founders told us to do and that is to abolish any form of Government that's destructive to the liberties, rights and happiness of the people, who have the ultimate authority and power over the governments-not just at the voting booths-but any time. The people also have the authority and duty to revoke the authorities, powers, positions and titles of those in violations and institute new govt. by constitutional laws.
Politicians are smarter than doctors about health care, smarter in War than Generals, smarter than Economists on the economy, You mean Al Gore is not a global warming scientist?
I think a way to solve alot of the concern over lobbying is to make all campaign contributions whatsoever public. Politicians who don't want the public to think they're influenced by a donor could, in that case, simply refuse the money.
There are situations where changing technology or limits in the Constitution make old business models obsolete but entrenched corporations try to use the power of government to stop innovation.and progress. This is a very real form of corruption and we've seen it in copyright, trademark and patent law as well as the automobile industry. These particular special interests represent very real corporate / government corruption.
i've been saying this for years. if you don't like corporations lobbying, then get rid of the ability of the government to have an effect on the economy and on businesses. Get rid of that power, and there will be no lobbying.
Been a fan for a while... but, it really is time for a better camera... Sadly, in this day and age, content, very often matters little (as is clear from our Gov/Enslavers)... Many will be "turned-off" by the poor rez. and lighting... While I don't think you should turn into the "Nightly News"... A quality upgrade would be a huge boon to your message...
I think you're going too far in saying that the corporations are only lobbying to avoid being "destroyed."
there's a difference between lobbying to stay in existence and lobbying and/or funding research in order to maintain their ability to make exorbitant profits, sometimes dishonestly. I'm not saying every company does this, but take the tobacco industry for example. They funded tons of research trying to convince people that cigarettes are totally safe. I don't know about you, but if (cont)
a company is willing to pay people to hide the fact that their product is potentially deadly just to make their profits, that is totally immoral, and yet similar things happen all the time.
Over time, the tobacco industry has been for the most part exposed, and yet they haven't been "destroyed."
Lee, thanks for the clear explanation of terms. We need more videos like this, so as to better negotiate the heated rhetoric on here that pases for "debate".
Another gem.... hahah i like the ending... "And that's how the world works"
you rock man and I hope you realize the influence you actually have here on youtube. The more you pound it out the more people will begin to questions thier false ideas on "how the world works" haha peace.
Lee you should mention that the reason corporations can BECOME so powerful and overbearing with no competition is because of the expansive government passing restrictive policies allowing them a barrier to competition. This is also why they can raise prices without detriment.
"Now if Gov't was smaller their would be less money to hand out to people." ... ?
If Gov't was limited to only spending revenue collected through taxation, then their would be less money to hand out.
If we had sound money, the ability for the Gov't to issue endless amounts of Fiat money by exchanging Treasury Bonds for Federal Reserve Notes, then Gov't would be limited regardless of its size or number of members. It would be self-limiting.
I'd vote for (libertarian) Ron Paul, but vote for a mainstream conservative (Reagan/Limbaugh/Palin) Republican? Hell no! ALL corporatist Rep/Dem should be voted OUT! Congress needs more people like (progressive/liberal) Kucinich and libertarian Paul, who actually share a good deal of common ground: foreign policy, MIC waste, individual rights, war on drugs, the Fed, etc. Kucinich and Paul should ditch their parties - for GOOD this time.
I do like your news videos, but I really enjoyed your last one because you made a very clear argument and an excellent case against socialized medicine. I work in the healthcare industry and it has been going downhill since last summer. Hospitals are being forced to make drastic budget cuts and are having to either cut staff or inventory to dangerous levels. People will die because a hospital ran out of an emergency medication due to reduced inventories and errors due to understaffing.
The only way to end special interests is to limit the role of government strictly to protecting person and property, enforcing contracts and national defence. Note: national defence does not mean nation building, policing the world, and spreading democracy.
The general welfare clause of the Constitution is supposed to ensure that the govt may legislate only in the general welfare, and not for any special interest.
It is supposed to defend our equal, individual rights to life, liberty and property. In doing so, it acts in the general welfare. But when it gives a special advantage to any special interest group, then it violates the general welfare clause.
There are many investigations of very diverse sort that can give certain benefit to the humanity that are very expensive and risky. Because they are expensive, small and medium companyes can't afford thoose investigations. Because they are risky, no goverment want to spend money on them. So, for many reasons, corporations are needed or humanity won't progress.
nice video lee ! i like it when Your not so combative . When he talks calm i dont mind his videos . but when he fights with everyone i really dislike it . its good when he trys to teach us what he knows rather then attack us when we dont .
