I freakin love Deans performance!! I saw them at key arena in Seattle, sadly though, he didnt sing, and this song wasn't played:(. In fact, Foreigner was better that night!! Sorry Journey fans..
I love the comment on how Deen should take over lead vocals. First of all, he's stuck behind a drum kit. Deen singing 2 songs is no match to Arnel being able to sing a whole concert day after day. Try singing continuously for two hours sometime, and then try to do it again the next day. It's a nightmare.Deen's a smoker, too, so there's no way he could be the lead singer. Arnel & Deen are two amazing rockers and great, kind men.
Ah come on, we've all sung while drumming on the steering wheel - while driving down the freeway at that. Of course, we don't SOUND like that, except in our own heads
Every time Deen takes over lead vocals, he schools Arnel. Deen understands phrasing. He understands melody. He understands good tone. He understands good vowell production.
Arnel can not sing this good when all he has to do is worry about singing.
Deen is crazy. want to hear him sing one of the more upbeat songs though, see how he does in that. wheel in the sky/ stone in love? escape? would be epic..
DEEN and STEVE PERRY have the same TECHNIQUE in singing, you can never hurt your throat at all, amazing singer and drummer!!!!!!!!!!!!! MORE POWER ARNEL and JOURNEY.
Drumming like this is fantastic, Singing like that is amazing. Being able to combine both at the same time is simply out of this wolrd!! Deen rules, Big time!
Deen has been with Journey since they reformed with Steve Augeri back in 1997(?). Great drummer, great resume', helluva singer too, but he couldn't handle the Journey song catalog full-time.
Having seen the current line-up of Journey live myself, I gotta say that while I personally love Arnel as lead singer, Deen OWNED the songs that he sang live (this song being one of 'em. I think the other one was "I'll Be Alright Without You")
@ViciousAlienKlown i beg to differ!! on one hand, there is no doubt that deen catronovo is a good singer, but on the other, once he started singing the song, instantly i could tell that he is not as good as steve perry... Deen castronovo may be able to sound like steve perry when he sings the high notes ( sometimes his voice cracks) but his voice is not as low, as husky, or as powerful and PERRY's!
I think having him and Arnel make a great tag team. Arnel's got the stage presence and gets the audience involved, and having deen gives Arnel a couple of breaks. Plus Deen definately couldn't sing lead and drum a whole concert. great combination of singers.
What's really messed up is I have been a fan of DC since Tony Macalpine, and the Cacophony days...he introuced me to power drumming. I always knew this mans tallent behind the drum kit was incredible---but to hear him sing the "off-limits" vocals of Steve Perry---and actually pay it the respect it deserves, makes me respect him even more. He is a very special tallent.
this is amazing, obviously not like the original but to the haters, lets see YOU do it better. i also love arnel, but i would love to see him at least make an attempt to sing this, even if a few of the notes are hard for him. i'll be he could do ok, but he probably wouldn't be as good as deen cause as many of you have stated, his range is a bit higher.
Deen Castronovo (born August 17, 1965) is a drummer who has played in various bands, including Cacophony, Bad English, Journey, The Enemy, Wild Dogs, Dr. Mastermind, Hardline, Planet Us, Soul Sirkus, Social Distortion, and Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler's G/Z/R, as well as in backing bands for Ozzy Osbourne, Steve Vai, Paul Rodgers and Matthew Ward. He also played on the song "Smoke Of The Revolution" on the Neal Schon solo album Late Nite.
@hooknshlimer - I read a quote by Deen that if he had to sing full-time his voice would be done by song #3 or 4. It takes a lot of vocal stamina to sing Journey's set list.
the reason why Deen isn't the lead singer is because he says he has a little bit of stage fright and feels more comfortable singing behind the drum set. Plus, it would be hard to work the crowd from behind there for a whole concert lol.
Of course, no one compares to Steve, but Castronovo is far better than any of the replacements they've gotten for Steve so far. Why not let him sing lead? He's much better than Arnel. I wish someone would kick Neal Schon's egomanical ass clean out of the band.
dtich arnel and put deen on vocals full time man. adn they don't even need a new drummer...deen can do both perfectly. this man is pure genius and way better than arnel
What does Arnel do while Deen is singing Mother Father live? I can't see Arnel on stage. Why did Neal bother with Arnel when Deen has a good singing voice and could have sung all the sngs for them? Oh yeah because Deen has his 'own' singing voice and doesn't try to copy a certain former lead singer of that band .This seemed to be the main criteria for any new lead singer now.
To the diehard Arnel fans who claim that Deen does not have real legit vocal power, listen to Steve Perry sing this song live. It gave Perry troulbe because it covers a wide range of scale and it requires a great deal of dynamic range as well. Also the way the song is mixed both live and in the studio, the vocals would fall apart in a hurry if Steve or Deen could not produce a good focussed clean vocal tone.
Yeah Castronovo nailed this one to the wall. I have nothing against Arnel but that was one of Journey's biggest mistake. I am sure he would be awesome in an Asian version of the group but Perry or Castronovo he isnt. WAKE UP GUYS. A reunion with Perry and your current line up minus Arnel would most likely sell out every stadium.. WOuld make for an awesome tour.
Deen you scare me. being a drummer myself, I know that whats going down in this video is close to impossible, but Deen Castronovo defeats all odds....jeez that's amazing. love you Deen. your the reason I play!
this isn't very old. This is off the bonus DVD that came with the new album. It's an Arnel concert...it's actually Arnel that yells "DEAN!" when the song starts.

