I can't tell you how many times I've heard samples from other people that are twisted and turned for other works such as advertisements. My rock station morning show will play Comedian songs from time to time. They do pay to the big companies but it's like a 1% from the annual earnings. Normally if the original artist doesn't know, they'll play it.