I think you missed his point. I think the bigger point is that THERE is NO actual debate, NO actual argument for what is BEST for the PEOPLE, the majority-JUST a process of BUYING support through lobbying-I hear your argument and I hear his, however, BUISNESSES are NOT GIVING us what we need, they give US what they THINK we need-Most people do not know any better-SHAME on CORPORATE AMERICA, shame on D.C., shame on people who THINK the system is GOOD and FINE with current lobbying procedures-PEACE
"BUISNESSES are NOT GIVING us what we need, they give US what they THINK we need."
The emphasis on particular words is completely erratic.
Anyways, businesses in fact do provide what the American people want and need and here is why. The American people decide what they want and need through dollar voting. If a Business fails to provide us with our wants and needs, they don't make money... period. The incentive is inherent within the system.
I disagree...if your choices are shit, shit with perfume, or piss and you have NO knowledge or power to make things yourself , then your stuck...and since their are less and less stores, only big chains, their is NO choice...Check out United Fruit and Monsanto...Wake UP, People!
Please read this, understand it and spread it around. What we're talking about has been going on for over 100 years. And that problem is state enabled corporatism.
If politicians could be fired for the mistakes they make like an employee of the people should be, then Dear Leader zerO would be fired for the systemic failure of the intelligence debacle he caused by denegrating them and turning his dog AG Holder onto them. But we have to wait till the election and by then people will have forgotten about the reasons to fire him.
i dont like any special interest group that gives money to politcians
one simple reason being that a richer company (say tobaco) could easily out way an other company (healthy living) even if the other company has a far greater cause
the 2nd point is i dont like people giving money to politcians, they already get paid good wages and re election money should be a small limited amount
legislation should be bought through the majority of the people wanting something, not through money
Agreed. I'm so sick of these idiot bleeding hearts and neocons who have NO clue what they're talking about, ranting against "corporations" and "special interests" or "the elite" like they're all one big group with a clear label on them. Attacking big business because it's big business is just stupid. Ironically, these blowhards are supposedly trying to help out "the greater good" by putting a ton of hard-working Americans out of jobs. It's nothing short of sheer stupidity and ignorance.
Also, about TJ in general, he's crap when it comes to politics because he's a dreamer. He doesn't really think about the economic side of it and supports opposing systems. He has no clear logical path when it comes to politics. What do you expect from a guy that gets most of his opinions from Rock Stars and Comedians anyway? It's like voodoo..and assortment of beliefs with no clear reasoning behind them. Also, he's trying to be a shock jock, so you got to take what he says with a grain of salt.
Good point. Trying to stop a corporation from lobbying is most easily done by minimizing government power in the first place. The worst thing a special interest like Monsanto can do is to use the government's power to wipe out competition and stuff like that. The Government shouldn't have that power in the first place. It seems easier to go back to a limited government than to control every other group of people out there.
If government didn't have the power that it does, there would be no need to lobby them. Its much easier to buy politicians than it is to compete straight up in a market economy. I
These sort of videos are more likely to grab thoose who are on the fence. sure the more attack-like ones are fun to watch for us who already agree with you but all you end up doing is preaching to the choir. I do like your visual deconstruction videos and they are vital in some instances to make the point. but it would be nice to see you do a nice balance of sound minded arguments and some of the more entertaining ones.
I only watch some yours videos becos your thingkin is so exotic and odd for me that is amuse me some level.
You like think that humans newer develope out of some evil thinks like terrorism and something no mater how negotianally and hippy ewerypady try be not even like milljon years scope. So becos peaceful utopi wher ewery bady is nice other like newer born out of humanity. You like think thats why hippys are wrong, and wars and executions need keep people in order.
Holy shit, quit commenting, you fucking imbecile. Your spelling is so atrocious ("becos", "thingkin", "milljon", etc.), not to mention your grammar ("that is amuse me", etc.), that no one can understand you. You make no fucking sense. You're clearly a deluded, uneducated fucktard who's either on drugs or hasn't graduated the 2nd grade. You're as stupid as they come. Go fuck yourself.
Hey! Has anyone read F.A. HAYEK's "The Road to Serfdom" I picked it up over a year ago because I heard it was one of P.M. Margaret Thatcher's favorite books. She is a Person who ACTUALLY made DRASTIC economic changes in her country. B.t.w. I'm not posting this looking for an argument regarding Thatchers policies. Just wonder what the book is like. I took several economic courses in University but I'm no Milton Friedman or Adam Smith!! lol
Agreed. Both PETA and the humane society are both Special interests.both want to do basicly the same thing but with diffrent ways of getting there. I hate PETA but like the humane society. Then you have the NRA and Brady Campaign. Polar opposites. I like the NRA and Hate the Brady Campaign. Everything is not black and white and neither are people.
Since GOVERNMENT wields so much power, individuals and companies MUST band together to "influence" the power of the government, which now has the ability to make or break an individual, business or group of citizens.
We enabled this, and now we complain about it. You're absolutely right, we need a much smaller government.