Its easier said than done.... they dont make money out of people watching Journey videos on YT... with so much respect to Deen's vocal power, have you put into account that when this band tours, they play almost every other night in a different city if not time zone... do you have any idea how exhausting that is to a person's vocal cord? try it...
@mutedloud Providing that Deen wanted to and felt comfortable with the lead singer role, all Deen would have to do is hire some top run studio drummer to play drums on all of the songs that it was too much for him to sing and play on at the same time, and then get some top rung vocal coach to work with him to strenghten his voice, and he would be able to to a whole show vocal wise. Arnel only has a job becuase Deen is a bit too shy by nature to be a lead vocals guy.
I miss listening to real music, made by real musicians. Everything is so cookie cutter now with all of the sampling and mixing going on now days. Nobody can make their own music anymore. They're too busy copying, sampling or remaking other peoples music. Sad to say,the music industry has no real talent anymore.
absolutely.......there is no more musical bands anymore....where everyone can hold there own. Do you think Hannah Montana can 'sing' and even tap her foot at the same time? Fuck me but most music sucks now
dude fuckin right deen sings better than arnel! when i first saw this i wondering the same thing. why he is not the one as lead. i guess they asked him to do it but he declined for some reason or another. he does sound the closest to perry without being perry. fuckin guy blows arnel out of the water with this song! im filipino by the way, love my country and countrymen. but face it, deen is the shizz!
@unknowndeoxys00 Yeah, I think he has a purer voice, but Arnel has the showmanship. and I think they learned from Augeri that they need to give Arnel's voice a break from time to time or else he'll burnout in a few years just like Augeri did.
Listening to Deen singing this powerfull song, it makes you wonder why he didn't become the lead singer. He blows away Arnel real quick with this one!
the thing I love about deen is that you'd look at him. then he'd sing, and you'd think, fuck me?! is that him singing?! I just didn't expect that voice! to come out of him anyway! :)
I told Dean, at a gig he was at for an old band mate. He is one of the best drummers Portland OR. has ever had that was when he was jamming with Ozzy. He was real cool.
Keeping beat and singing isnt very hard as some of you know but actually DRUMMING likeDean does is truely hard. He proves in every show that a drummer isnt a caveman with some stick his displays of humility, musicianship, and drumming are an insperation to all. Hats off to you my friend.
i was with him one eve last week----he's back in town. He was goofin' off---and sang 2 lines of this in my ear....i mellllted. Being silly or not---it still sounded Angelic. AND---he's verrrry funny n cute. Full of humility and realizes he's been given a gift, he never takes for granted.
I am a huge Journey fan. This is simply amazing to watch and listen to. I am musician and you have to really appreciate what this guy is doing.
I sometimes get a little agitated by all of the comparisons to these singers with Steve Perry. Remember, without Steve Perry even existing you might not even know these guys! All of them have shaped themselves around Steve's sound. What greater compliment than that? I am sure Steve is very very flattered by all of this.
All I can think of here, Dean is a bird in cage, singing his butt off! It doesn't get any better than this, amazing, singing AND playing,[ Perry has to be proud,]
Now keep this in mind, He sing this song just as well at Steve, and he is playing the drums at the same time. There are 2 great singers out there that can drum and sing at the same time. Deen and Phil Collins. Singing and playing the drums are always at a different tempo, plus your breathing can't be off a bit or the songs suffers.
At no time is this songs does he miss a beat. Great job.
Deen is the best Journey singer to get close to Steve, if you shut your eyes and pretend its Steve singing it's very very good, cant beat Steve though end off
he is great because guess who his favorite singer is???...Steve Perry ..Deen Castronovo is amazing and its because he studies the best of all time in Stteve Perry..
and i agree even though deen turned the lead down he is better than arnel
Try being a drummer and a singer at the same time, without becoming winded. Keeping the beat of the song and the tempo of the vocals. There are 2 great drummers that can do that,. Deen and Phil Collins. Typically the vocals are normally slower than the beat. Hell of a job!!
He is the only thing better than perry, arnel is great but he has his own voice that fits the signature journey sound. They should of done what genesis did.
Deen Castronovo eres un grandioso baterista con una voz privilegiada ,me encantaria que fueses el vocalista de Journey ...pero si no se puede con tenerte en Journey ya es un regalo !!!!!
Find a new drummer and put him out front as the lead singer. I have watch Journey since 1980 or so, and outside of Perry, Castronovo is the best singer in the band.He is a great drummer too. Great Job!!!!!!
Deen's voice is nothing short of amazing. And then there's the drumming..... holy moly what a talent God has given him! Yes, please!