But dont you believe that corporations have immense power via various monoploies and arnt they in league with government and various NGOs to wield this power in a fascistic manner? Democracy is left to the side whilst we bail out banks, introduce cap and trade and xfer wealth via globalisation ect. Isnt the free market and corpocracy ultimately mutualy exclusive ideologies?
If corporations didn't "provide goods and services we want and need" then wouldn't smaller businesses make the shit we want but don't really need? Wouldn't that actually help the country's economy more than pandering to corporations that outsource shitloads of jobs to foreigners?
I used to say I didn't like special interests, but now I contribute to certain organizations that look out for the issues I care about, and those are special interests. I used to say I didn't like corporations, but I realize that I like their products, so I guess I do like corporations. I think you are right when you have to be more specific about it. Also, the government should be smaller. You have a good point there, but certain people (e.g. gov) want to convince us otherwise.
Special interests aren't really just a group of people that care, its mainly a pool of money that cares. Since corporations are the most likely to get benefit from spending money on lobbying, its not really too much of a stretch to say most special interest does not have the interest of the public at heart.
Corporation- Noun: An ingenious device for obtaining individual profit without individual responsibility. Sounds like a politician. I guess there are socialist and capitalist pigs. And I guess I'd rather be free and not buy some asshole's product.
Lee is saying this because he probably works for a lobbyist. Ron Paul libertarians happily gloss over the lobbyist issue as they pander for "less government" because Ron Paul takes in quite a bit of Federal Money for Texas and lobbyist dollars as well.
"GOP", democrat, libertarian... bribes are bribes.
Goldman Sachs is bribing the government to steal from the taxpayers and put it into their own pockets with HR 4173.
I noticed how the big tent GOP ignores the unethical issue of TARP too. BS
1. if a business has to lobby to stay in business, they don't deserve to be in business. If there's a threat, USE THE THIRD BRANCH OF GOVERNMENT. Creating a 4th is an increase in government. Duh.
2. a populist democracy or individual liberty does not work with the bribing or the CONFLICT OF INTEREST of politicians. As we just witnessed with the bailouts that YOU ARE CONDONING.
You make a really good point about why government should be smaller. For whatever reason, I've never put 2 + 2 together with large government and special interests. That is one of the best arguments against big government (one of the countless arguments against it...). You do a really good job with your videos.
The only real way to keep the kind of corruption we're seeing today out of power is the application of absolute individual rights. The only politico-economic system in existence that does this is Laissez-faire Capitalism, i.e. the absolute seperation of state and economics, relegating the power of the government in sum to the retaliatory use of force in society: the cop on the corner, the soldier in the field, and the judge on the bench. There would be no avenue for corrupt lobbying.
If government wasn't so goddamn big and omnipotent, if there were clear lines in the sand that everyone understood government CANNOT cross, then those vultures and lobbyists in Washington would disappear. Legislators and Presidents would stop being so goddamn important, and go back to living their own private lives, instead of trying run yours. But that's not, ahem, htww. Who knew in 1999 that Congress could simply nationalize all the banks? No one. But they did. There is NOTHING they can't do.
The main reason why "special interests" run Washington is obvious: money finds a way. When you put governments in charge of literally HALF the nation's GDP, the people with the most to gain will find a way to influence how it get spent. When you throw in the fact Federal, state, and local regulations tie down what can and can't be done with the OTHER half of the GDP, those with the most money and the most influence will find a way to influence the process. It's Ayn Rand's "Aristocracy of Pull."
Funny, it isn't big business that scares me, at least I know what their about, money. It's the leftest, tree huggers that always scare me, they seem to garner more power in WA these days than anyone else & they frighten me more than anything else. Their ends rarely justify their means & they tend to have more lobbying/bribbing power than the mafia has hit men.
As long as the government has the power to regulate people and regulate business, there will always be lobbyists and corruption. It is inevitable.
The only way to avoid corruption is to limit the government to three powers: 1 - Military Defense, 2 - Domestic Police, 3 - Judicial System (to prosecute criminals and settle disputes)
We like all of your stuff, Lee. It's the straight up information we like and watching you make a rock solid argument in the realm of reality instead of emotional, half thought out conclusions makes us keep coming back.
I loved the concise monologue with no intro movie/music over the repetitive intro with no or very little variety.
Oh, and I also agree with the substance of the message. The worst special interests are those that condemn all other special interests. It is hypocrisy in its most destructive form, simply because it is perpetuated by ignorance.
ofc it isnt but it will stabilize the inflation and hopefully prevent the production of elastic currency.
Only way to stop corruption is to make people more moral and since that isn't gonna happen I suggest the next best thing and that is to scale down government and make it more attractive to educate one self to a physician, scientist or teacher, what the world really needs, instead of politicians and lawyers. mho
Lee, I agree in part about what you said applies to some corporations, ones trying to stay in existence. But there are others such as Goldman Sacks that are part of the Government. Look at all the Goldman people in Government. Look at AIG paying Goldman 100cents on the dollar that AIG owed to Goldman while others are lucky to receive 5cents on the dollars.
Shrink government, then Goldman Sachs has no interest in investing in government. Further, other investment banks could stand up to Goldman Sachs because the government wouldn't be so pretective, probably.
Investment in buying politicians has a very high return.
Yes, one of the forms of fascism. But that's something that happens when government gets big. Either the corporations get control of the government or government get control of the corporations. I consider them different means to the same ends and not worth distinguishing between unless examining how that particular state arose.
JohnBreadForger, Great point. I do agree about Government being too big. I run a small business and the regulations are horrendous. I wish it was simply contract law. Both sides agree before hand and have to abide by the contract they both agreed to.
Agreed. Lobbying is constitutionally guaranteed (I think) and bribes are a form of corruption. But I don't remember mentioning lobbying.
But the point I was making was that enabling high returns on contributions/bribes creates incentives to make them. And that's what large modern government does.
Even Andrew Jackson wrote extensively about the Bank War. If lobbying was "legitimate" why would it include an exchange of money? Lobbying IS bribery.
I definitely prefer these one-topic videos better. It gives you time to expand on a topic and helps your audience understand WHY it is important rather than THAT it is important.
He actually does have a second channel called "HowTheWorldWorks," as his first channel that he no longer uses is "Advocate1234" as Devil's Advocate, instead of simply Lee Doren. Good stuff in his archives over there to check out.
rangerdanger, Dittos to you also. Government should be shrunk but that doesn't make it right for Goldman Sacks and the likes to have a free pass to bribe Government.
I think both types of videos are fine. I like the "news summary" ones that fire off a rapid list of topics, and sometimes I think a longer, more focused video is necessary. Don't limit yourself to just one type of video. If someone deserves pwnage, then give it to them.
As a Libertarian I tend to agree that the problem isn't the corporations (special interest groups) but the bloated government that has the ability to bestow favors or hurt pretty much any group it pleases. But I am still not satisfied with the answer given here, this needs a more in depth answer, or perhaps a simpler one. Either way I hope this is addressed again in another video of yours.
as a libertarian, you oppose "big government" so only a few people with too much power can take bribes to grow the government? What is Goldman Sachs? They're a government run bank.
I thought my comments made sense in regards to Lee's video. Considering I haven't made my mind up entirely regarding this topic and was asking for a follow up video, I would say it is you who "makes little sense" by criticizing me. ;)
As an anarcho-capitalist, I see more power to influence the structure of our daily lives if corporations had no gov't on which to fall back. The gov't is an extortion racket with a monopoly over the land & laws of a mass population at the point of a gun, but businesses & corps are institutions which provide structure to our lives as long as we VOLUNTARILY support them.
If they aren't demanded, they fail in the absence of a gov't.
Now you've gone and done it. I really liked the HTWW views on news, but this format is a great source for uneducated comments or debate. I guess you'll have to do two videos from now on Lee. Hehehe.
I sometimes agree with what you're saying and I sometimes don't. But I've considered unsubscribing a few times because of your arrogance in your regular news reporting. So I for one endorse this down-to-earth way of making videos. What I would also want to see more of is investigative reporting like you did against the climate alarmists. Oh and if you see this, please get a better way of recording audio for the lectures you're posting.
Another very good video! Quote win. I worry however, that if those big companies went unchecked by government, they would gain too much monetary power and then become like a big government themselves, controlling what we buy and how we buy it. I feel like if the government, and ideally the collective, had control over that money, it would be put to better use. I think the problem is not big government, but the lack of citizen control of that government, and unintelligent people in command.
It was a cool video! Many moderate Democrats have had it with the Obama Admin and the Democratic party the same as Neocons, Paleocons, independents, and Libertarians. Now is the time for conservatives to be nice to those moderate Dems to further build a base to get the Democrats out of Congress!
If we eliminated money from the election and lobby process we would get better legislation. Permit lobbying, but not with money. That would give our representatives more consideration for their constituents. I would even favor a tax as the only source for campaign funds to be distributed equally among all candidates who qualify through a petition process. It would go a long way to curtailing corruption from special interest opportunists and unfair deals for big corps.
The thing is, paying off a politician with your own money is a voluntary trade. When that politician goes and introduces new spending measures using tax dollars, they are forcing the taxpayer to part with their cash. The only consistent stance to take is to prevent any legislation, regardless of content
"paying off a politician with your own money is a voluntary trade."
We pay $1.34 trillion in income taxes to the government. Corporate America only pays $300 billion in income taxes while WE pay more in sales tax.
WE pay Congress's salaries. If they want bribes, work in the private sector.
Look. Corporate AMerica only pays millions in bribes to fuck the taxpayers over in legislation, ie. TARP. The taxpayers already pay enough, we DESERVE preference over corporate.