Phil Collins same thing!

How can you compare this stunning performance to In the Air Tonight?!
MrIaino 2 years ago
i was with him one eve last week----he's back in town.

I am sure Steve is very very flattered by all of this.

it's fricken mean how he can sing so strong like that and play the drums at the same time. awesome
MrPonolicious 2 years ago
All I can think of here, Dean is a bird in cage, singing his butt off! It doesn't get any better than this, amazing, singing AND playing,[ Perry has to be proud,]
What an awesome talent is Dean!

Great job.

@sharpman12 you got it bro.....the tempo with the intonation is freakin sick. his falsetto is sweet

dont forget to mention don henley!
Mozzer75 2 years ago
yes! but henley hasn't got any chance against deen in drumming...
compared to deen und to his own talent to write songs and to sing, henley is a bad drummer

Deen is the best Journey singer to get close to Steve, if you shut your eyes and pretend its Steve singing it's very very good, cant beat Steve though end off
DeanoPiano 2 years ago
he is great because guess who his favorite singer is???...Steve Perry ..Deen Castronovo is amazing and its because he studies the best of all time in Stteve Perry..
and i agree even though deen turned the lead down he is better than arnel
mcristhebest1 2 years ago 2
Try being a drummer and a singer at the same time, without becoming winded. Keeping the beat of the song and the tempo of the vocals. There are 2 great drummers that can do that,. Deen and Phil Collins. Typically the vocals are normally slower than the beat. Hell of a job!!
sharpman12 2 years ago
Ladies and Gentleman ... this is guy is truley gifted! GREAT voice and a monster on the sticks!! Should be lead man!
dogears1 2 years ago 3
This guy needs to start his own solo career. It is a waste for him to limit himself to being the drummer. Beautiful voice.

He is good He should have taken Steve's place.. What a voice..

I simply cannot believe this guy can sing that well while drumming, he's phenomenal!

He is the only thing better than perry, arnel is great but he has his own voice that fits the signature journey sound. They should of done what genesis did.

Find a new drummer and put him out front as the lead singer. I have watch Journey since 1980 or so, and outside of Perry, Castronovo is the best singer in the band.He is a great drummer too. Great Job!!!!!!