It is impossible to eliminate money from the election and lobby process. So much power over so much economic interest can not be stopped, and If you made it illegal they would just break the law or find a loophole. It's pretty much like saying that making recreational drugs illegal will stop the drug business.
The only effective solution is to make the government smaller, not larger as you propose.
I don't propose larger gov. Actually, I prefer no gov. Part of the reason gov is so big is because it accommodates so many special interests, creating massive and convoluted regulation and bureaucracy. Yes, there would be a campaign tax, but by minimizing rules and regulations, the cost and size of of gov could be controlled, and the people better represented.
I was not thinking so much about the proposed tax (though that's important too) but about the increased regulation. If we don't want regulation I don't think it's a good idea to implement even more laws. Generally I don't think that government can be controlled by use of government.
I think government is out of control. I don't know what rules made it possible for mercenary lobbying, but its not in the Constitution. I would think it might involve abolishing whatever rules allow for lobbying - probably originated during the progressive era of the early 1900s.
I agree that lobbyism is part of the problem, but I just don't see how it can be abolished as long as there is a huge economic incentive to keep it going. Where there is enough wealth to be gain people will find a way to gain it, regardless of the law. Just like the drug trade and prostitution.
You're right, but it should be. Mercenary lobbying is a huge conflict of interest leading to corruption and criminality and a large part of why we are nearing or in a fascist state now. In 2008 lobbyists spent $3.2 billion, that's $17.4 million for every day Congress was in session. $32,523 per legislator per day according to open secrets (dot) org. Imagine the difference in legislation if the representatives actually served their constituents. We are the least of their concerns.
I don't believe the politicians will ever serve the people, they do it for themselves, just like company owners usually are not in it for the benefit of others. If government was reduced there would be less incentive to spend money on lobbying.
Yeah. Rather than we controlling gov, as intended, the gov now controls us. Flip-flop. We are moving towards totalitarianism. Guess it's the natural evolution of a contrived government. Disappointing that most have resigned themselves to that inevitability rather than consider the possibility of non-consent and the moral courage that would entail. I appreciate the dialogue.
So do I and It's nice to discuss with someone who's interesting in exchanging opinions rather than insults. It's a rarity on YouTube.
The shift towards totalitarianism is going even faster in my country (Denmark) so during the last tears I have been looking anxiously to the US and its political climate, as you have always been the lighthouse of freedom. If you fall to totalitarianism we certainly will too. And it scares the s*hit out of me.
Well some companies shouldn't exist or at the very least should be severely regulated. It is not a good idea for monsanto to patent every plant on earth and own the rights to all seeds while lobbying the government to make the penalty for me growing a tomato in my own back yard death by lethal injection. See that's why people are just a tad concerned about corporate interests...
So you worry about businesses growing monopolies through patents. But who creates the legal basis for patents and who enforces them? The government does and I think politicians should be "severely regulated", not companies.
Lee: I think you should go back to bashing the Young Turk(ey)s. That Cenk guy is polluting the minds of the American Youth!! lol They also clog up You Tube with all their Progessive/Hippie Videos!!
I think that the reason why people dislike 'corporate' special interests is because if a company uses the government to gain a commercial advantage over its rivals by either getting favourable legislation or not facing consequences when they break competition law or whatever (say as Tesco or Lloyds does with Labour in the UK, for example) then this isn't the fair, free market. A company's success should be based on it's ability to deliver what customers want .
Corporations are the people, Mutual funds are basically, C Corps that own shares of other C Corps, that are owned by almost everyone in some form or another. Demonizing corporations is what stupid people do. Many bad things that happen in the name of CORPORATIONS is done because GOVERNMENT encourages the biggest of the corporations, to beat down the smaller players using government rules and regulations. Big corps use Gov as the gate keeper to competition of wood be competitors.
Thanks Mr. Doren. Now I can use your explanation of what "special interests" are to pwn people who constantly parroting that simpleton view again and again.
That video you have linked has a link to a a a page that TOTALLY lies about the health care bill. I know for a fact 52% of Indiana residence do not want the public option or this health care bill. The way the "early" health care polls were done there were no details and was based on getting affordable health care which those bills as a fact get neither afforable nor grants you better healthcare. Evan Bayh is actually going to pay a heavy price for the way he is voting as of late.
I think a good mix of news videos and these sort of "conversation" videos would be a great way to run the channel. Definitely liked the John Green response video. Liked this one too.
Also, I just bought Paper Towns without realizing the actual vlogbrother John Green wrote it. A pleasant surprise, and a good story so far.
No Special interest! None! Why do we need them? They are small groups that effect a majority of the country. If you want the government out of everything then don't you think you should take away the biggest influence on politicians? They're not going there with just a voice ALL special interest have money to buy.

"BUISNESSES are NOT GIVING us what we need, they give US what they THINK we need."
The emphasis on particular words is completely erratic.
Anyways, businesses in fact do provide what the American people want and need and here is why. The American people decide what they want and need through dollar voting. If a Business fails to provide us with our wants and needs, they don't make money... period. The incentive is inherent within the system.

one simple reason being that a richer company (say tobaco) could easily out way an other company (healthy living) even if the other company has a far greater cause

BS
therealcaptobvious 2 years ago 2
EPIC FAIL!
Sorry Lee, this is where I draw the line.
1. if a business has to lobby to stay in business, they don't deserve to be in business.
3. Our tax dollars don't secure our liberties? Thanks.
therealcaptobvious 2 years ago 3
You make a really good point about why government should be smaller. For whatever reason, I've never put 2 + 2 together with large government and special interests. That is one of the best arguments against big government (one of the countless arguments against it...). You do a really good job with your videos.
JKforUA 2 years ago
The only real way to keep the kind of corruption we're seeing today out of power is the application of absolute individual rights. The only politico-economic system in existence that does this is Laissez-faire Capitalism, i.e. the absolute seperation of state and economics, relegating the power of the government in sum to the retaliatory use of force in society: the cop on the corner, the soldier in the field, and the judge on the bench. There would be no avenue for corrupt lobbying.
Nelapidae 2 years ago 3
If government wasn't so goddamn big and omnipotent, if there were clear lines in the sand that everyone understood government CANNOT cross, then those vultures and lobbyists in Washington would disappear. Legislators and Presidents would stop being so goddamn important, and go back to living their own private lives, instead of trying run yours. But that's not, ahem, htww. Who knew in 1999 that Congress could simply nationalize all the banks? No one. But they did. There is NOTHING they can't do.
littlebier8 2 years ago
The main reason why "special interests" run Washington is obvious: money finds a way. When you put governments in charge of literally HALF the nation's GDP, the people with the most to gain will find a way to influence how it get spent. When you throw in the fact Federal, state, and local regulations tie down what can and can't be done with the OTHER half of the GDP, those with the most money and the most influence will find a way to influence the process. It's Ayn Rand's "Aristocracy of Pull."

Lee, I agree in part about what you said applies to some corporations, ones trying to stay in existence. But there are others such as Goldman Sacks that are part of the Government. Look at all the Goldman people in Government. Look at AIG paying Goldman 100cents on the dollar that AIG owed to Goldman while others are lucky to receive 5cents on the dollars.
jimbobubbadj 2 years ago 3
Shrink government, then Goldman Sachs has no interest in investing in government. Further, other investment banks could stand up to Goldman Sachs because the government wouldn't be so pretective, probably.
Investment in buying politicians has a very high return.

jimbobubbadj 2 years ago 3
Yes, one of the forms of fascism. But that's something that happens when government gets big. Either the corporations get control of the government or government get control of the corporations. I consider them different means to the same ends and not worth distinguishing between unless examining how that particular state arose.
JohnBreadForger 2 years ago
JohnBreadForger, Great point. I do agree about Government being too big. I run a small business and the regulations are horrendous. I wish it was simply contract law. Both sides agree before hand and have to abide by the contract they both agreed to.

Since corps run the world, vote with money.

If we eliminated money from the election and lobby process we would get better legislation. Permit lobbying, but not with money. That would give our representatives more consideration for their constituents. I would even favor a tax as the only source for campaign funds to be distributed equally among all candidates who qualify through a petition process. It would go a long way to curtailing corruption from special interest opportunists and unfair deals for big corps.
matahaari 2 years ago
The thing is, paying off a politician with your own money is a voluntary trade. When that politician goes and introduces new spending measures using tax dollars, they are forcing the taxpayer to part with their cash. The only consistent stance to take is to prevent any legislation, regardless of content
TheRealFallenDemon 2 years ago
@TheRealFallenDemon,
"paying off a politician with your own money is a voluntary trade."
TARP. The taxpayers already pay enough, we DESERVE preference over corporate.
therealcaptobvious 2 years ago 3

Me too! Thank you.

Well some companies shouldn't exist or at the very least should be severely regulated. It is not a good idea for monsanto to patent every plant on earth and own the rights to all seeds while lobbying the government to make the penalty for me growing a tomato in my own back yard death by lethal injection. See that's why people are just a tad concerned about corporate interests...
tgz1000 2 years ago
So you worry about businesses growing monopolies through patents. But who creates the legal basis for patents and who enforces them? The government does and I think politicians should be "severely regulated", not companies.

Very good. One of your best yet. Defining selective outrage needs to be done, you did a masterful job of it.

great point about corporations and special interests.
Along similar lines, does anyone know what makes a corporation, a group of people.
What makes a group of people merely a special interest... possibly when they are only doing something to benefit themselves "only"

I like these clarification/explanation videos. Some more peppered in here and there would be great in my opinion.

It would be great if you'd do these more simple videos more often but kept doing the news update ones just as often as b4.
